Exploring meteorological drivers in the transmission dynamics of viral and bacterial diarrhea: A modeling study in Davao City, Philippines.

Diarrheal diseases caused by bacterial and viral pathogens remain a significant public health concern, particularly among children under five years of age. In the Philippines, diarrhea continues to contribute substantially to childhood morbidity and mortality, with increasing evidence that meteorological conditions modulate transmission dynamics. This study examined associations between meteorological variables and diarrheal incidence in Davao City by integrating epidemiological surveillance data from 2006-2018 with meteorological records of temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity. Time-s

Predicting dengue incidence in high-risk areas of China through the integration of Southeast Asian and local meteorological factors.

Dengue, a climate-sensitive mosquito-borne viral disease, is endemic in many tropical and subtropical areas, with Southeast Asia bearing the highest burden. In China, dengue epidemics are primarily influenced by imported cases from Southeast Asia. By integrating monthly maximum temperature and precipitation from Southeast Asia and local provinces in China, we aim to build models to predict dengue incidence in high-risk areas of China. From 2005-2023, a total of 117,839 dengue cases were reported, with Guangdong and Yunnan provinces accounting for 57.8 % and 26.2 % of cases, respectively. Large

Investigating linkages between human movement and meteorological variables on dengue outbreaks in the Pacific Islands.

The Pacific Island Countries and territories (PICs) experienced a doubling of annual reported dengue outbreaks between 2012 to 2019, including concurrent outbreaks of multiple dengue serotypes. This has major health implications for the region as reinfection can lead to more serious health complications. Decision support systems for dengue can mitigate the risk of outbreaks by providing information on which early planning and proactive interventions may be based. Such decision support systems require an understanding of the factors that drive dengue outbreaks. Current efforts to build decision

Current and lagged associations of meteorological variables and Aedes mosquito indices with dengue incidence in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is an increasing health burden that has spread throughout the tropics and sub-tropics. There is currently no effective vaccine and control is only possible through integrated vector management. Early warning systems (EWS) to alert potential dengue outbreaks are currently being explored but despite showing promise are yet to come to fruition. This study addresses the association of meteorological variables with both mosquito indices and dengue incidences and assesses the added value of additionally using mosquito indices for predicting dengue incidences. Association of spring-summer hydrology and meteorology with human West Nile virus infection in West Texas, USA, 2002-2016.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of West Nile virus (WNV) in the Western Hemisphere has motivated research into the processes contributing to the incidence and persistence of the disease in the region. Meteorology and hydrology are fundamental determinants of vector-borne disease transmission dynamics of a region. The availability of water influences the population dynamics of vector and host, while temperature impacts vector growth rates, feeding habits, and disease transmission potential. Characterization of the temporal pattern of environmental factors influencing WNV risk is crucial to broaden ou

Study of meteorological aspects and urban concentration of SO2 in atmospheric environment of La Plata, Argentina.

This article presents and discusses SO(2) (ppbv) concentration measurements combined with meteorological data (mainly wind speed and direction) for a five-year campaign (1996 to 2000), in a site near an oil refinery plant close to the city of La Plata and surroundings (aprox. 740.000 inh.), considered one of the six most affected cities by air pollution in the country. Since there is no monitoring network in the area, the obtained results should be considered as medium term accumulated data that enables to determine trends by analyzing together gas concentrations and meteorological parameters.

What is the lesson from the unprecedented event over Antarctica in 2002?

Varotsos (2002a,b), suggested that both the smaller-sized ozone hole over Antarctica and its splitting in two holes in September 2002 occurred due to an unprecedented major sudden stratospheric warming caused by very strong planetary waves propagated in the southern hemisphere. Subsequently, a NASA press release of December 6, 2002, also reported the prevalence of very strong planetary waves in Antarctica. The aim of this Letter is to further discuss the morphology of the Antarctic ozone hole, to detect the causes that allowed the Antarctic stratosphere to exhibit this exceptional warming and
