There are concerns about the induction of metal allergy with second-generation metal-on-metal prostheses, and the role that this may play in the development of complications such as 'pseudotumours' or failure of the implant. In this review, we attempt to set out the current knowledge on this subject. From a review of the literature, it is apparent that the first-generation metal-on-metal replacement hips did cause metal sensitization, and that joint failure was associated with this, although it is still not clear which one led to the other. Highly engineered second-generation metal-on-metal ar

Sliding ferroelectric (FE) metals have emerged as a distinct paradigm in which interlayer sliding enables switchable out-of-plane polarization in a metallic state, overcoming the conventional incompatibility between FE switching and metallicity. This Perspective traces the development of this field from its foundation in nonmagnetic systems, including 1T'-WTe2 and Td-MoTe2, in which switchable polarization coexists with metallic electronic states and enables Berry curvature memory and electrically controlled superconductivity. Recent extensions to systems hosting compensated magnetic orders ar

Environment-assisted fracture phenomena in metals are usually associated with surface energy reduction due to an adsorbed film. Here we demonstrate a unique embrittlement effect in Al that is instead mediated by surface stress, induced by an adsorbed organic monolayer. Atomistic simulations show that the adsorbate carbon-chain length lc controls the surface stress via van der Waals forces, being compressive for lc < 8 and tensile otherwise. For lc > 8, we demonstrate experimentally that the nanoscale film causes a ductile-to-brittle transition on the macroscale. Concomitant with this transitio

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is a noncicatricial alopecia affecting any hair-bearing area. Although AA is considered to be an autoimmune disease, oxidative stress has been shown to be an important factor in the etiology of AA. Trace elements are highly essential for humans since they form the building blocks of large molecules, function as the cofactors of enzymes, and have some key biological functions. The aim of this study was to investigate serum levels of heavy metals like iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), cobalt (Co), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in pa

Medical treatment in Wilson's disease includes chelators (D-penicillamine and trientine) or zinc salts that have to be maintain all the lifelong. This pharmacological treatment is categorised into two phases; the first being a de-coppering phase and the second a maintenance one. The best therapeutic approach remains controversial, as only a few non-controlled trials have compared these treatments. During the initial phase, progressive increase of chelators' doses adjusted to exchangeable copper and urinary copper might help to avoid neurological deterioration. Liver transplantation is indicate

Transition metals, such as iron, copper, zinc, and manganese play an important role in many bacterial biological processes that add to an overall evolutional fitness of bacteria. They are often involved in regulation of bacterial virulence as a mechanism of host invasion. However, the same transition metals are known to play an important role in host-defense mechanisms against bacteria through Fenton chemistry evoked toxicity as an example. Copper and zinc are used as a mechanism to poison bacteria whereas other metals, such as, iron and manganese are withheld by the predator to prevent recons

Several chemical elements are required by living organisms in addition to the four elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen usually present in common organic molecules. Many metals (e.g. sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum and selenium) are known to be required for normal biological functions in humans. Disorders of metal homeostasis and of metal bioavailability, or toxicity caused by metal excess, are responsible for a large number of human diseases. Metals are also extensively used in medicine as therapeutic and/or diagnostic agent

BACKGROUND: Correlation of several patient factors with contact sensitization to nickel, cobalt, chromate, and other metal allergens has not been reviewed in the Taiwanese population.
OBJECTIVES: A retrospective analysis was performed to define the characteristics of patients with positive patch tests to metals in a tertiary referral medical centre between 1978 and 2003.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patch test data of 3559 patients at a medical centre in Taiwan from 1978 to 2003 were retrospectively analysed. Contact sensitization to metals was defined as a positive reaction to at least one of the

Trace metals such as zinc, manganese, and iron are necessary for the growth and function of the brain. The transport of trace metals into the brain is strictly regulated by the brain barrier system, i.e., the blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers. Trace metals usually serve the function of metalloproteins in neurons and glial cells, while a portion of trace metals exists in the presynaptic vesicles and may be released with neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. Zinc and manganese influence the concentration of neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft, probably via the action ag

Well-documented evidence suggests that environmental and occupational exposure of toxic metals or metal-containing compounds can cause a number of human diseases, including inflammation and cancer, through DNA damage, protein modifications, or lipid peroxidation. This mini-review addresses the mechanisms of cell death induced by some carcinogenic metals, including arsenic (III), chromium (VI) and vanadium (V). A possible contribution of reactive oxygen species to metal-induced cell death is also discussed.

The identification and quantification of elements as such (that make up the historical analytical method used in toxicological studies) are necessary but not sufficient, in all cases, to understand and evaluate the mechanism of interaction between elements and biological targets. In fact, in order to approximate the factors that control the concentrations of elements in environmental or biological media, we need to know the occurrence of species of the elements themselves. This is element speciation, i.e. the capability of separating, identifying and determining the species in which an element

The mechanisms by which metals induce renal injury are, in general, poorly understood. Characteristic features of metal nephrotoxicity are lesions that tend to predominate in specific regions of the nephron within specific cell types. This suggests that certain regions of the nephron are selectively sensitive to specific metals. Regional variability in sensitivity could result from the localization of molecular targets in certain cell populations and/or the localization of transport and binding ligands that deliver metals to targets within the nephron. Significant progress has been made in ide

Several metals were evaluated in cell cultures for their ability to inhibit metabolic coupling, the intercellular transfer of low-molecular-weight metabolites by directly connecting gap junctions. To monitor inhibition of metabolic coupling, wild-type Chinese hamster V79 cells proficient in metabolism of 6-thioguanine (6-TG) were cocultured with mutant V79 cells unable to metabolize 6-TG to its toxic metabolite (6-TG-resistant cells). In the presence of 6-TG, inhibition of metabolic coupling by the metals was manifested as increased recovery of 6-TG-resistant cells compared to recovery in untr

This paper reviews studies on the adverse health effects of exposure to metals, using arsenic and cadmium as examples. The carcinogenic potential of arsenic has been studied in various settings. Inhalation is clearly related to the development of lung cancer in (copper) smelting and arsenical pesticide manufacturing, and also in heavily exposed wine merchants who had an additional source of exposure by ingestion. Animal studies have shown cadmium to be a lung carcinogen, while a study by Thun et al. provides the best evidence to date that cadmium inhaled as CdO particles may be a human lung ca

Studies of tubular injury and necrosis caused by heavy metals have indicated involvement by various parts of the proximal tubule. This paper describes the patterns of injury seen after administration of mercuric chloride, uranyl nitrate, and cisplatin to animal models. Studies describing a possible role of the mesangium of the renal corpuscle in proximal tubular injury are included.

Metastasis is currently the leading cause of cancer related death and is the most feared and difficult to treat outcome for cancer patients. This complex process is regulated by a plethora of signaling pathways and molecules that control cell proliferation, invasion, motility and adhesion. Many of these vital processes that enable metastasis to occur are influenced by metals, which play crucial roles in the function of numerous proteins and enzymes. Importantly, an excess of essential metals such as iron and copper is often associated with carcinogenesis and metastatic disease. As such, metals
