The ubiquitous environmental pollution with micro- and nano-sized plastic particles (MNPs) is a current and significant problem today. At the same time, lung cancer is responsible for the largest number of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Many research groups have investigated the relationship between lung cancer development and exposure to MNPs in recent years. Studies have demonstrated that these particles could enter the respiratory system in a variety of ways-both directly through inhaled air and through the bloodstream, and through internalization in the intestines and other digestive org

The widespread use of plastics and improper disposal have resulted in the ubiquity of microplastics in the environment, from uninhabited polar regions to terrestrial ecosystems. This ubiquity poses significant health concerns for our environment and health. Various in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo studies have indicated microplastic toxicity in humans' respiratory, digestive, neurological, reproductive, and developmental health. Recent studies have pointed out that these microplastics also have cardiovascular toxicity. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number one killer in the world, with o

Microplastics (MPs), defined as plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, are ubiquitous in the environment. The accumulation of MPs in various environmental compartments, such as the ocean, soil, and air, has raised considerable concerns regarding their impact on ecological systems, including marine life and human health. Notably, MPs have been detected in marine organisms such as shellfish and fish, and have even been found in the human body, including in the blood and placenta. Moreover, considering that MPs have been detected in drinking water, human exposure to these particles in daily li

Microplastics (MPs) are small pieces of plastic that are widely distributed in the environment and accumulate within living organisms, so they are the most common types of pollutants at the present time. One of the most widespread types of MP in the environment is polyethylene (PE) MPs. There have been many published studies on the effect of PE MPs combined with other pollutants or chemicals such as benzoanthracene, emamectin benzoate, heavy metals and 4-nonylphenol, on some marine, amphibian, and mouse models. However, research has rarely been conducted on how single-use PE MPs affect the ile

Microplastics are being increasingly detected in the atmosphere at altitudes relevant to mixed-phase cloud formation. However, the extent to which microplastics, along with their dynamic surface properties resulting from environmental weathering, could influence atmospheric microphysical processes remains largely unexplored. Here, through a series of ice nucleation experiments and droplet freezing assays, we highlight the capability of model polyethylene microplastics to induce heterogeneous ice nucleation via immersion freezing under atmospherically relevant conditions. We find that sunlight-

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in human fluids and organs is a great concern, since, as highlighted by recent studies on animal models, they could cause alterations of several physiological functions, including reproduction. In this study, semen samples collected from men living in a polluted area of the Campania Region (Southern Italy), were analyzed to assess the presence of MPs. N. 16 pigmented microplastic fragments (ranging from 2 to 6 μm in size) with spheric or irregular shapes were found in six out of ten samples. All the detected MPs were characterized in terms of morphology (siz

Plastics have caused serious environmental pollution. In recent years, microplastics (MPs) have caused widespread concern about their potential toxicity on animals and humans, especially on organ and tissue deposition. However, there is little known about the reproductive toxic effects of MPs in female mammals. In this study, the reproductive toxicity of polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) in female mice was evaluated after continued exposure for 35 days. Results showed that PS-MPs could accumulate in heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, brain, large intestine, small intestine, uterus, ovary and blood of

Industrialization has accelerated plastic production and emissions, resulting in pervasive environmental plastic pollution. Plastic debris can fragment into microplastics (<5 mm) and nanoplastics, collectively referred to as microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs). Beyond their ubiquity in ecosystems, MNPs have also been detected in human-relevant matrices (e.g., placenta and breast milk), intensifying concerns about potential organ-specific health risks. Although particle size is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of MNP toxicity, a cross-system synthesis of size-dependent effect

Microplastic pollution in the ocean is a growing problem. It affects the entire ecosystem and, therefore, the species that inhabit it. Plastics can be filtered or ingested by organisms, entering and negatively affecting individuals. Among the populations affected are crustaceans. In previous studies, fibers have been found mainly in the stomach contents of these animals, although other types, such as pellets, have also been found. This study examines the presence of microplastics in Cronius ruber, an invasive crab species in the Canary Islands, and investigates their potential links to nearby

Microplastics and nanoplastics have emerged as a major and growing health concern, with recent data revealing alarming levels of human exposure and contamination. Thus, there is a clear and urgent need for an effective method to remove microplastics and nanoplastics from the human body. Here, we provide the first evidence that extracorporeal apheresis, a therapeutic technique established around the world, may have the potential to achieve this goal.

Estuarine and bay environments, which can act as sediment traps along the inner parts of continental shelves, may host significant depositional hotspots for plastic debris. This research targets Texas coastal bays (Matagorda and San Antonio), to better understand microplastic contamination in sediments and provide insight into the processes controlling its distribution. Microplastic extraction and quantification methods employed include sediment sieving, elutriation, microscopy, and spectroscopy. This study found low concentrations (ca. 10s-100s particles kilogram-1 sediment or 20-200 × 104 it

Microplastics are a common environmental pollutant that disrupts the reproductive system of living organisms. We investigated the reproductive toxicity of 2 μm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in mice and treated them with PS-MPs for 6 weeks. We demonstrated that PS-MPs decreased the gonadosomatic index and the serum concentration of pituitary-testicular axis hormones (Follicle-stimulating hormone, Luteinizing hormone, and testosterone). The PS-MPs treatment also reduced viable epididymal sperm number and sperm motility. Our results also demonstrated a marked decrease in tubular differentiat

Microplastics contamination have been extensively reported in aquatic ecosystem and organisms. It is wildly acknowledged that the ingestion, accumulation and elimination of microplastics in fishes are species-specific, which mainly depending on the feeding behavior. This study aimed to investigate the effects of microplastics on the morphology and inflammatory response in intestines of fishes with different feeding types. Largemouth bass (carnivorous fish), grass carp (herbivorous fish) and Jian carp (omnivorous fish) were used as organism model. The contributing concentration and size of micr

Wastewater has been identified as one of the main contributors to microplastic (MP) pollution in aquatic environments. Hence, this study investigates the presence, characteristics of MPs in wastewater sample types (industrial, domestic, and medical wastewater), and also the removal efficacy of MPs by local wastewater treatment stations. Overall, industrial wastewater showed a higher MP abundance level at 60,881 ± 48,154 items/m3, compared to domestic and medical wastewater with values of 31,494 ± 10,142 items/m3 and 35,453 ± 13,186 items/m3, respectively. Fiber and fragment were the main shape

Microplastics are widespread in facility strawberry greenhouses and can be deposited on the surface of strawberries through air currents. Investigating effective cleaning methods represents a viable strategy to reduce human ingestion of MPs. Therefore, different cleaning methods were compared: ultrasonic cleaning for 30 min, deionized water rinsing once, deionized water immersion for 30 min, and fruit immersion in washing salt for 30 min. The MPs in strawberry washing water were analyzed and compared using laser direct infrared imaging to investigate their characteristics and the optimal reduc

Microplastic pollution is known to impact various abiotic and biotic components of ecosystems. Among the various microplastic remediation methods, biological approaches using microbes have gained significant attention due to their high efficacy and eco-friendly nature. In this study, the degradation of PET-based microplastics was carried out by the indigenous yeast strain Candida tropicalis in in vitro batch degradation experiments. The degradation was measured by monitoring the optical density of the yeast grown on a medium containing microplastic pieces, as well as assessing weight reduction

To accurately assess the ecological risks posed by real-world MPs, studies bridging microplastic (MP)-associated biofilms in different environmental compartments and their toxicological consequences are needed. This study investigated 50-week in-situ biofilm development on polyvinyl chloride, polylactic acid, and polyamide 66 (PA66) MPs across the water column and the sediment-water interface (SWI). During colonization in the selected river, the microbial community structures were primarily associated with environmental compartments rather than polymer types. By identifying the highest aging r

In this research, we examined the combined effects of hydrothermal treatment and different dewatering agents on the morphological, molecular, and functional properties of Polylactic Acid Microplastics (PLA-MPs). Under hydrothermal treatments, the presence of dewatering agents leads to pronounced alterations in PLA-MPs as evidenced by SEM, showing the compound effects of both treatments. In detail, PFS (polyferric sulfate) results in an enhanced porosity on the surface, PAC (polyaluminum chloride) imparts a distinct roughness, while Fe/PMS (iron/peroxymonosulfate) leads to surface deterioration

As two pollutants with similar transport pathways, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics (ATs) inevitably co-exist in water environments, and their interaction has become a topic of intense research interest for scholars over the past few years. This paper comprehensively and systematically reviews the current interaction between MPs and ATs, in particular, the role played by biofilm developed MPs (microplastic biofilm). A summary of the formation process of microplastic biofilm and its unique microbial community structure is presented in the paper. The formation of microplastic biofilm can enha

Microplastic (MP) pollution is an emerging environmental problem worldwide and has caused widespread concern both in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to their potential impacts on the human health, and health of aquatic organisms and the environment. Little is known about the exposure of top marine predators to MP contamination (debris 0.1μm - <5mm, also called MPs). For the first time, MPs have been characterized in carnivore demersal elasmobranch specimens of hardnose shark Carcharhinus macloti, and the whitespotted whipray Maculabatis gerrardi. The specimens were from the Persian Gulf
