Effects of hyperinsulinemia and obesity on risk of neural tube defects among Mexican Americans.

Although both maternal obesity and diabetes mellitus increase the risk for neural tube defects, it is unknown whether they are independent risk factors or manifestations of an underlying prediabetic state such as hyperinsulinemia. We investigated whether hyperinsulinemia was a risk factor for neural tube defects independent of obesity and hyperglycemia in Mexican-American women. We identified case and control women from residents delivering or terminating pregnancies in hospitals or birthing centers in any of the 14 Texas-Mexico border counties during 1995-2000. Case women had a pregnancy affe

Acculturation, Behavioral Factors, and Family History of Breast Cancer among Mexican and Mexican-American Women.

BACKGROUND: Incidence rates for breast cancer are higher among Mexican-American (MA) women in the United States than women living in Mexico. Studies have shown higher prevalence of breast cancer risk factors in more acculturated than less acculturated Hispanic/Latinas in the United States. We compared the prevalence of behavioral risk factors and family history of breast cancer by level of acculturation and country of residence in women of Mexican descent. METHODS: Data were collected from 1,201 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients living in Mexico (n = 581) and MAs in the United States (n

POLYDRUG USE PATTERNS AMONG MEXICAN AMERICAN WOMEN.

BACKGROUND: Co-occurring drug use among U.S.-born Latinas is underexamined. This study examines the relationship between polydrug use patterns and social inequality among low-income Mexican American women. METHODS: Data stems from 199 Mexican American adult women collected during the follow-up period of Proyecto SALTO, a longitudinal cohort study. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified patterns of past month's marijuana, amphetamine, cocaine, and heroin use. Age-adjusted multinomial logistic regressions were conducted between covariates and latent classes. RESULTS: LCA identified three class

Understanding sibilancias (wheezing) among Mexican American parents.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common pediatric chronic diseases in the United States; however, prevalence varies across Latino ethnicities, such as Mexican Americans (MAs). Linguistic and cultural issues may contribute to difficulties in diagnosis. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study to assess the comprehension of common words used in a validated asthma questionnaire. The study sample consisted of 40 MA Spanish-speaking parents of 2- to 18-year-old children, with and without asthma, at a community health clinic. RESULTS: Regardless of their child's asthma status, the majority o

Pubertal development in Mexican American girls: the family's perspective.

Mexican American (MA) girls are entering puberty earlier than in the past, yet few studies have explored the perceptions surrounding puberty among this group. We conducted separate focus groups for fathers, mothers, and daughters aged 6 to 12 years to explore perceptions of body image, pubertal development, communications, and sources of puberty-related information in MA participants. Our results revealed parental concerns about daughters' weight and pubertal development, as well as differences in their communication with their daughters. Although both parents willingly discussed pubertal issu

Culture, context, and the internalizing distress of Mexican American youth.

Latino youth appear to be at higher risk for depression relative to youth from other ethnic groups. This study assessed the relationship between nativity and several forms of internalizing distress among Mexican American middle school students as well as sociocultural factors that may help explain this relationship. Immigrant Mexican American youth (n = 78) reported significantly higher social anxiety and loneliness than U.S.-born Mexican American youth (n = 83). Acculturation stress and English proficiency were identified as significant mediators of these nativity differences. Although intern

Psychological distress among Mexican-American and Mexican women as related to status on the new immigration law.

Psychological distress in relation to the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act was examined among 90 Mexican-American and Mexican women divided into three groups (n = 30 each): undocumented immigrants who did not qualify for amnesty, undocumented immigrants who qualified for amnesty, and legal residents of the United States of Mexican descent. Results indicate that the undocumented immigrants who did not qualify for amnesty obtained significantly higher scores on hostility. Contrary to prediction, undocumented immigrants who qualified for amnesty obtained lower scores in anxiety (a statisti

The pain and suffering of a Mexican American woman with mobility impairment.

There is a dearth of literature examining how adversity shapes the experiences of pain and/or suffering in middle-aged Mexican American women. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to understand pain and suffering from a life course perspective as described by a Mexican American woman aging with early-onset mobility impairment. This Hispanic woman experienced episodes of abuse and rejection over the life course, which may have significantly influenced her pain and suffering experience in adulthood. This adds to the literature on how adversity influences later life pain experien

Rural Mexican-American adolescent sexual risk behavior.

CONTEXT: There is a need for community-based, culturally sensitive, cognitive-behavioral interventions to reduce sexual risk behavior among minority adolescents. Studies of adolescent risk and protective behaviors have focused on identifying modifiable psychosocial variables that predict differential outcomes for subsequent intervention efforts. Research has been scarce in studies of rural minority adolescent women. PURPOSE: To examine the protective and risk behaviors of these rural Mexican-American adolescent women and their relationship to physical or sexual abuse. METHODS: Mexican-Americ

Well-being in the postparental stage in Mexican-American women.

There has been limited research documenting the effects of the postparental stage of the family cycle in Mexican-American women. This study compared the psychological and physical well-being of middle-aged Mexican-American women from San Antonio who had children present in the home with those who no longer had any children present in the home (postparental). The findings are consistent with the results from studies with other groups that indicate that the postparental stage does not appear to have negative consequences on the psychological and physical well-being of women. However, employment

Nutritional beliefs and practices in primigravid Mexican-American women.

One hundred and thirty-one young Mexican-American women were interviewed and assessed nutritionally at their first obstetrical visit in a city-county hospital. About half had an intake of less than the recommended allowance for one or more nutrients or were frankly anemic, as judged by hemoglobin levels. The majority demonstrated little accurate information concerning foods as sources of nutrients. Considerable confusion was shown in their answers to questions concerning newborn birth weight, diet, and maternal weight gain. The fundamentals of prenatal education regarding nutrition for these p

Severe Cognitive Dysfunction and Occupational Extremely Low Frequency Magnetic Field Exposure among Elderly Mexican Americans.

AIMS: This report is the first study of the possible relationship between extremely low frequency (50-60 Hz, ELF) magnetic field (MF) exposure and severe cognitive dysfunction. Earlier studies investigated the relationships between MF occupational exposure and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or dementia. These studies had mixed results, depending upon whether the diagnosis of AD or dementia was performed by experts and upon the methodology used to classify MF exposure. STUDY DESIGN: Population-based case-control. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Neurology and Preventive Medicine, Keck School of Medicin

Sleep quality and alcohol-use disorders in a select population of young-adult Mexican Americans.

OBJECTIVE: Adult male Hispanics, particularly those born in the United States, are more likely to drink frequently and to consume larger quantities of alcohol than Whites or Blacks. Because alcohol and other substance-use disorders are frequently associated with disturbances in sleep, this study investigated measures of sleep quality and substance use disorders in a select sample of young-adult Mexican Americans. METHOD: Diagnoses of alcohol-use disorders and other psychiatric disorders (based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition, Revised), results from

Autosomal genome-wide linkage analysis to identify loci for gallbladder wall thickness in Mexican Americans.

The significance of gallbladder wall thickness (GBWT) in regard to gallbladder disease (GBD) is not completely understood. Thickening of the gallbladder wall has been observed in patients with acute calculous and acalculous cholecystitis and chronic cholecystitis. However, various pathologic processes, such as gallbladder cancer and nonbiliary disorders such as liver cirrhosis and viral hepatitis, could also cause thickening of the gallbladder wall. To date, there is no report available on the genetic factors influencing GBWT. Therefore we sought to estimate the heritability (h2) of GBWT and t

The role and meaning of susto in Mexican Americans' explanatory model of type 2 diabetes.

This article examines the role and meaning of susto (fright) in Mexican Americans' explanatory model (EM) of type 2 diabetes. This analysis is based on a study of the health beliefs about type 2 diabetes mellitus among Mexican Americans living in El Paso County, Texas, on the U.S.-Mexico border. Susto was described as an event that could change the bodily state, causing a susceptible person to be more vulnerable to the onset of type 2 diabetes after some unspecified time. The study results illustrate the integration of multiple etiologies into Mexican Americans' EMs of diabetes and illustrate

Improved Depression Symptoms Among Low-Income Mexican Americans Participating in a Community-Clinical Diabetes Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and comorbid depression face complex disease management. Salud y Vida, a diabetes management intervention for Mexican Americans in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, may mitigate depression through social support and community-clinic referrals. METHODS: In a cohort study, 292 Salud y Vida participants completed the patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) at baseline, month 6, and month 12. A PHQ-9 score of ≥5 indicated mild depression and activated a mental health referral. Using SAS 9.4 with significance set at <.05, we conducted multivariable longi
