The effects and predictors of duration in youth mentor relationships were examined. The study included 1,138 young, urban adolescents (Mean age 12.25), all of whom applied to Big Brothers Big Sisters programs. The adolescents were randomly assigned to either the treatment or control group, and administered questions at baseline and 18 months later Adolescents in relationships that lasted a year or longer reported the largest number of improvements, with progressively fewer effects emerging among youth who were in relationships that terminated earlier. Adolescents who were in relationships that

PURPOSE: The intent of this mini review is to pay homage to Dr. John E. Moulder's long and successful career in radiation science with the Medical College of Wisconsin. This effort will be done from the perspective of his history of U.S. Government funding for research into the biological pathways involved in radiation-induced normal tissue injuries, especially damage to the kidneys and heart, and pharmacological interventions. In addition, the impact of his steady guidance and leadership in the mentoring of junior scientists, and the development of meaningful collaborations with other researc

Youth in foster care face significant life challenges that make it more likely that they will face negative outcomes (i.e., school failure, homelessness, and incarceration). While the reason(s) for out-of-home placement (i.e., family violence, abuse, neglect and/or abandonment) provide some context for negative outcomes, such negative outcomes need not be a foregone conclusion. In fact, interventions created to serve at-risk youth could ostensibly address the needs of youth in foster care as well, given that they often face similar social, emotional, and other challenges. Specifically, the aut

Effective mentorship is essential for strengthening the STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) workforce, yet empirical evidence on how mentorship networks are structured and linked to career success remains limited. Here, we analyze mentorship networks among recipients of NIH career development (K) awards to characterize network size, mentor roles, and their associations with mentee-reported outcomes, including potential variation by sociodemographic characteristics. We found that K-awardees rely on mentors beyond their primary advisor, who play varying roles beyo

PURPOSE: To report the benefits of a newly defined tele-mentoring surgical model in vitreoretinal surgery based on a mixed reality headset (MRH) to enhance ophthalmic surgical education. METHODS: A two-step approach was used to define and test the efficacy of the tele-mentoring model designed for surgical teaching. First, the application of the innovative MRH in intraocular surgery was validated for safety and efficacy by an expert surgeon. Secondly, a board of vitreoretinal surgeons designed the tele-mentoring model for surgical teaching, entailing a pre-operative training and the execution o

Aims Overseas qualified dentists (OQDs) make up a significant portion of the UK dental workforce, yet there is limited research on their experiences, particularly regarding their mentorship needs. This study explores OQDs' perceptions of mentorship, its value, and effectiveness, with the aim of informing evidence-based recommendations to better support this group. Methods A qualitative research approach was adopted, involving ten in-depth semi-structured interviews with OQDs who had registered in the UK within the last 15 years. The interviews, totalling approximately eight recorded hours, were

PROBLEM: Ethnic and racial diversity is increasing among medical students, with groups that were historically underrepresented in medicine (URiM) now estimated to constitute 21.5% of medical students. However, there is a drop-off in the percentage of URiM students pursuing residencies in surgical specialties. In 2019, only 5.8% of ophthalmology residents surveyed identified themselves as URiM. This has public health implications in that visual impairment and blindness disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minoritized populations in the United States, and URiM physicians practicing in the

PURPOSE: Eating disorders (ED) are chronic and challenging-to-treat conditions, often persisting over extended periods. Some patients with EDs require prolonged intensive rehabilitation services, which may include weekly home visits by paraprofessional mentors serving as support persons, providing guidelines, emotional care, and assistance. This study aims to enhance our understanding of the nature of the relationship formed between mentors and patients with EDs.
DESIGN & METHODS: Fifteen in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with patients and paraprofessional mentors. Interviews wer

BACKGROUND: During the transition between prison and community, people are at greatly increased risk for adverse health outcomes. This study describes a peer health mentoring program that supports women in the first 3 days after their release from a provincial correctional facility in British Columbia.
METHODS: We used a participatory health research framework to develop multimethod processes to describe the Unlocking the Gates Peer Health Mentoring Program. Mentors are women with incarceration experience. Between 2013 and 2018, women released from Alouette Correctional Centre for Women were

Learning to use a speech generating device (SGD), also known as a voice output communication aid (VOCA), is a challenging experience for new device learners. These learners typically rely on training from speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and may not meet other users who are competent SGD communicators. The aim of this study was to explore SLPs' perceptions of the important components of a program where adults who use an SGD mentor new learners. A total of 17 SLPs experienced in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) participated in one of three focus groups. The focus group discus

BACKGROUND: Mentorship is crucial to physicians' professional development, with well-documented benefits. However, residents from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (URiM) often face barriers to accessing high-quality mentorship. Despite this gap, few structured programs exist that deliberately tackle these barriers, leaving an important opportunity to enhance support for URiM trainees.
AIM: To design and implement a multidimensional URiM mentorship program.
SETTING: Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) Internal Medicine Residency.
PARTICIPANTS: URiM residents.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The

This case example demonstrates the impact of targeted and sustained investment in research infrastructure and mentoring on a research ecosystem. The Delaware IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (DE-INBRE) is a statewide partnership funded the National Institutes of Health IDeA program and the State of Delaware which seeks to broaden the geographic distribution of biomedical research activity across the USA to better prepare students for biomedical research careers. DE-INBRE aligns with existing research on mentoring's role in professional development, faculty success, and workforce

INTRODUCTION: As of 2019, women comprise 52.4% of medical school matriculants, make up more than one-third of the active physician workforce, and nearly half of residents and fellows. Although the number of women physicians continues to increase, many surgical subspecialities, including orthopaedic surgery, have not seen a substantial increase in the percentage of women physicians. This may be due to a lack of mentorship. Efforts within the medical community to decrease the burden of gender bias on women include attempts to increase access to mentorship opportunities. Effective mentoring is a

For individuals aspiring to a career in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, mentorship can shape destiny. Mentorship helps assure safe passage into the specialty, and it influences the arc of professional development across the career continuum. Even before the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, technology and social networking were transforming mentorship in otolaryngology. Now, in an increasingly virtual world, where in-person interactions are the exception, mentorship plays an even more pivotal role. Mentors serve as trusted guides, helping learners navigate accelerating

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to adapt the Mentor Mindset Scale into Turkish and examine its psychometric properties. The scale assesses mentors' orientations toward youth as Enforcer and Protector, conceptualizing Mentor Mindset as a pattern defined by these two dimensions.
METHODS: The sample comprised 316 adults (210 women, 106 men). To further examine construct distinctiveness, the Implicit Theories of Intelligence Scale was employed to test concurrent validity across fixed and growth mindset dimensions.
RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis supported the proposed two-factor structure,
