A pilot investigation of "metaphor blindness" in a college student population.

Previous research from our group suggests that patients with lesions in the left inferior parietal lobule (IPL)-which is concerned with abstract numerical cognition and cross-modal association (which is consistent with its strategic location at the crossroads between the temporal, parietal and occipital lobes) have difficulty understanding proverbs and metaphors (Ramachandran and Hubbard, 2001). In the current pilot investigation, we report "metaphor blindness" in a college student population; that is, either the complete inability or difficulty for otherwise intellectually non-challenged indi

The memory metaphors held by ordinary people: an exploratory study.

Metaphors are widely used by researchers to communicate ideas in cognitive psychology. This is the first study to systematically explore the naïve psychology of human memory metaphors. We attained this goal by surveying a large sample of the adult population resident in Northern and Central Italy (N = 846). Participants were administered four self-report questionnaires assessing their favourite memory metaphor, memory beliefs, autobiographical memory experience, and metamemory. Overall, the memory metaphors most endorsed by our sample were store, camera, computer, and map. Personal motives und

Confronting environmental sickness: disease metaphors in ecological art.

This article turns to a particular mode of analogy: the deployment of medical metaphors in feminist ecological art. It foregrounds ecofeminist artworks produced from the late twentieth century onwards to demonstrate how women artists were among the first to visualise the entanglements of human and environmental health, anticipating concerns that now occupy a central place in contemporary artistic and cultural discourse. Through metaphorical representations of environmental disease, these works interrogate entrenched cultural assumptions about medicine, care, vulnerability and the imagined boun

Using metaphors to build hope and hopefulness from depression.

Helplessness and hopelessness are common key dynamics of depression that often inhibit therapeutic progress and client recovery. Based on a case example, this article examines the processes for effectively communicating therapeutic interventions aimed toward building hope when other approaches have failed. It explores the use of therapeutic metaphors including assessing for positive outcomes, building the PRO Approach for creating therapeutic metaphors and using Hope Theory as an example of an evidence-based process for facilitating both hope and enhanced treatment outcomes. It concludes with

Predicting Mental Health Problems with Automatic Identification of Metaphors.

Mental health problems are prevalent and an important issue in medicine. However, clinical diagnosis of mental health problems is costly, time-consuming, and often significantly delayed, which highlights the need for novel methods to identify them. Previous psycholinguistic and psychiatry research has suggested that the use of metaphors in texts is linked to the mental health status of the authors. In this paper, we propose a method for automatically detecting metaphors in texts to predict various mental health problems, specifically anxiety, depression, inferiority, sensitivity, social phobia

Using Metaphors to Explain Molecular Testing to Cancer Patients.

BACKGROUND: Molecular testing to identify targetable molecular alterations is routine practice for several types of cancer. Explaining the underlying molecular concepts can be difficult, and metaphors historically have been used in medicine to provide a common language between physicians and patients. Although previous studies have highlighted the use and effectiveness of metaphors to help explain germline genetic concepts to the general public, this study is the first to describe the use of metaphors to explain molecular testing to cancer patients in the clinical setting. METHODS: Oncologist

Metaphoric perceptions of individuals with diabetes in Turkey: A content analysis.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus adversely impacts the quality of life due to treatment, changes in daily life, functional disability, and emerging complications. Using metaphors to convey perceptions of diseases and life experiences is crucial for understanding healthcare behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the metaphorical perceptions of "diabetes" and "being a person with diabetes" within a sample group of individuals with diabetes in Turkey. METHODS: A qualitative design was employed to investigate the metaphoric perceptions of 72 people with diabetes. Data we

The Embodied Effect in the Comprehension of Chinese Action-Verb Metaphors.

Embodied cognition holds that one's body, actions, perceptions, and situations are integrated into the cognitive process and emphasizes the fact that sensorimotor systems play a role in language comprehension. Previous studies verified the embodied effect in literal language processing but few of them paid attention to metaphors in embodied cognition. The present study aims to explore the embodied effect in the comprehension of Chinese action-verb metaphor. Participants watched a video containing icons and corresponding actions to learn the relationship between them and how to perform these ac

Use of metaphors when treating unexplained medical symptoms.

The words one chooses to describe personal pain mirror current usage, but may also hold echoes of an individual's lived experience. They may provide clues to the origin of physical symptoms that are medically hard to explain. The aim of this commentary is to propose, on the basis of the available literature, that verbal metaphors can prove effective in the psychotherapy of such conditions. I provide a case history of a 45 year old woman referred to psychiatry because of extreme 'burning' pain in her mouth and tongue. She had been to numerous doctors, had undergone a variety of tests, had tried

Alters in dissociative identity disorder. Metaphors or genuine entities?

How should the different identities (i.e., alters) that are thought to be typical for dissociative identity disorder (DID) be interpreted? Are they just metaphors for different emotional states or are they truly autonomous entities that are capable of willful action? This issue is important because it has implications for the way in which courts may handle cases that involve DID patients. Referring to studies demonstrating that alters of DID patients differ in their memory performance or physiological profile, some authors have concluded that alters are more than just metaphors. We argue that

Relationships with AIDS patients: clinical metaphors and preventive bioethics.

AIDS, more than most diseases, evokes compelling and tragic stories. The AIDS epidemic is "The Plague." We seek the optimally therapeutic relationship, embodied in the metaphor of the covenant. There is a fundamental human possibility of healing through dying. "Death teaches us to live." We advocate asking AIDS patients the explicit question, "How do you want me to work with you?" This can generate conversations that facilitate congruence in relationships. A reluctance to talk about uncertainties and limits is a major source of preventable ethical conflict and a major obstacle to fulfillment o

Rigidity, chaos and integration: hemispheric interaction and individual differences in metaphor comprehension.

Neurotypical individuals cope flexibly with the full range of semantic relations expressed in human language, including metaphoric relations. This impressive semantic ability may be associated with distinct and flexible patterns of hemispheric interaction, including higher right hemisphere (RH) involvement for processing novel metaphors. However, this ability may be impaired in specific clinical conditions, such as Asperger syndrome (AS) and schizophrenia. The impaired semantic processing is accompanied by different patterns of hemispheric interaction during semantic processing, showing either

A metaphor analysis of recovering substance abusers' sensemaking of medication-assisted treatment.

In this study, we examined metaphors invoked by people recovering from opioid dependence as they described the challenges and successes of using medication-assisted treatment. Metaphors provide linguistic tools for expressing issues that are confusing, complex, hidden, and difficult to state analytically or literally. Using data from eight focus groups with 68 participants representing four ethnic minority groups, we conducted a grounded analysis to show how recovering substance users communicatively constructed addiction and recovery. The primary medication, methadone, was framed as "liquid h

Right hemisphere dysfunction and metaphor comprehension in young adults with Asperger syndrome.

This study examined whether the known difficulties in metaphor comprehension exhibited by persons with Asperger syndrome (AS) can be explained by a dysfunctional right hemisphere (RH). Using the divided visual field paradigm, 27 AS participants and 36 matched controls were presented with word pairs of four types (literal, conventional metaphors, novel metaphors, and unrelated word pairs), and were asked to perform a semantic judgment task. The main hypothesis was that whereas the control group participants will show RH superiority for novel metaphor processing, no RH superiority will be found

Metaphors we learn to sign by: Positive transfer effects of existing sign language expertise and gestural repertoire on metaphor inferencing in a novel sign language.

Our study investigated metaphor inferencing in second languages (L2). According to universalist accounts, L2 metaphor comprehension should be intuitive. However, cross-linguistic differences suggest that successful metaphor inferencing is subject to transfer effects. Little is known about the interaction of transfer effects involving modality differences in the context of sign languages. We investigated whether existing sign language expertise enhances SPACE-TIME metaphor inferencing in signed L2s. Crucially, we focused on SPACE-TIME metaphor inferencing because the need to abstract from salie

Beyond Representation: Metaphor as a Mechanism for Interpersonal Reconstruction of Embodied Experience.

Human experience is fundamentally embodied, involving the continuous interaction of external perception, bodily awareness, physiological states, and affective responses. However, because subjective experiences are multidimensional and personally situated, communicating their qualitative character presents a fundamental challenge. Existing theories of metaphor have primarily emphasized its role in conceptual representation, reasoning, and meaning construction, whereas less attention has been given to how metaphor enables individuals to make embodied experiences accessible to others. This paper

[The competent cell - the immune system as a metaphor, sign, language and culture].

We investigated how the progressive function of the metaphor, the model world of signs, language and culture, link the cell's immunological knowledge with a perceivable concept of the body. Using ethnomethodologically oriented, partly interpretative text analysis, we examined the lymphocyte stimulation test, word clusters in immunology and other medical specialties, the linguistic presentation of the body in German, American and the internet, the presentation of the "self" of the cell in biology and immunology, and protocols of oncological out-patient interviews and chatrooms.
