Pupil dilation as a physiological marker of metacognitive processes.

Metacognition plays a crucial role in learning and decision-making across the life span. However, the neurophysiological substrates of metacognitive processes remain poorly understood. Recent evidence suggests that activity in the locus coeruleus-noradrenaline system may subserve post-response monitoring processes. In the present study we investigated whether pupil dilation, as an indirect and non-exclusive measure of noradrenergic activation, allows for characterizing metacognitive monitoring across different tasks and cognitive domains. Sixty young adults performed multiple experimental task

Navigating the Unknown: The Sociocultural and Metacognitive Architecture of Wisdom.

Psychological wisdom research has shifted from characterizing rare exemplars and desired outcomes to specifying processes that support sound judgment under uncertainty. Yet it has advanced along two siloed research tracks: one on folk theories-cultural tools such as exemplars, narratives, heuristics (including proverbs and maxims), and standards of judgment-and the other on the mechanisms involved in wise judgment. This review bridges these research tracks using a situated metacognitive lens: Folk theories provide candidate attributes or strategies for action, whereas perspectival metacognitio

An Evaluation of Metacognitive Functions in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: In metacognitive theory, thought fusion beliefs, beliefs about rituals, and beliefs about stop signals predict obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The number of controlled studies using specific scales to assess these three belief domains in different cultures is limited. METHODS: The comparison sample consisted of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (n: 106) and control (n: 200) group. Participants filled out the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised form, Penn State Worry Scale, Obsessive Beliefs Scale-44, Thought Fusion Inventory, Beliefs about Rituals Inventory and Stop

Confidence as a metacognitive contributor to and consequence of misinformation experiences.

Exposures to inaccurate information can lead people to become confused about what is true, to doubt their understandings, and to rely on the ideas later. Recent work has begun to investigate the role of metacognition in these effects. We review research foregrounding confidence as an exemplar metacognitive contributor to misinformation experiences. Miscalibrations between confidence about what one knows, and the actual knowledge one possesses, can help explain why people might hold fast to misinformed beliefs even in the face of counterevidence. Miscalibrations can also emerge after brief expo

The Scope of Metacognitive Therapy in the Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders.

Metacognitive therapy (MCT) is a novel and promising transdiagnostic psychotherapy intervention based on the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model of conceptualizing emotional disorders. It was developed by Adrian Wells in 2009. Its therapeutic response occurs by reducing dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs regarding worry and rumination, often seen in patients with psychiatric disorders. Since its inception, it has been increasingly applied to a wide spectrum of psychiatric illnesses, but mainly focusing on mood and anxiety disorders. To our knowledge, no study has detailed its existing th

Course and stability of cognitive and metacognitive beliefs in depression.

Maladaptive cognitive beliefs as measured by the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS) increase vulnerability to depression. Maladaptive metacognitive beliefs as measured by the Metacognitive Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) are also thought to contribute to depression. However, the long-term stability of metacognitive beliefs in depression has not yet been investigated. It is unclear whether metacognitive beliefs can add explanatory power to depression above and beyond maladaptive cognitive beliefs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role and stability of cognitive and metacognitive m

Metacognitive Precursors: An Analysis in Children with Different Disabilities.

The analysis of Metacognitive skills is a key element to guide the learning process. Current research has shown the initiation of these skills from an early age. The present study had two aims: (1) to validate a Scale Measuring Precursor Metacognitive Skills (SMPMS) in children with diverse disabilities, and (2) to study possible significant different between different disabilities in precursor metacognitive skill use. We worked with 87 children with different disabilities, with an average age range of 24-37 months. The results have shown high indicators of reliability and validity of the SMPM

The roles of interoceptive sensitivity and metacognitive interoception in panic.

BACKGROUND: Interoception refers to the ability to sense body signals. Two interoceptive dimensions have been recently proposed: (a) interoceptive sensitivity (IS) -objective accuracy in detecting internal bodily sensations (e.g., heartbeat, breathing)-; and (b) metacognitive interoception (MI) -explicit beliefs and worries about one's own interoceptive sensitivity and internal sensations. Current models of panic assume a possible influence of interoception on the development of panic attacks. Hypervigilance to body symptoms is one of the most characteristic manifestations of panic disorders.

The transdiagnostic nature of metacognitions in women with eating disorders.

There is emerging evidence for the important role of metacognitions in the presentation of eating disorders (EDs); however it is unclear to what extent these metacogntions are transdiagnostic. This study used a mixed methods convergent design to explore this question by triangulating both qualitative and quantitative data from 27 women, aged 18-55 years, with diagnoses of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorders not otherwise specified. The results indicated that metacognitions in EDs may be transdiagnostic and may in part explain temporal migration between diagnoses and the degr

Parental overprotection and metacognitions as predictors of worry and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Parental overprotection may have a direct effect on worry through hindering children's exploration experiences and preventing the learning of action-oriented coping strategies (Cheron, Ehrenreich and Pincus, 2009; Nolen-Hoeksema, Wolfson, Mumme and Guskin, 1995) and an indirect effect through fostering the development of maladaptive metacognitions that are associated with the activation of worry and the escalation of anxiety (Wells, 2000). AIM: The aim was to investigate the relative contribution of recalled parental overprotection in childhood and metacognitions in predicting cur

Know thyself: metacognitive networks and measures of consciousness.

Subjective measures of awareness rest on the assumption that conscious knowledge is knowledge that participants know they possess. Post-Decision Wagering (PDW), recently proposed as a new measure of awareness, requires participants to place a high or a low wager on their decisions. Whereas advantageous wagering indicates awareness of the knowledge on which the decisions are based, cases in which participants fail to optimize their wagers suggest performance without awareness. Here, we hypothesize that wagering and other subjective measures of awareness reflect metacognitive capacities subtende

Growth Is Rarely a Straight Line: Developmental Path of Early Metacognition, Role of Parental Metacognitive Talk and Influence on Children's Memory.

Rudimentary metacognitive skills emerge early in infancy. To date, however, little is known about the developmental course of these early skills or the factors involved in their development. To address this gap, the present study aimed to: (a) map the developmental trajectory of metacognitive uncertainty from 18 to 36 months; (b) examine whether parental metacognitive talk during play predicts this development; and (c) test the relations between these two factors and children's later memory performance. Using a longitudinal design, 60 parent-child dyads were tested every 6 months using an eye-

Evaluating the Specific Role of Dysfunctional Metacognitive Beliefs and Testing a Metacognitive Model of Emotional Distress in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Elevated emotional distress is common in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), and alleviating psychological problems is important as they may interfere with adherence to T1DM treatment regiments and poor glycaemic regulation. One way to understand and treat emotional distress is to formulate them as linked to self-regulatory strategies and their underlying metacognitive beliefs as proposed by the Self-regulatory Executive Functioning (S-REF) model. We aimed to evaluate the role of dysfunctional metacognitions in diabetes-related emotional distress beyond general emotional distress an

Metacognitive ability is associated with reduced emotion suppression.

Emotion regulation and metacognition are two key self-regulatory capacities that contribute significantly to psychological functioning. Emotion regulation involves the strategies individuals use to influence their emotional experiences, whereas metacognition refers to the capacity to reflect on and monitor one's own mental processes. Both constructs have been the focus of extensive research and are associated with important cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Although theoretical models propose that self-monitoring is a fundamental component of emotion regulation, the empirical link between emo

Metacognitive training facilitates optimal cognitive offloading.

Cognitive offloading refers to the use of physical actions and the external environment to reduce cognitive demand. Offloading strategies such as creating external reminders instead of relying on internal memory are highly effective and play a key role in supporting real-world cognition. Previous work has shown that people have systematic biases in their offloading strategies, which are related to biased metacognitive evaluations of cognitive ability. While metacognitive interventions could potentially mitigate these biases, research investigating their effects has produced mixed results. Here

Action modulates visual detection and metacognitive sensitivity.

Visual false pattern perception can increase in response to a lack of control. However, prior studies have manipulated control over relatively long timescales by altering participants' beliefs. We investigated whether short-timescale sensorimotor discrepancies, which are known to disrupt sense of agency, also lead to an increase in false perceptions. Participants were instructed either to voluntarily press a key, which triggered immediate or delayed visual feedback (i.e., white noise images with or without an embedded object), or to passively observe the feedback. We also explored metacognitio

Metacognitive model of suicidality: a study of Iranian inpatients.

BACKGROUND: The metacognitive model of suicidality proposes that positive metacognitions about suicide activate suicide-specific rumination, which in turn leads to the activation of negative metacognitions about suicide and an escalating aggravation of suicidal ideation/behavior. Initial studies support the model assumptions. However, investigations in highly burdened inpatient samples as well as studies in non-Western samples are missing by now. METHODS: A total of 209 Iranian psychiatric inpatients (56.9% female; age M = 31.14, SD = 11.04) took part in a cross-sectional assessment. Self-rep

Spontaneous metacognitive experiences and involuntary memories in the laboratory.

Spontaneous metacognitive experiences, such as déjà vu, are notoriously difficult to study under controlled laboratory conditions. Barzykowski and Moulin (2023) proposed that experimental procedures known to elicit involuntary autobiographical memories (IAMs) may also trigger a broader range of spontaneous cognitive phenomena, including déjà vu, tip-of-the-tongue states (TOTs), jamais vu, error detection, and zoning out. In this study, 96 participants completed a low-demand vigilance task commonly used to elicit IAMs. Participants were instructed to press the spacebar whenever they experienced

Examination of metacognitions and functionality in agoraphobia without comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Although agoraphobia is considered an independent diagnosis, the literature is limited in studies examining it alone. This study aims to investigate the relationship between agoraphobia, metacognitive beliefs, and functionality and to increase interest in studies on agoraphobia by contributing to areas that are missing in the literature. METHODS: Seventy healthy controls without any psychiatric disorder and seventy individuals with agoraphobia without comorbidities were included in the study.
