Nervous tissue lesions caused by elaphostrongylosis in wild Swedish moose.

During the first 5 months of 1985, 35 moose were obtained for necropsy at the National Veterinary Institute, Uppsala, Sweden. 17 (49 %) of these cases were found to be infected with Elaphostrongylus sp. The nematodes were found in the epidural space of the spinal cord and brain, around and in the sciatic nerves and in muscle fasciae. Predilection sites appeared to be near cauda equina and the fasciae of the thoracic, gracilis and sartorius muscles. Most of the infected animals were calves. Both sexes were equally represented. Pathological changes found were characterized by focal haemorrhages

A precipitin test for the diagnosis of human abdominal angiostrongyliasis.

A precipitin reaction was observed when sera of cotton rats infected either naturally or experimentally with Angiostrongylus costaricensis were tested by gel double-diffusion against sera obtained from three biopsy-confirmed human cases of A. costaricensis. With immunoelectrophoresis, the antigen was demonstrated in the serum of infected rats. The antibody in the human serum was mostly of the IgG type. No cross reactions were seen with sera from individuals infected with the common intestinal helminths, or individuals serologically positive for Toxocara, A. cantonensis, Chagas' disease, amebia

Prevalence of Lungworm Infections in Hedgehogs (Erinaceus roumanicus) in Greece and a Novel Therapeutic Approach for Treatment.

The most common causes of respiratory diseases in wild hedgehogs are the lungworms Crenosoma striatum and Capillaria aerophila, which can lead to life-threatening pneumonia. The aim of the current study was (A) to assess the prevalence of common lungworm infections in northern white-breasted hedgehogs (Erinaceus roumanicus) in Greece and (B) to identify an efficient and easy to administer treatment option. (A) Fifty-six hedgehogs were admitted to a Greek wildlife rehabilitation center and included in the present study. Fecal tests were performed using the flotation method (ZnSO4 33.2%) combine

Determinants of lungworm specificity in five cetacean species in the western Mediterranean.

BACKGROUND: Current data about Pseudaliidae show contrasting patterns of host specificity between congeneric species. We investigated how both contact and compatibility between hosts and parasites contributed to the patterns of lungworm infection observed in a community of five species of cetaceans in the western Mediterranean. METHODS: The lungs of 119 striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, 18 bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus, 7 Risso's dolphins Grampus griseus, 7 long-finned pilot whales Globicephala melas, and 6 common dolphins Delphinus delphis were analysed for lungworms. Parasite

The Fine-Scale Landscape of Immunity and Parasitism in a Wild Ungulate Population.

Spatial heterogeneity in susceptibility and exposure to parasites is a common source of confounding variation in disease ecology studies. However, it is not known whether spatial autocorrelation acts on immunity at small scales, within wild animal populations, and whether this predicts spatial patterns in infection. Here we used a well-mixed wild population of individually recognized red deer (Cervus elaphus) inhabiting a heterogeneous landscape to investigate fine-scale spatial patterns of immunity and parasitism. We noninvasively collected 842 fecal samples from 141 females with known rangin

First record of Halocercus sp. (Pseudaliidae) lungworm infections in two stranded neonatal orcas (Orcinus orca).

Orca (Orcinus orca) strandings are rare and post-mortem examinations on fresh individuals are scarce. Thus, little is known about their parasitological fauna, prevalence of infections, associated pathology and the impact on their health. During post-mortem examinations of two male neonatal orcas stranded in Germany and Norway, lungworm infections were found within the bronchi of both individuals. The nematodes were identified as Halocercus sp. (Pseudaliidae), which have been described in the respiratory tract of multiple odontocete species, but not yet in orcas. The life cycle and transmission

Migration and growth of Neostrongylus linearis (Marotel, 1913) Gebauer, 1932 in sheep.

In order to establish the mammalian parasitic cycle of the nematode Neostrongylus linearis 18 lambs were infected with 5000 third-stage larvae obtained from the snail Cernuella (Xeromagna) cespitum arigonis. In the subsequent days, larvae were found in the walls of the caecum and colon, in the liver and the lungs, suggesting that the bloodstream is the main migratory route. The presence of low numbers of migrating larvae in the mesenteric lymph nodes indicates that this route is probably secondary. The first still sexually undifferentiated, fourth-stage larvae were found in the lungs on the 8t

Lesions caused by Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei (Nematoda: Metastronglyloidea) in two cervid hosts.

Pathologic effects and host response were evaluated in seven white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and six mule deer (O. hemionus hemionus) each exposed per os to 300 or 1000 third-stage larvae of Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei. Pathologic effects in mule deer consisted of hemorrhagic myositis throughout skeletal muscles, severe verminous pneumonia, and moderate lymphadenitis. The major host response was a granulomatous inflammation associated with nematode eggs and larvae. Granulomas obliterated the normal architecture of affected tissues. Pathologic effects and host response were minimal

Regional distribution of feline lungworm Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in cats from Spain.

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, a respiratory nematode affecting worldwide cats, has different prevalence across Europe. This study aims to evaluate the rates of positivity of this parasite in the different regions of Spain, analyzing fecal samples sent to a reference laboratory for the Baermann-Wetzel technique, between 2017 and 2023. The estimated overall infection rate in Spain was 9.4 %, being the positive cases distributed throughout all climatic regions of the country, highlighting the wide distribution of this parasite. The northwestern region had the highest infection rate (19.5 %) and the

First molecular evidence of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in domestic cats from Africa and a synopsis of its occurrence across the continent.

Domestic cats (Felis catus) can be infected with a variety of cardio-pulmonary nematodes. Although Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is widely distributed globally, reports from Africa are scarce and refer mainly to wild felids. Moreover, some of these reports are considered as misidentifications. The only report in domestic cats in Africa is more than 20 years old and originated from Kenya. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of A. abstrusus in domestic cats from Harare, Zimbabwe morphologically on light microscopy and confirmation by molecular means. A total of 57 domestic cats were

Re-Evaluation of a Hyperendemic Focus of Metastrongyloid Lungworm Infections in Gastropod Intermediate Hosts in Southern Germany.

The metastrongyloid nematodes Angiostrongylus vasorum, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, and Crenosoma vulpis can cause severe cardiopulmonary and respiratory symptoms in domestic dogs and cats and free-ranging canids and felids (e.g., foxes, wolves, wild cats, lynxes). Recent data on the prevalence of A. vasorum infections in dogs and foxes and on the prevalence of Ae. abstrusus and Troglostrongylus brevior infections in free-ranging lynxes and wild cats revealed several endemic and hyperendemic foci in Germany. Nonetheless, long-term investigations on the prevalence of metastrongyloid larvae infec

Radiolabeling of Angiostrongylus vasorum- and Crenosoma striatum larvae: a novel method using PET/CT to unveil larval migration in the gastropod intermediate host (Lissachatina fulica).

BACKGROUND: Gastropod-borne metastrongyloid lungworm infections are poorly understood despite their importance in both veterinary and human medicine. This study intends to assess the use of nuclear imaging with whole-body positron emission tomography and computed tomography to scan radiolabeled Angiostrongylus vasorum- and Crenosoma striatum first-stage larvae (L1) while migrating in vivo in the obligate mollusc intermediate hosts. Here, the giant African snail (Lissachatina fulica) was used as a novel animal model for lungworm-associated investigations, as this gastropod species is known to a

Occurrence of Eucoleus aerophilus in wild and domestic animals: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) is a nematode with a worldwide geographical distribution. It causes a disease called lung capillariosis by affecting the respiratory tract of wild and domestic animals, and has also occasionally been described in humans. Despite steady increases in knowledge of the morphology of this neglected parasite, many aspects are still poorly understood. Epidemiological data regarding, for example, geographic distribution, range of hosts, clinical relevance and the actual zoonotic potential of this nematode are scarce and incomplete. METHODS:

[The effect of different temperatures on viability of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus first stage larvae in faeces of cats].

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus lives in the respiratory bronchioles and alveolar canals in the lungs of the cat and causes parasitic pneumonia. In present study, the effect of different temperatures on the viability of first stage larvae in feces of cats naturally infected with A. Abstrusus was investigated. Feces of cats were divided into two portions. One portion was left at room temperature (21-24 degrees C) and the other, left at +4 degrees C for three month-period. The fecal samples were examined by Baermann and McMaster techniques at 15 day-intervals. The number of living first stage larvae

The development of clinical signs and the population significance of neurologic disease in a captive wapiti herd.

Clinical signs attributable to meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis) were recorded in three male and three female wapiti (Cervus elaphus canadensis) ranging in age from 5 - 29 months. The study was conducted from September, 1976 to May, 1977 in a 2104-ha preserve. Some differences were noted in occurrence, time schedule and sequence of signs but the basic pattern was similar. The mean time between initial sign observed and death was 100 days. The effect of neurologic disease on population socialization, harvest and recruitment is discussed. A comparison of projected potential population

Experimental and field studies with thiophanate in pigs.

Thiophanate, administered at a dosage of 50 mg per kg to artifically infected pigs, removed 96 to 99 per cent of adult Oesophagostomum spp, Hyostrongylus rubidus and Trichuris suis. Activity was also high against larval stages of these nematodes, except for 26-day-old T suis. Thiophanate also showed ovicidal and larvicidal activity against H rubidus and Oesophagostomum spp. At 50 mg per kg thiophanate administered alone was inactive against Ascaris suum and Metastrongylus apri, the former species also being refractory at 200 mg per kg. Field trials confirmed these efficacy results in naturally

Lungworm infections in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in the German Wadden Sea between 2006 and 2018, and serodiagnostic tests.

Pseudaliid lungworm (Metastrongyloidea) infections and associated secondary bacterial infections may severely affect the health status of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in German waters. The presented retrospective analysis including data from 259 harbour porpoises stranded between 2006 and 2018 on the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein's North Sea coast showed that 118 (46%) of these stranded individuals harboured a lungworm infection. During this 13-year period, a significant difference in annual lungworm prevalence was only observed between the years 2006 and 2016. Lungworm c
