Rare earth elements in sands collected from Southern California sea beaches.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered the limiting resources for advancing clean technologies and electronics. Because global REEs reserve is limited, non-conventional and secondary sources are being investigated for recovery. Here, we investigated wet and dry sand from seven Southern California beaches for sixteen REEs. These include five light REEs, two medium REEs, and nine heavy REEs, separated by their atomic weight. The mass of the magnetically separated compounds ranged from 15.19 to 129.91 g per kg of dry sand in the studied sea beaches in Southern California. The total REEs concen

Macropa derivatives for radiopharmaceutical and rare-earth element separation.

Recognition of large f-block ions underlies advances in targeted radionuclide therapy and rare-earth element separations. Like the lanthanide-binding protein lanmodulin, the 18-membered macrocycle macropa displays reverse-size selectivity characterized by its preference for binding large metal ions. Its diaza-18-crown-6 scaffold enables efficient complexation of therapeutically relevant radiometals, such as 225Ac, 223Ra, and 213Bi, while accommodating diagnostic partners, including 203Pb and radiolanthanides. In parallel, systematic differences in stability constants across the lanthanide seri

Rare-Earth Single-Atom Catalysts: A New Frontier in Photo/Electrocatalysis.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) provide well-defined active sites with 100% atom utilization, and can be prepared using a wide range of support materials. Therefore, they are attracting global attention, especially in the fields of energy conversion and storage. To date, research has focused on transition-metal and precious-metal-based SACs. More recently, rare-earth (RE)-based SACs have emerged as a new frontier in photo/electrocatalysis owing to their unique electronic structure arising from the spin-orbit coupling of the 4f and valence orbitals, unsaturated coordination environment, and unique

Release, Cross-Media Transport, and Retained Inventory of Rare Earth Elements from Informal Electronic Waste Recycling.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential for modern electronics and are increasingly entering electronic waste (e-waste) streams. Informal recycling can release REEs into the environment, but their sources, transfer pathways, and retained inventories remain poorly quantified. Here, we combine microscopic particle characterization, neodymium (Nd) isotopes, Bayesian source apportionment, and a Level III steady-state multimedia aquivalence (SMA) model to characterize REE sources, cross-media transport, and retained inventories in Guiyu, China. Spatial clustering of REE concentrations near histori

On the consumption of REE-rich carbonate earthy substances by ungulates on the western shore of Lake Baikal.

Geological and hydrobiogeochemical studies were carried out in the valleys of the Sredniye Homuty and Hargino streams on the western shore of Lake Baikal in order to find the reason for the active consumption of carbonate and clay-sandy earths by wild ungulates there, which were found to be enriched with forms of rare earth elements (REE) that are easily extracted in a slightly acidic (HCl, pH-2) environment. The studies revealed that the prevalent mountain-taiga landscapes in the study areas, which were formed mainly on carbonate rocks, were characterized by low Na content, an abnormal ratio

Effect of carbon source on the migration and transformation of sulfate and rare earth elements in wastewater by sulfate-reducing anaerobic digestion.

The rare earth extraction wastewater containing trace amounts of rare earth elements (REE3+), posed significant environmental risks and complicated recovery efforts. Sulfate-reduced anaerobic digestion (SRAD) offered promising treatment for the wastewater. However, the influence of carbon source on the collaborative transformation of sulfate and REE3+ within SRAD remained inadequately explored. Thus, this study explored the transformation of sulfate and REE3+ under different carbon source conditions. The results demonstrated that, despite the advantage of ethanol in electron donation, it was l

Behaviour of flotation tailings from a rare earth element deposit at high salinity.

Various rare earth element (REE) deposits hosted by carbonatite complexes have been identified in southern (Montviel, Niobec) and northern Quebec (Eldor deposit). During the winter in Quebec, the use of road salts to facilitate transportation on the mine site and/or avoid water freezing during mine operation may be necessary. The sources of salinity can be diverse on a mine site: process water, precipitation, alteration of minerals in the soil. Thus, tailings may come in contact with these salts and react. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the impact of salinity on the behaviour

Rare earth elements as emerging contaminants: Multi-source release, geochemical tracing, and implications for environmental monitoring and management.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are increasingly vital to green and high-tech industries, but their expanding use has led to widespread environmental contamination. This review evaluates REE release pathways, tracing methodologies, and knowledge gaps that limit effective environmental management. We synthesize REE inputs across mining, agricultural, industrial, and medical sectors. In mixed-source environments, overlapping geochemical signatures complicate source identification, a challenge exacerbated by global REE recycling rates below 1% and dissipation rates exceeding 90%. Against this backdrop

Biosynthesis of cerium and gadolinium nanoparticles by Pseudomonas putida KT2440 enables sustainable rare earth elements utilization.

Lanthanides (Ln), a group of 15 rare earth elements (REEs), are critical for advanced technologies, although their conventional extraction and processing are environmentally unsustainable. Here, we present a microbial platform based on Pseudomonas putida KT2440 for the eco-friendly recovery and transformation of Ln, introducing a key methodological innovation: the use of a resting cell system to circumvent the pervasive issue of abiotic lanthanide-phosphate precipitation. This approach enables controlled investigation of Ln biomineralization under mild conditions. Mechanistically, the results

Species sensitivity distribution of rare earth elements: A full overview.

Rare earth elements (REEs) encompass 15 lanthanides and play a crucial role in modern technology. Despite their essential uses, REEs are emerging environmental contaminants due to their growing presence in industrial, agricultural, and medical applications. For the first time, the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) approach was applied to REEs considering 58 papers including toxicity about Ce, Dy, Er, Gd, La, Lu, Nd, Pr, Sm, and Y. SSD curves were constructed by log-logistic model providing comprehensive comparisons of the sensitivities of different species to the relative REEs deriving th

Selective preparation of samarium phosphates from transition metal mixed solution by two-step precipitation.

Samarium-cobalt alloys are used as materials for powerful magnets with relatively high Curie temperatures. Samarium is a valuable and expensive material because it is one of a group of rare earth elements. In order to utilize this rare earth resource in a sustainable society, it is necessary to recover, reuse, and recycle rare earth elements. With this in mind, a new process for recovering neodymium phosphate from neodymium-iron mixed aqueous solutions has recently been reported, avoiding the difficulties reported with conventional methods. Given that rare earth phosphates are a major componen

[Application of rare-earth elements as labels in studying biologically active compounds. III. Natural and magnetic circular dichroism of complexes of rare-earth elements with pyridoxalidene amino acid complexes].

Circular dichroism of pyrodoxalidenaminoacid complexes with rare earths and other metals and magnetic circular dichroism of several neodimium complexes are investigated. CD spectra of the complexes of the rare earths with azometines made of different amino acids could be classified into four groups. Some of the CD spectra are shown to be individual. The dependence of the CD spectra on the rare earch ion dimension is considered. Coordination of the rare earth ions is shown to be the same as in the case of zinc, cobalt, iron or copper.

Upcycling kaolin bleaching wastewater into a biogenic Fe-based nanocomposite for selective rare earth elements recovery.

Iron-based adsorbents are predominantly synthesized from chemical iron salts, leading to additional resource consumption and secondary environmental burdens. In contrast, the conversion of iron-containing industrial waste into functional recovery materials has received limited attention. This study addresses the dual challenges of hazardous kaolin bleaching wastewater disposal and REE resource loss by developing a novel "waste-derived material for waste treatment" strategy. Specifically, we employed kaolin bleaching wastewater as an unconventional iron source to construct a sustainable bio-ino

Occupational exposure to rare earth elements: Assessment of external and internal exposure.

Our study investigated occupational exposure to rare earth elements (REEs) in a major REE processing plant from North China by assessing both external exposure and internal exposure in the workers. An exposure group, including 50 workers in the processing plant, and a control group, including 50 workers from a liquor factory located 150 km away from the exposure group, were recruited in the study. Portable air sampler was employed to accurately measure individual exposure to the external environment, and the data demonstrating significantly higher contamination in the REE processing plant comp

Colonization and bioweathering of monazite by Aspergillus niger: solubilization and precipitation of rare earth elements.

Geoactive fungi play a significant role in bioweathering of rock and mineral substrates. Monazite is a phosphate mineral containing the rare earth elements (REE) cerium, lanthanum and neodymium. Little is known about geomicrobial transformations of REE-bearing minerals which are also relevant to REE biorecovery from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial reserves. The geoactive soil fungus Aspergillus niger colonized monazite in solid and liquid growth media without any apparent growth inhibition. In a glucose-minerals salts medium, monazite enhanced growth and mycelium extensively covered rock par

Effects of Iron-Organic Matter Colloids on Transport of Rare Earth Elements in Saturated Porous Medium.

Colloids, such as iron-humic acid (Fe-HA) colloids, are key vectors for the transport of potentially hazardous elements such as rare earth elements (REEs) due to their strong adsorption capacity and high mobility. These heterogeneous particles vary in size and composition and are highly sensitive to changing biogeochemical conditions (e.g., pH, redox potential). However, their transformation during transport and the resulting impact on contaminant behavior remain underexplored. In this study, batch and column experiments were combined to investigate how Fe-HA colloid heterogeneity influences R

Effect of pre-treatment and direct contact on rare earth element bioleaching from former Pea Ridge mine tailings by phosphate-solubilizing microbes.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical materials essential to modern energy, electronic, and defense technologies, yet their supply and extraction is environmentally intensive and geopolitically complex. Biohydrometallurgy using phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) offers a promising low-impact mineral processing scheme, though mechanistic understanding of microbe-ore interactions remains limited. Five PSM strains were used to examine REE bioleaching from monazite-rich mine tailings obtained from the Pea Ridge deposit in Missouri, USA: Gluconobacter oxydans, Paraburkholderia fungorum,

Supramolecular Self-Assembly of EF-Hand Modular Peptides for Aqueous Separation of Rare Earth Elements.

Efficient and green separation of rare earth elements (REE) remains a critical challenge, with conventional solvent extraction relying heavily on toxic organic solvents. Herein, three biomimetic peptides (NF-H1, NF-H2, and NF-H3) integrating the Nap-FF hydrophobic assembly motif with EF-hand-derived REE-recognition sequences were designed for fully aqueous REE separation. The peptides form stable, preassembled β-sheet scaffolds via Nap-FF-mediated hydrophobic interactions and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, within which specific coordination of RE3+ with EF-hand side-chain carboxyl groups neu

Continuous Evolution of Calmodulin for High-Purity Separation of Rare Earth Elements.

The grand challenge of separating critical rare earth elements (REEs) stems from their similar physicochemical properties, requiring complex process flow-sheets to achieve high-purity products. Protein-based strategies offer selective and sustainable alternatives to conventional separation processes. While native proteins have been identified for REE processing, protein engineering to enhance the separation of REE mixtures remains constrained by low-throughput methods that limit the exploration of amino acids beyond the metal coordination sphere. Here, we developed a selection circuit based on

Accelerated dissolution mechanisms of rare earth elements in waste permanent magnet with oxygen vacancy.

Slow dissolution rate of magnet oxides is an important barrier to the separation of rare earth elements. We can combine mechanochemical processing with extraction using deep eutectic solvents (DES) to achieve an accelerated dissolution of iron (Fe) and neodymium (Nd) in permanent magnet oxides. The dissolution rate of Nd was found to increase to a greater extent compared to that of Fe, which was partly because iron oxide (Fe2O3) possessed a higher internal energy reserve than neodymium oxide (Nd2O3). The emergence of oxygen vacancies played a primary role for the enhanced dissolution and rate
