BACKGROUND: Prior research recognizes that the visibility of an individual's disability is salient to understanding experiences, such that greater visibility is associated with higher levels of stigma and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Yet, the dynamicity of a disability, defined as the extent to which severity of an impairment fluctuates, has been relatively understudied. We conducted the first known quantitative examination of dynamicity.
HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that mental health and chronic illnesses would be most frequently characterized as dynamic. We also expected that dynamic

BACKGROUND: Gendered racial microaggressions adversely impact Black college women's mental health, but less is known about rural Black women's mental health.
OBJECTIVE: Examine the association between gendered racism, depression, and psychological distress.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 200 rural Black women from the Southeastern United States. Gendered racism was assessed using the Gendered Racial Microaggressions scale (GRMS). Linear regression was used to assess GRM subscales, depression (PHQ-9) and psychological distress (K6) as outcomes.
RESULTS: Of the 200, 21.5% report

BACKGROUND: Burnout and lack of professional fulfilment are prevalent among perioperative personnel, often exacerbated by a culture that lacks positive reinforcement. Microaffirmations-small, intentional acts of recognition-may offer a scalable strategy to improve workplace culture and well-being. The primary objective was to evaluate the impact of a microaffirmation-based intervention, the Microaffirmations in Perioperative Personnel Project (MAPP Project), on professional fulfilment and burnout. The secondary objective was to evaluate changes in perceived and experienced microaggressions amo

We discuss a recent controversy that occurred in The Cognitive Behavioural Therapist over whether Lilienfeld's critical views on microaggressions theory and research reflect racist beliefs, as alleged by some. This is one of many recent examples of a profoundly antiscientific practice whereby racism allegations chill scientific debate and open inquiry on important research issues. This produces an overtly politicized science that has a corrosive effect on scientific progress and ultimately the useful application of research in clinical practice. The microaggressions controversy provides an esp

BackgroundAttitudes towards menstruation are shaped by cultural and social norms and can result in misperceptions, impacting women's health. Yet, research on cultural differences in menstrual health remains limited.ObjectivesThis study aimed to examine whether South Asian and White British women living in the UK differ in menstrual health, with a focus on menstrual experiences, menstrual literacy, stigma-related factors, and ethnic microaggressions in the healthcare context.DesignWhite British (n = 153) and South Asian (n = 153) menstruating women living in the UK participated in a preregister

Experiences of racial discrimination have been shown to increase risk for alcohol problems. Some individuals may be particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of racial discrimination. However, little research has examined interaction effects between racial discrimination and individual characteristics, such as genetic predispositions and personality, in relation to alcohol outcomes. This study examined whether genetic risk and dimensions of impulsivity moderate the association between racial discrimination and alcohol problems among African American young adults (n = 383, Mage = 20.65, S

Underserved racial/ethnic minoritized youth disproportionately experience adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and discrimination, potentially leading to substance use disparities. Understanding the co-occurrence of ACEs and discrimination can identify predictors of substance use. Latino/a/Hispanic youth (N=1,179) completed surveys from 2005-2016; ACEs and discrimination were assessed when participants were on average 21.6 and 23.9 years for substance use. Latent class analysis examined differential co-occurrence of ACEs and discrimination and regression analysis investigated their longitudina

College students indicate high use of alcohol and marijuana; cultural influences may affect substance use. This study assessed the associations between alcohol and marijuana past 30-day use, and microaggressions, acculturation, and familism among Latinx college students. Participants (n = 484) completed measures, and structural equation modeling was used to yield results. Findings suggested that microaggressions were a risk factor for alcohol use, (B = -1.29, p = .007) while acculturation was a risk factor for marijuana use (B = 1.06, p = .011). No other statistically significant associations

INTRODUCTION: Professional identity formation (PIF) is increasingly understood not only as becoming a physician but as a matter of being and belonging within the profession. The development of a holistic professional identity can enhance a physician's confidence, wellbeing and performance. Assessment is a central site of the socialisation through which PIF occurs, yet how learners experience assessment when it is felt to be biassed or exclusionary, and what this means for their identity formation, is not well understood. We aimed to explore if and how medical students experience identity-relat

AIM: This prospective study examined whether prepandemic sexual stigma, affective symptoms, and family support can predict fear of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals.
METHODS: Data of 1,000 LGB individual on prepandemic sociodemographic characteristics, sexual stigma (familial sexual stigma [FSS] measured by the Homosexuality-Related Stigma Scale, internalized sexual stigma [ISS] measured by the Measure of Internalized Sexual Stigma for Lesbians and Gay Men, and sexual orientation microaggression [SOM] measured by the Sexual Orientation Micr

Sexual orientation microaggressions are common on college campuses and can contribute to negative outcomes; yet little is known about their relationship with substance use outcomes. Among a convenience sample of cisgender sexual minority college students (n= 574; 57.0% female, 24.9% people of color, 50.7% gay/lesbian; 72.4% public school) from 37 states (67.8% Midwest), this analysis investigates the association between hearing "that's so gay" and "no homo" on campus and hazardous alcohol use and the frequency of illicit drug use. Using multivariable regression analyses, the commonly heard phr

INTRODUCTION: Bisexual+ women are at high risk for alcohol use and sexual assault; yet reasons for high alcohol use among bisexual+ women remain unclear. The study aimed to examine: (1) antecedents of heavy drinking (i.e., microaggressions, coping motives, psychological distress) that could vary across drinking events and (2) how experiences might differ between bisexual+ and heterosexual women.
METHODS: Participants were 45 young adult bisexual+ (n = 24) and heterosexual (n = 21) women who reported heavy episodic drinking (4+ drinks in a sitting) at least four times in the last 30 days and a

BackgroundThe move to working from home necessitated by COVID-19 gave way to debate among employers and employees over return-to-office mandates and the merits of remote work. Amidst these discussions, employee narratives emerged centering on the improved work experience at home, including minimized mistreatment, stress, and emotional exhaustion.ObjectiveWe investigate whether working from home presents an unacknowledged benefit by buffering employees from experiencing incivility and microaggressions, thus affecting their sense of inclusion and well-being.MethodsThe sample comprised 428 Canadi

Trans and non-binary (TNB) people face mental health disparities, likely due to discrimination. This study aims to explore the types of discrimination that TNB people report and the corresponding coping strategies. A sample of 85 TNB adults between the ages of 18 and 46 years old completed two surveys a day for 30 days reporting discrimination, coping, and emotional state. The types of discriminatory events were grouped into four categories: rejection, active transphobia, microaggressions, and community-level transphobia. A total of 3240 discriminatory events were reported, with the most frequ

BACKGROUND: The number of international migrants continues to rise globally, particularly in countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This growing diversity presents sociopolitical challenges related to social cohesion, which are also reflected in academic settings. Some individuals are exposed to different forms of discrimination based on skin color, including both racial microaggressions and macroaggressions. Racism is a major determinant of health and has deleterious effects on those exposed to it.
OBJECTIVE: This protocol aims to analyze and

Existing inequities are exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar to HIV, COVID-19 disproportionately affects Black and other communities of color. Among Black women living with HIV (BWLWH) this study examined the relationship between community level and individual level social determinants of health and time to COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Utilizing longitudinal data collected between February 2021 and May 2023, pre-pandemic experiences of microaggressions, economic stability, health behaviors, resilience, self-efficacy and trauma/violence were modeled using latent class (LCA) and time-to

LGBTQ+ Asians are an under-researched population and face higher risk for mental health problems than heterosexual individuals due to intersectional discrimination and minority stress. This exploratory, mixed-methods study sought to understand associations between minority stress, intersectional discrimination, and mental health outcomes among LGBTQ+ Asians. Between 2022 and 2023, convenience sampling was used to survey 136 LGBTQ+ Asian residents of New York City. Controlling for demographics, logistic regression was used to compare the proportion of individuals with clinically-significant sym

INTRODUCTION: Heterosexist stigma, including microaggressions experienced in their own racial/ethnic communities, may partially explain disproportionate levels of substance use involvement among Black sexual minority men (BSMM). A strong sense of ethnic identity may provide BSMM with a protective resource. The purpose of this study was to explore associations between ethnic identity and substance use in BSMM.
METHODS: Data were from Black sexual minority men (n = 390 Mage = 25.28; SD = 2.81) in the PrEP and Substance Use National Survey collected from March 2020 to August 2020 that included s

Purpose: Sexual minority youth (adolescents and young adults) assigned female at birth (SM-AFAB) are at disproportionate risk of developing obesity compared with heterosexual cisgender youth AFAB. Grounded in minority stress theory, this study aimed to identify potential risk factors for obesity among SM-AFAB youth to inform the development of prevention and intervention efforts for this high-risk population. Methods: Data were collected in 2017 from 367 SM-AFAB youth (ages 16-20 years). Multinominal logistic regression was used to assess cross-sectional associations of race/ethnicity, sexuali

INTRODUCTION: Rural- vs. urban-residing sexual minority young adults (SMYAs) display higher tobacco use rates. Less work has identified minority stressors that contribute to geographic disparities in use, particularly at the daily level.
METHODS: We analyzed 2024 baseline and 14 days of daily survey data among 60 SMYAs (ages 18-34) reporting current tobacco use. Multilevel regression-based models with random intercepts and slopes examined between-person effects of rural-urban residence on daily minority stress (i.e., negative affect, positive affect, upsetting parent interactions, upsetting p
