Investigating the impact of estetrol and 17α-ethinylestradiol on thyroid hormonal signaling during zebrafish (Danio rerio) metamorphosis.

The thyroid axis orchestrates key biological functions in fish, including metamorphosis. Disruption of thyroid signaling by endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), particularly estrogens, remains understudied during this sensitive period. This study compared the thyroidal effects of two estrogens: 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic compound widely used in combined oral contraceptives (COCs), and estetrol (E4), a natural estrogen produced only during pregnancy and recently introduced as the estrogenic component of a new COC. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to EE2 and E4 at concentratio

Growing up under stress: Chemical pollution and heatwaves affect development and metamorphosis of abalone larvae.

Successful development and dispersal of meroplanktonic larvae are critical for recruitment and population dynamics of benthic invertebrates. With increasing anthropogenic stressors on marine ecosystems, it is essential to understand how combined pressures impact these sensitive early life stages. We investigated the effects of different types of chemical pollution in combination with a simulated marine heatwave (+5 °C) on larval stages of the abalone Haliotis tuberculata coccinea, an endangered subspecies endemic to Macaronesia. Larvae were exposed for 48 h to crude oil, leachates of car tire

Early ontogenesis from embryo to juvenile in Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis under laboratory conditions.

Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, is a flatfish of high commercial value in the world. It has been identified as an interesting and promising species for marine commercial aquaculture diversification in Europe for at least four decades and was introduced to China in 2003. Early ontogenesis from embryo to juvenile stages in S. senegalensis was analysed under controlled laboratory conditions to provide morphological information for aquaculture. From 0 to 59 days post hatching (dph), 10-20 larvae were sampled and measured each day (0-17 dph) or every 2-6 days (17-59 dph). Morphological charact

Effects of perchlorate and exogenous T4 on growth, development and tail resorption of Rana chensinensis.

Endocrine disruptors have been demonstrated to exert adverse effects on growth and development of amphibians by disrupting hormone levels. Tail resorption, which is one of the most remarkable events during amphibian metamorphosis, is closely associated with thyroid hormones levels. However, limited research has been conducted on the effects of endocrine disruptors on tail resorption in amphibians. This study explored the effects of NaClO4 and T4 on the growth, development and tail resorption during the metamorphosis of Rana Chensinensis. The results demonstrated that exposure to NaClO4 led to

Effects of perchlorate and exogenous T4 exposures on development, metamorphosis and endochondral ossification in Bufo gargarizans larvae.

Several endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been proven to interfere with the physiological function of thyroid hormone (TH), which affected growth and development. However, few studies have investigated the effects of EDCs on TH axis with consequence for skeletal development in amphibians. This study thus examined the potential role of perchlorate and T4 in growth, development and endochondral ossification during metamorphosis of Bufo gargarizans. Our studies showed that NaClO₄ treatment caused weight gain and delayed the developmental stage in B. gargarizans tadpoles, while T4 decreas

Skull development in the Iberian newt, Pleurodeles waltl (Salamandridae: Caudata: Amphibia): timing, sequence, variations, and thyroid hormone mediation of bone appearance.

The cranial ossification sequence in Pleurodeles waltl is widely used in phylogenetic analyses of amphibian origin and evolution. However, the patterns published to date are far from completely resolved and contain certain discrepancies. Based on a large sample of P. waltl specimens ranging from early post-hatching larvae to post-metamorphic newts, we determined the most common cranial ossification sequence and revealed its intraspecific variations. Since thyroid hormones (THs) are involved in the mediation of skull development in salamanders, we studied the role of THs in the cranial developm

Exposure Impacts of Environmentally Relevant Concentrations of a Glufosinate Ammonium Herbicide Formulation on Larval Development and Thyroid Histology of Xenopus laevis.

Thyroid hormones play critical roles in body growth and development as well as reproduction. They also influence the activities of a wider variety of tissues and biological functions, such as osmoregulation, metabolism, and especially metamorphosis in organisms, such as frogs. These complex activities of thyroid hormones are prone to disruption by agricultural pesticides, often leading to modulation of growth and the reproductive system in particular. These substances include Glufosinate ammonium, Glyphosates, Imazapyr, Penoxsulam, and Diquat dibromide among other herbicides. In this study, th

Dynamic modification of oral innervation during metamorphosis in Branchiostoma belcheri, the oriental lancelet.

The oral apparatus in lancelets undergoes a remarkable modification during larval development, especially during metamorphosis, when the oral innervation is radically altered. The larval mouth opens on the left side at the early larval stage, and a peripheral nerve network, the oral nerve ring (ONR), develops around it. The ONR enlarges as the mouth expands caudally, eventually receiving fibers from nerves as far back as the tenth on the left side. The mouth shrinks during metamorphosis, and with this change the ONR regresses; the posterior sixth to tenth nerves become freed from the connectio

The development of Onchocerca ochengi (nematoda: filariodea) to the infective stage in Simulium damnosum s.l. with a note on the histochemical staining of the parasite.

Onchocerca ochengi, an intradermal filarial parasite of cattle in Africa, was shown to develop normally to the infective stage in a member of the Simulium damnosum complex, almost certainly S. sanctipauli. The development of the parasite in the thoracic musculature and head of the fly was completed in 6 days at an ambient temperature of 25-30 degrees C. The larvae were very similar in rates of development, morphology and distribution to those of the human parasite O. volvulus in the same vector. No histochemical differences were found in the enzyme staining of O. ochengi distinct from the patt

Metamorphosis of the central nervous system of Megaphragma viggianii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae).

Miniaturization, egg parasitism, and the presence of anucleate neurons in adults can greatly affect the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the central nervous system (CNS) during metamorphosis. Such features have already been shown for the brain of Megaphragma, but have not been examined for other parts of the nervous system. Using histological methods, confocal microscopy, and three-dimensional computer modeling, we describe the structure of the CNS during the pupal development of Megaphragma viggianii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). The processes of compactization and oligomer

Early Ontogenetic Allometry and Shifting Modularity in Skull Development of the Red Sea Anemonefish, Amphiprion bicinctus.

Modularity is an inherent property of organismal design where organisms are subdivided into quasi-independent units. Studies have shown that patterns of modularity can dramatically shift during the ontogenies of direct developing organisms. However, it is unclear how modularity patterns shift in organisms that undergo metamorphosis which is a dynamic period of development where organisms undergo morphological changes in response to ecological or physiological cues. Here we examined the ontogenetic modularity of the skull in the Red Sea anemonefish, Amphiprion bicinctus, across four larval stag

Differential bioconcentration and depuration of diphenhydramine in Xenopus laevis tadpoles and frogs.

Though bioconcentration of ionizable pharmaceuticals has received increased attention in fish and invertebrates, an understanding of bioconcentration of these contaminants of emerging concern by amphibians is lacking. Here, we investigated the bioconcentration, elimination and metabolism of a model weak base, the antihistamine diphenhydramine (DPH), at different developmental stages in the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), a well-established amphibian model. These developmental stages of X. laevis included tadpoles at pre-metamorphic stages (NF 49-52), tadpoles at pro-metamorphic and clima

Unraveling the transcriptomic landscape of eye migration and visual adaptations during flatfish metamorphosis.

Flatfish undergo a remarkable metamorphosis from symmetrical pelagic larvae to fully asymmetrical benthic juveniles. The most distinctive features of this transformation is the migration of one eye. The molecular role of thyroid hormone in the metamorphosis process in flatfishes is well established. However, the regulatory network that facilitates eye movement remains enigmatic. This paper presents a morphological investigation of the metamorphic process in turbot eyes, using advanced imaging techniques and a global view of gene expression. The study covers migrant and non-migrant eyes and aim

Ontogeny of the middle ear and auditory sensitivity in the Natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita).

In most anuran amphibians, acoustic communication is of prime importance for mate localization and selection. The tympanic middle ear increases auditory sensitivity and directionality and is therefore expected to be favoured by natural selection. However, especially within the family of true toads (Bufonidae) there is a tendency for species to lose parts of the middle ear apparatus and consequently have a reduced sensitivity to high-frequency sounds (above 1 kHz). Part of the explanation for this may be that development of the middle ear is especially slow in bufonids, and thus the middle ear

Evidence of a hemolymph-born factor that induces onset of maturation in Manduca sexta larvae.

Insect metamorphosis is a complex developmental transition determined and coordinated by hormonal signaling that begins at a critical weight late in the larval phase of life. Even though this hormonal signaling is well understood in insects, the internal factors that are assessed at the critical weight and that drive commitment to metamorphosis have remained unresolved in most species. The critical weight may represent either an autonomous decision by the neuroendocrine system without input from other developing larval tissues, or an assessment of developmental thresholds occurring throughout
