Clinical applications of live biotherapeutics: Current trends and future prospects.

Live biotherapeutic (LBP) is defined by the FDA as a biological product that: (1) contains live organisms, such as bacteria; (2) applies to the prevention, treatment, or cure of a disease or condition of human beings; and (3) is not a vaccine. Progress in microbiome science and the limitations of antibiotics have necessitated the use of LBPs to complement or replace conventional therapies across multiple medical disciplines. The most important advancement is in the infectious disease domain, where fecal microbiota transplantation validated ecological restoration for recurrent Clostridioides di

Genome mining of alkaliphilic cyanobacterial consortia: identification of biosynthetic gene clusters in Sodalinema and associated heterotrophs.

Alkaline soda lakes are high-pH environments that host specialized microbial communities with potential for biotechnology and natural product discovery. We characterized three Sodalinema-dominated cyanobacterial consortia enriched from Canadian soda lakes over 510 days. Using hybrid metagenomic sequencing and metatranscriptomics across pH, alkalinity, and temperature gradients, we reconstructed high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes and assessed functional activity. All consortia converged toward cyanobacteria dominance and exhibited temperature optima between 21°C and 30°C. Phylogenetic an

Enhancing hexavalent chromium stable reduction via sodium alginate encapsulation of newly isolated fungal and bacterial consortia.

Chromium [Cr(VI)]-induced soil pollution is a serious environmental threat. Bioremediation utilizes specific microbes capable of transforming Cr(VI) into the less toxic Cr(III), however, microbial efficacy can be inhibited by elevated pollutant concentrations and competition from indigenous microbial communities. Thus, this study explored the potential of single and multi-domain microbial consortia encapsulated in alginate to overcome these shortcomings. The results revealed that (i) fungal treatments demonstrated an elevated tolerance and reduction ability for Cr(VI) compared to bacterial tre

Phylogenetic analysis of TCE-dechlorinating consortia enriched on a variety of electron donors.

Two rapidly fermented electron donors, lactate and methanol, and two slowly fermented electron donors, propionate and butyrate, were selected for enrichment studies to evaluate the characteristics of anaerobic microbial consortia that reductively dechlorinate TCE to ethene. Each electron donor enrichment subculture demonstrated the ability to dechlorinate TCE to ethene through several serial transfers. Microbial community analyses based upon 16S rDNA, including terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and clone library/sequencing, were performed to assess major changes in mic

Enhanced Endophytic Colonization of Flavobacterium Promotes Plant Resistance to Fusarium Wilt.

Microbial taxa in the soil microbiome with specific ecological functions play crucial roles in plant health. Flavobacterium is found closely associated with physiological functions that promote plant growth and enhance disease resistance. While cooperative interactions mediated by metabolite exchange can stabilize microbial consortia, the specific interactions between these consortia and plants remain understudied, particularly regarding their application in plant disease control. Here, we isolate a natural microbial consortium comprising Achromobacter, Flavobacterium, and Bacillus strains fro

Mineralization of trichloroethylene by heterotrophic enrichment cultures.

Microbial consortia capable of aerobically degrading more than 99% of exogenous trichloroethylene (TCE) (50 mg/liter) were collected from TCE-contaminated subsurface sediments and grown in enrichment cultures. TCE at concentrations greater than 300 mg/liter was not degraded, nor was TCE used by the consortia as a sole energy source. Energy sources which permitted growth included tryptone-yeast extract, methanol, methane, and propane. The optimum temperature range for growth and subsequent TCE consumption was 22 to 37 degrees C, and the pH optimum was 7.0 to 8.1. Utilization of TCE occurred onl

Harnessing microbial communities for enhanced plant resilience against diseases.

BACKGROUND: Phytophthora infestans (P. infestans) and other plant infections threaten global agriculture and food security. This research incorporated Pseudomonas strains in microbial consortia to boost plant tolerance to P. infestans. The P. infestans fungus causes collapse and deterioration in many crops like potatoes by quickly spreading through their tubers and leaves in warm, damp weather. OBJECTIVE: The main goals were to identify effective Pseudomonas strains (those with high inhibitory activity), test their interactions (both inhibitory and synergistic), and determine the effect of in

Simplified synergistic rhizosphere bacterial consortia enhance the antagonistic activities against Ralstonia solanacearum and improve plant health.

The rhizosphere microbiota plays a vital role in plant stress resistance and pathogen suppression. Bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, leads to significant economic losses in a wide variety of crops. The utilization of native microbial consortia has emerged as a promising strategy for combating this disease. In this study, we assembled a synthetic microbial consortium (Co-4) from rhizosphere bacteria with demonstrated antagonistic activity, comprising four strains of Bacillus sp., Heyndrickxia sp., Franconibacter sp., and Pseudomonas sp. In situ intein-mediated multiprotein assembly via engineered cross-species consortia.

Inteins can connect flanking external proteins into a new protein fragment and excise themselves. Here, we report the in situ splicing of proteins by engineered microbial consortia. This study pioneers a programmable microbial consortia platform enabling in situ protein splicing through split intein-mediated assembly. Engineered Escherichia coli with the ePop autolysis system release intein-fused protein fragments via synchronized lysis, while Pichia pastoris secretes complementary domains, enabling extracellular reconstitution directly in culture. Bacterial uptake by the marine sponge Aplysina aerophoba.

Sponges (Porifera) are filter feeders that take up microorganisms from seawater and digest them by phagocytosis. At the same time, many sponges are known to harbor massive consortia of symbiotic microorganisms, which are phylogenetically distinct from those in seawater, within the mesohyl matrix. In the present study, feeding experiments were performed to investigate whether phylogenetically different bacterial isolates, hereafter termed "food bacteria," microbial seawater consortia, and sponge symbiont consortia are taken up and processed differently by the host sponge. Bacillus and related genera in sustainable agriculture and their effectiveness for soil health.

Rising global demand for food has led to excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, increasing yields but damaging soils, biodiversity, and microbial communities. Alternatives such as the application of beneficial bacteria could restore diminished soil health and maintain productivity without these long-term costs. Bacillus species and related genera, such as Paenibacillus and Priestia, combine several useful traits, including phosphorus solubilization, nitrogen fixation, production of growth hormones, enzyme release, and generation of antimicrobial compounds. These abilities improv

Cross-feeding enables robust coexistence between four bacterial species.

Resource supply is generally considered a dominant driver of microbial diversity. Here, using a four-species bacterial consortium, we asked whether coexistence can emerge from interactions between species rather than being dictated by the external environment. Across 31 simple nutrient conditions, including 16 single-resource environments, all four species survived and coexisted over eight growth-and-dilution cycles. We then chose 28 additional conditions to further probe the boundaries of coexistence by varying resource concentrations, temporal dynamics, nutrient complexity and relief of auxo

Reorganization of a synthetic microbial consortium for one-step vitamin C fermentation.

BACKGROUND: In the industry, the conventional two-step fermentation method was used to produce 2-keto-L-gulonic acid (2-KGA), the precursor of vitamin C, by three strains, namely, Gluconobacter oxydans, Bacillus spp. and Ketogulonicigenium vulgare. Despite its high production efficiency, the long incubation period and an additional second sterilization process inhibit the further development. Therefore, we aimed to reorganize a synthetic consortium of G. oxydans and K. vulgare for one-step fermentation of 2-KGA and enhance the symbiotic interaction between microorganisms to perform better. Bacteria-algae synergy in carbon sequestration: Molecular mechanisms, ecological dynamics, and biotechnological innovations.

Rising atmospheric CO₂ levels require innovative strategies to increase carbon sequestration. Bacteria-algae interactions, as pivotal yet underexplored drivers of marine and freshwater carbon sinks, involve multiple mechanisms that amplify CO₂ fixation and long-term storage. This review systematically describes the synergistic effects of bacteria-algae consortia spanning both microalgae (e.g., Chlorella vulgaris and Phaeodactylum tricornutum) and macroalgae (e.g., Macrocystis and Laminaria) on carbon sequestration. These effects include (1) molecular-level regulation (e.g., signal transduction

Remediation potential of immobilized bacterial consortium with biochar as carrier in pyrene-Cr(VI) co-contaminated soil.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and potentially toxic trace elements (PTEs) soil contamination have become areas of concern. Bioaugmentation is regarded as an effective bioremediation method, however it is difficult to simultaneously degrade organic compounds and remove PTEs with individual microbial strains. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using immobilized microbial consortia, including two PAH-degrading bacterial strains (W1 and W2) and a Cr(VI)-reducing bacterium (Y2), for the remediation of pyrene-Cr(VI) co-contaminated soil. Three immobil

A designed moderately thermophilic consortia with a better performance for leaching high grade fine lead-zinc sulfide ore.

Unwieldy fine sulfide ores are produced during mining; without being appropriately disposed of, they can cause environmental pollution and waste resources. This study investigated the leaching performance of a moderately thermophilic consortia (Leptospirillum ferriphilum + Acidithiobacillus caldus + Sulfobacillus benefaciens) for fine lead-zinc sulfide raw ore. The results showed this microbial community created a low pH, high ORP, and high cell concentration environment for mineral leaching, improving bioleaching efficiency. Under the action of this consortia, the zinc leaching rate reached 9

Top-down/bottom-up consortia achieve robust γ-HCH degradation and reduced methanogenic contribution in wetlands.

UNLABELLED: Generalist non-obligate organochlorine-degrading bacteria (ODB) play an important role in the bioremediation of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH), yet their ecological roles and functional mechanisms remain underexplored. In this study, we used both "top-down" and "bottom-up" strategies to construct two functional consortia (M and Y13) based on non-obligate ODB. Both consortia demonstrated efficient degradation in sediment microcosms, reducing γ-HCH (C/C₀) to 63.0% (M) and 56.1% (Y13). Simultaneously, functional microbial consortia inoculation significantly suppressed the CO₂ reducti
