A variety of agents have been used to coat aneurysms as an alternative to clipping. These agents were employed more frequently prior to the routine use of the operating microscope and the presently available variety of aneurysm clips. One such coating agent is methyl methacrylate. A shelf operation using cement held by screws inserted into the posterior wall of the acetabulum is described in cases of recurrent dislocation of hip prostheses. The procedure was used in 7 cases of total prostheses and 2 of femoral prostheses. The technique is simple and reliable. It should be used when there is no obvious malposition of the prosthesis or in the elderly when a further operation to re-orientate a faulty prosthesis would be too risky. The results were satisfactory with 7 successes in 9 patients.

A computational approach to simulate the formation of possible imprinted polymers in acetonitrile solution for theophylline (THO) is proposed, using combined molecular dynamics (MD), molecular mechanics (MM), docking and site mapping computational techniques. Methacrylic acid (MAA) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) monomers are used to simulate possible homo and copolymer structures. The model is able predict binding affinity and selectivity when considering THO analogues, such as caffeine, theobromine, xanthine and 3-methylxanthine. Comparison with available experimental data is proposed.

Fifty patients received a coralline hydroxyapatite sphere as a buried integrated ocular implant after enucleation or evisceration surgery. The surgical technique is described and the results discussed. All patients obtained final prosthetic motility superior to that possible with simple spherical methylmethacrylate implants. After a follow-up of 2 to 27 months (mean, 10.4 months) there have been no cases of migration or extrusion. Complications have been minimal and easily managed. Five patients with humeral nonunions were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with compression plating and adjunctive methylmethacrylate inserted by use of several techniques to gain secure screw purchase in markedly osteoporotic bone. The long-term outcome of 75 children who underwent methyl methacrylate cranioplasty over a 15-year period is presented. Forty-two patients underwent cranioplasty for posttraumatic skull defects and 33 for nontraumatic causes. Within 8 years following initial cranioplasty procedure, a total of 17 (23%) complications occurred. Several factors correlated with the development of complications, including postoperative radiotherapy, the size of the defect, involvement of the frontal sinus, and the presence of prior infection. Various classifications of scaphoid fractures have been based on plain radiography, but there are difficulties in defining the actual fracture line without an appreciation of the three-dimensional anatomy.
