The associations of the concentrations of toxic metals (including metalloid) in blood and follicular fluid with the risk of diminished ovarian reserve.

BACKGROUND: Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR), a triggering factor for female infertility, affects 10% ∼ 35% of women of reproductive age. It is still unclear whether exposure to toxic metals (including metalloid) is associated with DOR risk, especially with respect to their relationships with the clinical phenotypes of DOR. METHODS: A case-control study including 439 patients was conducted, and Ba, Ni, As, Tl, Cd, Pb, Hg, Al and Cr levels in BL and FF were measured. Subsequent analyses were focused on Ba, Ni, As and Tl, which had the highest weights in the associations of the nine toxic metal

Associations between maternal exposure to multiple metals and metalloids and blood pressure in preschool children: A mixture-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to metals during pregnancy can potentially influence blood pressure (BP) in children, but few studies have examined the mixed effects of prenatal metal exposure on childhood BP. We aimed to assess the individual and combined effects of prenatal metal and metalloid exposure on BP in preschool children. METHODS: A total of 217 mother-child pairs were selected from the Zhuang Birth Cohort in Guangxi, China. The maternal plasma concentrations of 20 metals [e.g. lead (Pb), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and zinc (Zn)] in early pregnancy were measured by inductively coupled plasma

Co-exposure levels of volatile organic compounds and metals/metalloids in children: Implications for E-waste recycling activity prediction.

Identifying informal e-waste recycling activity is crucial for preventing health hazards caused by e-waste pollution. This study attempted to build a prediction model for e-waste recycling activity based on the differential exposure biomarkers of the populations between the e-waste recycling area (ER) and non-ER. This study recruited children in ER and non-ER and conducted a quasi-experiment among the adult investigators to screen differential exposure or effect biomarkers by measuring urinary 25 volatile organic compound (VOC) metabolites, 18 metals/metalloids, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine

Prenatal exposure to mixtures of metals and metalloids and risk of spontaneous preterm birth: Critical exposure windows and susceptibility factors.

Limited research has evaluated how prenatal exposure to mixtures of metals and metalloids influences the risk of spontaneous preterm birth (SPB), and the critical exposure windows and susceptibility factors remain unclear. In this nested case-control study, we measured serum concentrations of 41 metals/metalloids in 580 pregnant women from Shanxi Province, China-including 135 SPB cases and 445 term controls-to evaluate associations for individual metals/metalloids and for the overall mixture with SPB risk. Using multivariable logistic regression with elastic-net regularization, we identified f

Sources and toxicological effects of metal and metalloids on human health through fish consumption in mineral-rich city, Ranchi, India.

Ranchi is the administrative capital of Jharkhand and is located in the southern part of the Chhotanagpur Plateau. It is rich in forest and mineral resources and hence is suitable for the establishment of many large- and small-scale industries. The estimated population of Ranchi for the year 2023 is 3.54 million. These demographic characteristics make the capital more vulnerable to environmental degradation. Also, previous water quality research focused on river, water, and oceans separately; however, little or no work has been carried out on the comparison of metal or metalloid analysis in ri

Mobility of multiple heavy metalloids in contaminated soil under various redox conditions: Effects of iron sulfide presence and phosphate competition.

The mobility of heavy metalloids including As, Sb, Mo, W, and Cr in soil was investigated under both reducing and oxidizing conditions. The effects of soil mineralogy and the presence of competitive anions were studied as important factors affecting the mobility of these contaminants. Batch experiments conducted with the addition of oxidized and fresh FeS exhibited enhanced sorption rates for As and W under oxidizing conditions, and for Mo under reducing conditions. The inhibitory effect of phosphate on the sorption rates was most apparent for As and Mo under both oxidizing and reducing condit

Establishing baselines for metal and metalloid accumulation in black (Ursus americanus) and grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) in Montana.

Metal(loid) contamination remains a concern for wildlife inhabiting landscapes influenced by legacy and ongoing mining. Blood (n = 24) and hair (n = 27) samples were collected from black bears (Ursus americanus) and grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) in Montana's Cabinet-Yaak Ecosystem (CYE), with a preliminary comparison using hair from two grizzly bears in the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem (NCDE). Analyses focused on 10 target metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb, Rb, Se, U, and Zn), although U was below the detection limit in blood. Most concentrations were within published ref

LiGe(SiMe₃)₃: A New Substituent for the Synthesis of Metalloid Tin Clusters from Metastable Sn(I) Halide Solutions.

The most fruitful synthetic route to metalloid tin clusters applies the disproportionation reaction of metastable Sn(I) halide solutions, whereby Si(SiMe₃)₃ is mostly used as the stabilizing substituent. Here, we describe the synthesis and application of the slightly modified substituent Ge(SiMe₃)₃, which can be used for the synthesis of metalloid tin clusters to give the neutral cluster Sn10[Ge(SiMe₃)₃]₆ as well as the charged clusters {Sn10[Ge(SiMe₃)₃]₅}− and {Sn10[Ge(SiMe₃)₃]₄}2−. The obtained metalloid clusters are structurally similar to their Si(SiMe₃)₃ derivatives. However, differences

{Sn10 [Si(SiMe3 )3 ]4 }(2-) : A highly reactive metalloid tin cluster with an open ligand shell.

The reaction of a Sn(I) Cl solution with LiSi(SiMe3 )3 gave the anionic metalloid tin cluster {Sn10 [Si(SiMe3 )3 ]4 }(2-) (7) in good yield. The arrangement of the ten tin atoms in the cluster core can be described as a distorted centaur polyhedron. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that there are 26 bonding electrons in the cluster core, which may be described as an arachno cluster in agreement with Wade's rules. NMR and mass spectrometric investigations showed that 7 is highly reactive, which may be due to the open ligand shell. The easily available tin atoms in 7 thereby open the door t

[Si(SiMe3)3]3Ge9M(CO)3(-) (M=Cr, Mo, W): coordination chemistry with metalloid clusters.

Very recently it was shown that the metalloid cluster compound {Ge(9)[Si(SiMe(3))(3)](3)}(-)1 can be used for subsequent reactions as the shielding of the cluster core is rather incomplete. So the reaction of 1 with Cr(CO)(3)(CH(3)CN)(3) leads to a cluster enlargement where the chromium atom is incorporated into the cluster core. Here further applications of 1 as a flexible ligand in coordination chemistry are presented where the reaction of 1 with Mo(CO)(3)(EtCN)(3) and W(CO)(3)(CH(3)CN)(3) leads to [(CO)(3)MoGe(9)R(3)](-)4 and [(CO)(3)WGe(9)R(3)](-)5 respectively (R = Si(SiMe(3))(3)), showin

Role of intestinal microbiota in transformation of bismuth and other metals and metalloids into volatile methyl and hydride derivatives in humans and mice.

The present study shows that feces samples of 14 human volunteers and isolated gut segments of mice (small intestine, cecum, and large intestine) are able to transform metals and metalloids into volatile derivatives ex situ during anaerobic incubation at 37 degrees C and neutral pH. Human feces and the gut of mice exhibit highly productive mechanisms for the formation of the toxic volatile derivative trimethylbismuth [(CH(3))(3)Bi] at rather low concentrations of bismuth (0.2 to 1 mumol kg(-1) [dry weight]). An increase of bismuth up to 2 to 14 mmol kg(-1) (dry weight) upon a single (human vol

Stable isotopes and metals and metalloids in the smallest Megamouth Shark (Megachasma pelagios) reported to date from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Megamouth Shark is a circumtropically distributed filter-feeding species with only some records from the Atlantic Ocean available to date. In this study, a very young specimen, possibly a neonate, found floating off Pedra do Sal Beach, Piauí, Brazil, in 2018, was analyzed for stable isotopes and metals and metalloids. This research opens a window for investigating aspects of the biology of this scarcely studied shark at this developmental stage in the Western Equatorial Atlantic Ocean. Stable isotope values were δ13C = -18.66 ± 0.15‰ and δ15N = 5.93 ± 0.09‰, likely reflecting maternal isot

Association of Metals and Metalloids With Urinary Albumin/Creatinine Ratio: Evidence From a Cross-Sectional Study Among Elderly in Beijing.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposure to toxic elements contributes to the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Few studies focus on the association of urinary metals and metalloids concentrations with the urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR) among elderly, especially in areas and seasons with severe air pollution. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the associations of urinary metals and metalloids concentration with UACR, which is an early and sensitive indicator of CKD. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 275 elderly people in Beijing from November to December 2016, wh

Blood metal/metalloid concentration of male subjects undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment outcomes: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiology studies reported that heavy metal/metalloid exposure is associated with the impairment of semen quality. However, it is still not clear whether the in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment outcome will be affected after the heavy metal/metalloid exposure of the male partners. METHODS: A prospective cohort study with a 2-year followed-up was conducted in a tertiary IVF center. A total of 111 couples undergoing IVF/ICSI treatment were initially recruited from November 2015 to November 2016. Male blood concentrations of heav
