Breast neoplasms containing bone and cartilage.

A total of 307 breast neoplasms and tumour-like conditions were reviewed to assess the frequency with which bone and/or cartilage occurred. Of 90 fibroadenomas, 1 (1.1%) and 2 of 158 breast carcinomas (1.3%) contained bone, one benign mesenchymoma contained cartilage, and one benign "mixed" tumour (pleomorphic adenoma) displayed cartilage and bone. Twenty-two papillomas and 34 cases of gynaecomastia did not contain any cartilage or bone. This study confirms the impression that the occurrence of bone or cartilage in human breast neoplasms is rare. These lesions are briefly discussed with refere

Carcinosarcoma arising in a uterine leiomyoma: report of a unique neoplasm.

Malignant transformation of a uterine leiomyoma is an exceedingly rare phenomenon. Previous reported examples of malignant neoplasms to arise so include leiomyosarcoma, angiosarcoma, and malignant mesenchymoma. We report an intramural carcinosarcoma arising in a uterine leiomyoma in a 38-year-old woman. This case is unique in being the first recorded carcinosarcoma arising within a uterine leiomyoma and the first example of an epithelial neoplasm to do so. We discuss the differential diagnosis and possible pathogenesis of the tumor that has likely arisen secondary to epitheliogenesis in a mese

Childhood pulmonary blastoma: a pleuropulmonary variant of the adult-type pulmonary blastoma.

Two fatal childhood cases of the rare pulmonary blastoma are reported. One was associated with a congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation. Both neoplasms extended to involve visceral pleura and were entirely composed of blastemal and mesenchymal elements without recognizable neoplastic epithelial components. The mesenchymal component in both instances consisted of malignant rhabdomyoblasts, undifferentiated mesenchyme, and differentiated, apparently benign, cartilage. Review of the literature suggests that these features may be specific for the childhood forms of pulmonary blastoma. It is fu

Aneurysmal bone cyst secondary to infantile cartilaginous hamartoma of rib.

We report the first case, in a 4-month-old girl, of an aneurysmal bone cyst secondary to infantile cartilaginous hamartoma of the rib. Infantile cartilaginous hamartoma of the rib (benign mesenchymoma) is a large, expansile tumour that is characterised by cartilaginous, vascular and primitive-appearing stromal and mesenchymal elements. Most cases are diagnosed at less than 1 year of age and may even be congenital. Aneurysmal bone cyst may be a secondary lesion to pre-existing tumours such as giant cell tumours, osteoblastomas, angiomas and chondroblastomas. This unique case is presented with r

Gingival leiomyomatous hamartoma of the maxilla: a rare entity.

Hamartoma is a tumour-like malformation appearing as a focal overgrowth of normal cells. Leiomyomatous hamartomas (LHs) are rare in the oral cavity and commonly seen in the Japanese and less than 40 cases have been reported in the Japanese and English literature. The clinical differential diagnoses are irritational (traumatic) fibroma and congenital epulis. It has to be differentiated histopathologically from its neoplastic counterparts and mesenchymomas. Hence, we report such a case of LHs, which presented as a sessile gingival growth occurring in the midline in a 15-year-old girl. The final

Mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall: a cooperative study with review of the literature.

The clinicopathologic features of three examples of mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall are described. The entity has been recorded under a number of names including osteochondroma, osteochondrosarcoma, benign chondroblastoma, mesenchymoma, and chondromatous hamartoma. The condition is manifest at birth or shortly thereafter with deformity of the chest wall and respiratory distress. Radiographic examination reveals a well-defined, partly calcified mass involving one or more ribs. The tumor is composed predominantly of chondroid tissue with large endothelium-lined blood spaces and immature

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the retroperitoneum with osteosarcomatous component: report of two cases.

We describe two cases of ossified soft tissue tumors of the retroperitoneum. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging both revealed retroperitoneal masses consisting of two components -- densely ossified and lipid-rich components. In one case, a 50-year-old man, a histological diagnosis of dedifferentiated liposarcoma with osteosarcoma was made based on the needle biopsy of the two components. In another case, a 54-year-old man, surgical resection of the complex perirenal mass was performed and the same diagnosis was made. Although an ossified component represent high-grade lesion,

Extensive linear epidermal nevus associated with hemangiomas of bones and vitamin-D-resistant rickets.

The association of connate, left-sided, extensive epidermal verrucous nevus, multiple isolated bone tumors and vitamin-D-resistant rickets since childhood seen in a 20-year-old male patient corresponded to an epidermal nevus syndrome (ENS). However, other organ involvement occasionally associated with ENS could not be found in this patient, and his intraosseous tumors represented histologically benign hemangiomas. Serum analysis revealed hypophosphatemia (together with phosphaturia), decreased levels of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol and elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase indicating hypoph

Pancreatic metastasis of leiomyosarcoma in the right thigh: a case report.

Pancreatic tumors are primary in most of the cases. Pancreatic metastases associated with other primary malignancies, especially pancreatic metastasis of leiomyosarcoma, are uncommon. A 66-year-old woman underwent surgical resection of malignant mesenchymoma (70% osteosarcoma and 30% leiomyosarcoma) in the right thigh. In the postoperative period, a pancreatic mass was identified radiologically by abdominal computed tomography. Pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. The surgical specimen revealed leiomyosarcoma metastasized to the pancreas. A metastatic nodule on the remnant

[Computerized tomography diagnosis of cavernous thymus hemangioma and differentiation from other mediastinal hemangiomas].

A case of cavernous haemangioma of the thymus is reported, including the findings of conventional X-ray imaging, computed tomography, surgery and histology. In addition, the literature of thymic angiomatous mesenchymomas as well as of mediastinal haemangiomas is reviewed. The tumour of a 29-year old and asymptomatic woman was located in the anterior mediastinal compartment at the site of the left thymic lobe. The tumour contained phleboliths and was surrounded by a small capsule of fat. After bolus infusion of contrast agent a delay of enhancement could be detected by CT, which led to the diag

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma of penis: a case report.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (EOS) is rare and commonly arises in the retroperitoneum, limbs, head and neck. There is no significant difference between EOS and other malignant tumors in soft tissue. Localized pain and swelling are the common presenting symptoms. Clinical diagnosis of EOS is difficult, imaging techniques may be helpful and careful, and the histopathological analysis is necessary. The common histological variants of EOS include: osteoblastoma, chondroblastoma, and fibroblastoma, and other unusual subtypes were reported occasionally. It should be distinguished with myositis ossific

[Mesenchymatous tumor of the spermatic cord with late recurrence in the retroperitoneal space. Apropos of a case].

The reported case is characterized by the original tumor site as well as by the recurrence site; by the slowly evolutive nature of the lesion over nine years from the time of surgical tumor excision to relapse; and by histological variations raising a nosological problem. Our clinical, anatomopathological and therapeutical observations are based on the characteristics of the case as well as published data. We only traced 5 cases in the literature of spermatic cord tumors with retroperitoneal localization. The progressive histologic polymorphism of these tumors compels us to raise the question

Pleomorphic adenoma with extensive lipometaplasia: report of three cases.

We report a series of three cases of pleomorphic adenoma with extensive lipometaplasia, a recently described subtype of pleomorphic adenoma of salivary gland origin. Two patients were female and one male, ranging in age from 30 to 45 years. Two occurred in the minor salivary glands of the lip and palate, respectively, and one in the parotid. Typical histologic findings are presented. In addition, one case consists of a proliferation of spindle cells with an interesting combination of mature adipose tissue, hyaline cartilage, and bone in the absence of ductal structures. The differential diagno

An unusual bronchial obstruction in a fit young man.

We describe the case of a previously well young man who presented acutely to hospital with a history of progressive chest symptoms and systemic upset. At admission, clinical evidence of left upper lobe collapse on respiratory examination and chest x-ray gave rise to significant clinical concern. Initial assessment by CT suggested a possible aspirated foreign body in the left upper lobe bronchus with distal left upper lobe collapse. Subsequent rigid bronchoscopy identified a solid abnormality totally occluding the left upper lobe bronchus, which did not appear to be a foreign body. The patient

Morphological features and genetic background in ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (EMCMT) is a rare neoplasm that mainly affects the tongue and harbors recurrent, although not exclusive, gene fusions. Owing to its rarity, overlapping features with other tumors may lead to challenges in the microscopic diagnosis. We aimed to perform a systematic review focusing on the histomolecular findings of EMCMT of the oral and maxillofacial region and to evaluate the possible association between microscopic features with the genetic background. METHODS: An electronic search was made on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Ovid, and Embase. Cl

[Giant mesenchymal tumor of the vulva with atypical clinical evolution].

Mixed mesenchymal tumors of the vulva are rare lesions. On other hand, aggressive angiomyxoma is a recently characterized neoplasm occurring principally in the pelvic soft-tissues and showing propensity for local recurrence. The benign soft-tissue tumors are small than malign neoplasm, mimicking and often are misdiagnosed as cysts of Bartholin's gland. In this report we describe one case of a benign, giant and atypical mixed mesenchymal tumor of the vulva and its particular clinical characteristics.

USCAP Specialty Conference: case 1-type I pleuropulmonary blastoma.

Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) was defined in 1988 by Manivel et al. in a series describing 11 intrathoracic pulmonary neoplasms in young children. The PPB is a unique peripheral pulmonary or pleural-based tumor of childhood that is characterized in its earliest form as a bland-appearing multiloculated cyst with small foci of tumor cells and in later forms as mixed and predominantly primitive, overtly malignant neoplasms. Prior to the introduction of the PPB as a distinct entity, this tumor had been reported in the literature as pulmonary blastoma, sarcoma arising in mesenchymal cystic hamarto

Major hepatic resections for neoplasia in children.

In a consecutive series from 1968 to 1978, 11 hepatic resections encompassing at least two hepatic segments were carried out for neoplasia in pediatric patients varying in age from 7 days to 14 years. There were no operative deaths. These resections consisted of four right lobectomies, three extended right lobectomies, one right lobectomy with right nephrectomy and inferior vena caval resection, two left lobectomies, and one left extended lobectomy. Diagnoses were hepatoblastoma in six patients, Wilms' tumor invading the liver in two, hemangioendothelioma in two, and malignant mesenchymoma in

Computed tomography of the perineum.

The value of computed tomography (CT) in the assessment of pelvic malignancy is well established. However, the importance of scanning caudad to the symphysis pubis to include the perineum has not been emphasized. The CT anatomy of the perineum in the transverse, coronal, and sagittal planes planes in normal subjects and in cadaver specimens is reviewed, and experience in 22 patients with pelviperineal pathology is reported. Malignancies in 16 patients were of the cervix (seven), vulva (six), vagina (two), and a recurrent mesenchymoma (one). Six patients had abscesses; one of these had cellulit
