INTRODUCTION: Simple bone cyst or unicameral bone cyst (UBC) are benign cystic lesions commonly found in femur and humerus. However hand is a very rare site of occurrence. Treatment described for UBC of hand commonly involves curettage and bone grafting.
CASE REPORT: A 7 year old right hand dominant girl presented to us with chief complaints of pain and swelling in right 4th metacarpal since 2 month. On imaging, plain radiographs of right hand showed expansile lytic lesion on Metaphyseal-diaphyseal region of 4th metacarpal with pathological fracture. MRI showed cystic lesions with internal lo

The treatment and results of a retrospective study are presented on 23 patients who underwent surgical treatment for a fracture of the base of the thumb metacarpal. The 12 patients with a Bennett fracture were not found to be suffering from limitations in their daily activities, work, sport or hobbies. In the majority of cases an anatomical or almost anatomical position was achieved and maintained using closed reduction and extra-articular Kirschner wire fixation. Two of the seven patients with a Rolando fracture were found to have complaints which gave rise to limitations in the above-mention

A 4-year-old Standardbred stallion sustained a severely comminuted fracture involving the second, third, and fourth metacarpal bones. The fracture was repaired using two 14-hole broad dynamic compression plates positioned at 90 degrees to one another, allowing one plate to protect the other in the bending mode. An autologous cancellous bone graft obtained from the tuber coxae was added at the site of the defect in the mid- to upper third of the third metacarpal bone. Complications associated with the fixation included a Staphylococcus aureus infection 5 months after surgery, laminitis that dev

Results of grip reconstruction in two patients after severe crush-avulsion injuries of the hand were presented. Total destruction affected the first or the first and the second ray of the hand which was accompanied by soft tissue loss, finger amputations and complex bone fractures with vessels and nerves damage. Soft tissue reconstructions were performed using various methods. Pedicled groin flap followed by nerves reconstruction and tenolysis were done in one patient. In the second case soft tissues were rebuilt with distally pedicled adipo-cutaneous forearm flap supplied by distal radial art

Arthrodesis is a reliable surgical procedure for treating thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis. However, the most frequent and problematic complication of arthrodesis is nonunion. Although postarthrodesis-related nonunion is a common complication, the indications and results of revision procedures for this pathological condition have not been well documented. A 59-year-old man underwent arthrodesis for thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis, which resulted in painful nonunion 7 months after the surgery. We performed revision surgery for this pathological condition, using first dorsal metacarpal

The objective of this retrospective study was to report the clinical use, advantages, disadvantages, complications and outcome of an epoxy putty external skeletal fixator (EPESF) used for the repair of fractures of all four main metatarsal or metacarpal bones in a single limb in 11 dogs and 11 cats. The aim of this technique was to achieve satisfactory alignment of the proximal and distal joints and the digits, rather than anatomical reconstruction of the metacarpal/metatarsal bones themselves. All of the cases achieved fracture union and they all recovered fully without any residual lameness.

We report a rare case of complete proximal epiphyses (so-called pseudoepiphyses) of metacarpal and metatarsal bones in a human. These phenomena were seen in both the hands and feet of a seven-year-old girl undergoing medical examination for pain in the right foot. During medical treatment, X-ray photographs of the hands and feet were taken. Each metacarpal and metatarsal bone except for the first metacarpal bones had supernumerary epiphyses (complete pseudoepiphyses) at the nonepiphyseal end of these bones. This is a rare case even for an experienced orthopaedic surgeon.

Fatigue-related subchondral bone injuries of the third metacarpal/metatarsal (McIII/MtIII) bones are common causes of wastage, and they are welfare concerns in racehorses. A better understanding of bone health and strength would improve animal welfare and be of benefit for the racing industry. The porosity index (PI) is an indirect measure of osseous pore size and number in bones, and it is therefore an interesting indicator of bone strength. MRI of compact bone using traditional methods, even with short echo times, fail to generate enough signal to assess bone architecture as water protons ar

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships between physical activity and metacarpal cortical bone mineral density (BMD) and bone resorption in hemiplegic patients. Seventy-two male hemiplegic patients with cerebrovascular disease (mean age, 67.0 years; range 48-83 years) were recruited. Metacarpal cortical BMD in bilateral hands was measured by computed X-ray densitometry, and the levels of urinary cross-linked N-telopeptides of type I collagen (NTx), as a bone resorption marker, were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). BMD (mean +/- SD) in the para

A comparative analysis of 26 petrous bones and epiphyses of metacarpals from the Second World War era revealed no significant differences in DNA yield or success in STR typing. This unexpected parity in DNA preservation between the petrous bone, a renowned source of endogenous DNA in skeletal remains, and the epiphyses of metacarpals, which are porous and susceptible to taphonomic changes, is surprising. In this study, we introduced ATR-FTIR spectroscopy as an approach to unravel the correlation between bone molecular structure and DNA preservation. Metacarpals and petrous bones with same taph

OBJECTIVE: To compare heat generation during insertion, pullout strength, and associated microdamage between a self-tapping positive profile transfixation pin (STTP) and nontapping positive profile transfixation pin (NTTP).
SAMPLE POPULATION: 30 pairs of third metacarpal bones (MC3s) from adult equine cadavers.
PROCEDURES: One MC3 of each pair was assigned to the STTP group; the other was assigned to the NTTP group. The assigned pin was inserted into the diaphysis in a lateral to medial direction. Bone temperature increase during pilot-hole drilling and pin insertion was recorded at 1 mm fro

Metacarpal nonunion is a rare outcome of metacarpal injury, and little has been published about its management. Care typically includes open reduction and internal fixation with a possible bone graft, similar to the treatment of other nonunions. However, there is no literature guidance if traditional methods do not lead to union. To improve the treatment of these recalcitrant metacarpal diaphyseal nonunions, we proposed a new surgical technique using a "top hat" bone graft harvested from the iliac crest. The graft is carefully shaped to create a cancellous "crown," which is inserted into the n

INTRODUCTION: Amputation of the thumb presents a serious insult to the hand and diminished quality of life for a patient physically, vocationally, and possibly psychologically. The aim of this study was to define the geometry of the thumb metacarpal in order to help create a standardized set of transcutaneous osseointegrated prostheses to treat patients who have suffered amputation of the thumb at the level of the metacarpophalangeal joint.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 metacarpals from 46 cadavers were studied. All soft tissues were removed and the thumb metacarpals were imaged using

In racehorses, fatigue related subchondral bone injury leads to overt fracture or articular surface collapse and subsequent articular cartilage degeneration. We hypothesised that the fatigue behaviour of equine subchondral bone in compression follows a power law function similar to that observed in cortical and trabecular bone. We determined the fatigue life of equine metacarpal subchondral bone in-vitro and investigated the factors influencing initial bone stiffness. Subchondral bone specimens were loaded cyclically in compression [54MPa (n=6), 66MPa (n=6), 78MPa (n=5), and 90MPa (n=6)] until

A 14-year-old boy presented with a deformity of his left hand since birth. His parents were nonconsanguineous and his early history was uneventful. The mother was not exposed to any teratogenic drugs during pregnancy. His other siblings are normal. The parents noticed the hand deformity at birth but he had not come to medical attention until he complained of restricted movement of the left hand at the wrist. On examination he did not have any pain on movement of the wrist nor tenderness over the wrist joint. Palmar flexion was restricted completely and active dorsiflexion was restricted in the

Several studies have examined bone mineral density (BMD) and related factors in children with cerebral palsy, but there are no such studies of adults with cerebral palsy. We evaluated BMD in 123 institutionalized adults (51 men aged 21-41 years and 72 premenopausal women aged 24-46 years) with cerebral palsy, and examined the associations of BMD with mobility level, use of anticonvulsant drugs, and abnormal calcium metabolism status. Hand radiographs were used to measure BMD of the second metacarpal bone (mBMD). Body weight (kg), height (m), and body mass index (BMI) were recorded. Serum calci

A new vascularized bone graft from the base of the second metacarpal was used to treat scaphoid non-union and Kienböck's disease. In two patients with scaphoid non-union, the procedure promoted healing, even when the proximal segment was poorly vascularized. In one patient with Kienböck's disease, the graft held stable and wrist pain was markedly reduced. Further clinical experience may establish this procedure as an option for carpal bone fractures or disease.
