Acute tissue damage induced by monopolar microelectrodes and radiofrequency in vocal cords after transoral cordectomy.

INTRODUCTION: In 2006 and 2009, we reported the levels of acute and chronic tissue damage after cordectomy associated with use of the microlectrodes using high frequency energy. In 2010, we shifted to radiofrequency rather than high frequency electrogenerators. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate acute tissue damage in the larynx after cordectomy using microelectrodes coupled to a radiofrequencygenerator. METHODS: We studied 22 patients with a stage T1 glottic squamous cell carcinoma. The patients were randomly assigned to the two operating mode: cutting or coagulation (11 patien

Selective detection of endogenous thiols using microchip-based flow analysis and mercury/gold amalgam microelectrodes.

This paper describes the fabrication and characterization of thin-layer mercury/gold amalgam microelectrodes and their integration with microchip-based flow injection analysis. This microchip platform allows on-chip injection and lysis of erythrocytes followed by selective detection of intracellular glutathione (GSH) at low potentials. The thin-layer gold microelectrodes were amalgamated by electrodeposition of mercury. The electrodes produced a linear response for both GSH and cysteine in flow injection analysis studies utilizing both off-chip and on-chip injection. Comparative experiments us

Comparison of tumor and normal tissue oxygen tension measurements using OxyLite or microelectrodes in rodents.

In this study we compare oxygen tension (PO2) histograms measured with O2 microelectrodes and a new optical PO2 measurement device, the OxyLite, in normal tissues (mouse spleen and thymus) and in tumors (R3230Ac in rats) (n = 5-6). The transient response to glucose infusion or 100% O2 breathing (hyperoxia) was also measured in tumors. PO2 histograms of spleen and thymus with the two devices were not different. The OxyLite tumor PO2 histogram, however, was left-shifted compared with the microelectrode (median PO2 1.0 vs. 4.0 mmHg, P = 0.016). Both probes responded to acute hyperglycemia with a

Fabrication and Characterization of a Flexible Thin-Film-Based Array of Microelectrodes for Corneal Electrical Stimulation.

The electric stimulation (ES) of the cornea is a novel therapeutic approach to the treatment of degenerative visual diseases. Currently, ES is delivered by placing a mono-element electrode on the surface of the cornea that uniformly stimulates the eye along the electrode site. It has been reported that a certain degree of correlation exists between the location of the stimulated retinal area and the position of the electrode. Therefore, in this study, we present the development of a sectioned surface electrode for selective electric stimulation of the human cornea. The proposed device consists

Portable Electrochemical Platform With Carbon Fibre Microelectrodes Integrated on an OHP Sheet for Snake Venom Analysis.

Snake bite is a serious medical emergency often leading to untimely fatalities. Serotherapy is the only treatment method adapted for this, whose efficacy depends on identification of the Snake species and venom type. As a specific antivenom has to be implicated for saving the victim, in most of the cases, such identification is challenging, thus, leading to mortality due to delay in treatment or side effects of injecting polymeric non-specific antivenom. Therefore, a point-of-care, venom specific detection device could be an impactful diagnostic tool. Herein, a prototype of miniaturized electr

Dynamic and static calcium gradients inside large snail (Helix aspersa) neurones detected with calcium-sensitive microelectrodes.

We have used quartz Ca2+-sensitive microelectrodes (CASMs) in large voltage-clamped snail neurones to investigate the inward spread of Ca2+ after a brief depolarisation. Both steady state and [Ca2+]i transients changed with depth of penetration. When the CASM tip was within 20 microm of the far side of the cell the [Ca2+]i transient time to peak was 4.4+/-0.5s, rising to 14.7+/-0.7s at a distance of 80 microm. We estimate that the Ca2+ transients travelled centripetally at an average speed of 6 microm2 s(-1) and decreased in size by half over a distance of about 45 microm. Cyclopiazonic acid h

A self-calibrating microelectrode chip for glucose sensing in whole sturgeon blood.

An analog-digital self-calibrating microelectrode chip is reported for enzymatic glucose sensing in whole sturgeon blood. A non-enzymatic reference working electrode records common-mode background contributions, enabling fouling-induced signal drift to be compensated for by differential subtraction, while partial least squares regression (PLSR) refines residual matrix effects, enabling 0.1-8.0 mM detection, a 0.08 mM LOD, and short-term in vivo glucose tracking.

3D Spatiotemporal Electrophysiology of Cardiac Organoids Using Shell Microelectrode Arrays.

Cardiac organoids have emerged as powerful platforms for modeling human heart development and disease. However, traditional 2D microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are limited to planar recordings and fail to capture the 3D propagation of electrical signals. Here, programmable, shape-adaptive, organoid-encapsulating shell MEAs are presented as a technology that enables comprehensive 3D electrophysiological mapping. These on-chip-fabricated devices feature customizable geometries and electrode layouts tailored to an organoid's unique morphology. Shell MEAs generate high-resolution 3D isochrone and cond

First in-human microelectrode recordings of vagus nerve activity in heart failure.

We know that ischaemic cardiomyopathy leads to compensatory changes in the cardiovascular system to offset the reduction in cardiac output; there is a marked increase in cardiac sympathetic drive, as measured by noradrenaline spillover, and a marked increase in sympathetic vasoconstrictor drive to the skeletal muscle vascular bed, as measured by recording muscle sympathetic nerve activity from a peripheral nerve. Conversely based on assessment of heart rate variability there is believed to be a decrease in cardiac parasympathetic drive. Accordingly we might expect a decrease in ongoing neural

β-amyloid's neurotoxic mechanisms as defined by in vitro microelectrode arrays: a review.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the aggregation of β-amyloid, a pathological feature believed to drive the neuronal loss and cognitive decline commonly seen in the disease. Given the growing prevalence of this progressive neurodegenerative disease, understanding the exact mechanisms underlying this process has become a top priority. Microelectrode arrays are commonly used for chronic, non-invasive recording of both spontaneous and evoked neuronal activity from diverse in vitro disease models and to evaluate therapeutic or toxic compounds. To date, microelectrode arrays have been used t

Activation of inflammasomes and their effects on neuroinflammation at the microelectrode-tissue interface in intracortical implants.

Invasive neuroprosthetics rely on microelectrodes (MEs) to record or stimulate the activity of large neuron assemblies. However, MEs are subjected to tissue reactivity in the central nervous system (CNS) due to the foreign body response (FBR) that contribute to chronic neuroinflammation and ultimately result in ME failure. An endogenous, acute set of mechanisms responsible for the recognition and targeting of foreign objects, called the innate immune response, immediately follows the ME implant-induced trauma. Inflammasomes are multiprotein structures that play a critical role in the initiatio

[Development of in vivo drug sensing system with needle-type diamond microelectrode].

Continuous and real-time measurement of local concentrations of systemically administered drugs in vivo must be crucial for pharmacological studies. Nevertheless, conventional methods require considerable samples quantity and have poor sampling rates. Additionally, they cannot determine how drug kinetics correlates with target function over time. Here, we describe a system with two different sensors. One is a needle-type microsensor composed of boron-doped diamond with a tip of ~40 μm in diameter, and the other is a glass microelectrode. We first tested bumetanide. This diuretic can induce dea

Accuracy of Microelectrode Trajectory Adjustments during DBS Assessed by Intraoperative CT.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Microelectrode recording (MER)-guided deep brain stimulation (DBS) aims to place the DBS lead in the optimal electrophysiological target. When single-track MER or test stimulation yields suboptimal results, trajectory adjustments are made. The accuracy of these trajectory adjustments is unknown. Intraoperative computed tomography can visualize the microelectrode (ME) and verify ME adjustments. We aimed to determine the accuracy of ME movements in patients undergoing MER-guided DBS. METHODS: Coordinates following three methods of adjustment were compared: (1) those within the

Preparation, performance, and application of a stable, sensitive and cost-effective microelectrode array.

The development of rapid toxicity detection technology has higher requirements for electrode. In this work, a stable, sensitive and cost-effective microelectrode array (MEA) was successfully prepared manually. The advantage of the as-prepared MEA was discussed by means of detecting toxicity of 3,5-Dichlorophenol (3,5-DCP) by contrasting with bulk electrode and single microelectrode, in which mixed microorganisms were selected as biocatalyst, and K3[Fe(CN)6] was adopted as electron mediator. The current reached a stable state in 10 s under the constant potential of 450 mV. The feasibility of ra

Aldehyde-functionalized benzenediazonium cation for multiprobe immobilization on microelectrode array surfaces.

We report in situ generation of aldehyde-functionalized benzenediazonium cation (ABD) and its use as a suitable linker molecule for fast and selective immobilization of biomolecules on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrode surfaces. We prepared ABD through a new reaction procedure, a simultaneous diazotation of the amine group and deprotection of the aldehyde group from an aniline derivative, 2-(4-aminophenyl)-1,3-dithiane, which was revealed on the ITO electrode surfaces through the electrodeposition of the reaction product and the characterization of the resulting surfaces with cyclic voltammetry

Carbon fiber cylindrical microelectrode-based detector for the determination of antithyroid drugs.

An amperometric flow-injection method for the determination of antithyroid drugs such as 6-methyl-2-thiouracil (MTU) using a carbon fiber cylindrical microelectrode-based detector is reported. A home-made flow-cell specially adapted for working with cylindrical microelectrodes ranging between 4 and 10 mm in length was used for this purpose. Methanol containing 0.05 mol l(-1) tetrabutylammonium perchlorate as the supporting electrolyte was employed, and a potential of +1.6 V was selected for the amperometric detection of MTU. No cleaning or electrode surface regeneration of the fiber was necess

Microelectrode studies of Necturus antral mucosa. II. Equivalent circuit analysis.

Intracellular microelectrode techniques were employed to determine the equivalent circuit parameters in Necturus antral mucosa. Stable intracellular impalements were obtained using 15- to 50-M omega microelectrodes. Measured transepithelial and cellular potentials and voltage deflections produced by transepithelial current pulses were used to calculate the electrical resistances of the cell membranes and the equivalent electromotive forces (EMF) at both cell borders. The measured potentials were -4.1 +/- 0.8 mV for the entire epithelia, -41.8 +/- 5.1 mV for the apical membrane, and -45.9 +/- 5

The effect of ouabain on the isolated sinus node preparation of the rabbit studied with microelectrodes.

In 30 isolated, spontaneously beating right atrial preparations of the rabbit, the arrhythmogenic actions of ouabain were studied with microelectrodes. Ouabain (10(-6) M) uniformly produced the following events: (1) a gradual increase in sinus rate with periods of alternation of beta-to-beat atrial intervals, (2) a rapid rate and regular rhythm, (3) severe irregularity of rhythm, (4) total atrial arrest. Cycle length decreased from 394 msec +/- 43 (mean +/- SD) during control to 229 msec +/- 26 during the period of rapid rate and regular rhythm (P less than 0.001). Pretreatment with atropine o
