Microradiographic and electron microscopic observations of the enamel-covered dentine in rat molars.

The enamel-covered primary and secondary coronal dentine in the molars of 90-day-old and 360-day-old rats was examined using microradiography. Some preparations were subsequently examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fractured dentine surfaces and methacrylate casts of the tubular system in the primary dentine were also examined with SEM. No microradiographic evidence of a hypermineralized peritubular matrix, such as that seen in man and other species, was seen in either young or old rats. Transmission and SEM confirmed the microradiographic findings. The tubule obli

Osteogenesis imperfecta tarda. The morphology of rib biopsies.

Undecalcified bone biopsy specimens from 10 normal individuals and 8 osteogenesis imperfecta patients, 2 to 30 years of age, were analyzed using microradiography as well as ultraviolet, tungsten and polarized light microscope techniques. Biopsies of ribs most reliably reflected the disease process of osteogenesis imperfecta when compared to those biopsies of long bones in the lower extremities deformed enough to require corrective surgery. The rib biopsies consistently revealed that there is a rapid surface turnover of histologically well-organized but osteopenic bone. The high rate of bone tu

[Pathomorphological study of maxillary invaginated incisor teeth].

Maxillary invaginated incisor teeth have been pathomorphologically investigated and some results have been obtained as follows: 1) The classification used in this study is as follows. That is, class I: Invagination is limited within the enamel. class II: Invagination extends toward the pulp chamber in a manner of pipe. class III: Invagination seen in class II expends at its end in the fashion of drop. class IV: Invagination occludes the whole coronal pulp chamber or extends toward the root apex beyond the cervical line. Frequent enamel-lined cavities of invaginated teeth were found to contain

Histological and ultrastructural appearance of the hydroxyapatite-bone interface.

This article describes the histological and ultrastructural appearance of the interface created in the implantation bed, between bone tissue and implants made of dense sintered hydroxyapatite (HA). Biopsies from dog subjects included: a) loaded permucosal dental implants for tooth substitution, b) subperiosteally placed implants for alveolar bone correction, c) endosseously placed dental root implants to retain ridge form following extraction. The light and electron microscopical results show extensive bone apposition on the osseous sides of the implant surfaces. There is an intimate, direct b

Nuclear cataract--a microradiographic study.

Nuclear cataract is a common type of senile cataract characterized by an increased turbidity and often a yellow to brown pigmentation of the nucleus. Twenty-one human lenses with different degrees of nuclear turbidity were, after intracapsular cataract extraction, examined by a quantitative microradiographic technique. The dry mass concentration was determined along the lens axis, and revealed an overall distribution similar to the normal lens. The concentration increased from the poles towards the center of the lens, to reach a mean level of 0.47 g.cm-3 (range 0.38-0.55). Though the appearanc

Remineralization of deep enamel dentine caries lesions.

Enamel remineralization is generally studied in superficial (up to 100 mum) lesions, but in vivo caries lesions may be tenfold deeper. This article addresses the question whether deep lesions, and extending into dentine, can be remineralized under optimal conditions and if this process is influenced by agents affecting calcium phosphate precipitation and dissolution. Lesions through enamel into dentine were first formed in thin sections and then continuously remineralized for periods up to 200 days. With longitudinal assessment by transversal microradiography it was showed that remineralizatio

In vitro and in vivo behaviour of zinc-doped phosphosilicate glasses.

The aim of this work was to study the behaviour of zinc-doped phosphosilicate glasses based on Bioglass 45S5. In vitro (in simulated body fluid), the reactivity was analysed by means of inductively coupled plasma spectrometry, environmental scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy (ESEM-EDS) and X-ray diffraction. In vivo (a rat implanted with glass), the reactivity and the tissue behaviour were analysed by conventional histology, histochemistry, microradiography and ESEM-EDS. The in vivo behaviour matches that in vitro perfectly; they show comparable glass degradation proce

Nuclear vacuoles in nuclear cataract.

The human lens nucleus has always been described as a homogeneous part of the lens, and if any distinct opacities are found, these are considered to be congenital. However, in lenses with nuclear cataract, both of senile type and those induced by hyperbaric oxygen, we have found relatively transparent vacuoles in the nucleus of similar appearance as cortical vacuoles. In cataracts induced by hyperbaric oxygen the vacuoles were reversible to some extent. The vacuoles have been investigated with slit-lamp photography and quantitative microradiography. Nuclear vacuoles were found in 11 out of 25

Effect of Fluoride Varnishes on Demineralization and Acid Resistance in Subsurface Demineralized Lesion Models.

This study aimed to clarify the effects of high-concentration fluoride varnish application on the inhibition of the progression of initial enamel caries. Remineralization capacity and acid resistance following high-concentration fluoride varnish application were compared with untreated models and models treated with fluoride mouthwash. Bovine enamel was used to create a model of initial enamel caries. The high-concentration fluoride varnishes Enamelast and Clinpro White Varnish and the fluoride mouthwash Miranol were used. Specimens were evaluated using Contact Microradiography (CMR) and an El

White spot lesions: diagnosis and treatment - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: White spot lesions represent the first stage of caries and their prevalence has been increasing in recent years, particularly in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. DIferential diagnosis and lesion activity are essential to decide on the clinical approaches to treatment. The aim of this study is to understand if the new diagnostic tools such as fluorescence, microradiography and computed microtomography have the potential to change the conventional treatment of white spots". METHODS: A systematic search of available studies in the literature was carried out, using PRISMA gu

The influence of varying fluoride concentrations on in vitro remineralisation of artificial dentinal lesions with differing lesion morphologies.

OBJECTIVE: The influence of low-level fluoride (F) concentrations and lesion characteristics on the remineralisation of sub-surface root caries was investigated in vitro. DESIGN: Experimentally produced dentinal carious lesions were exposed to artificial saliva in the presence of 0.00ppm, 0.48ppm, 2.49ppm or 4.91ppm F (as NaF) for 5 days. Calcium, phosphate and fluoride ion uptake was quantified by chemical assay. Baseline changes in the mineral content and distribution of the lesions were assessed by transverse microradiography (TMR). RESULTS: The uptake of calcium and phosphate was signifi

Human cellular mixed stratified cementum: a tissue with alternating layers of acellular extrinsic- and cellular intrinsic fiber cementum.

Following the first description of the formal genesis of acellular extrinsic- and cellular intrinsic fiber cementum on growing human teeth, the present paper introduces cellular mixed stratified cementum as a particular tissue. Based on a large and diverse material (human premolars and molars) that was examined by various methods, such as microradiography, light microscopy using transmitted and polarized light, and scanning- and transmission-electron microscopy, the composition and structure of this type of cementum is described. Cellular mixed stratified cementum covers the apex, the apical t

The fine structure and formation of hypermineralized petrodentine in the tooth plate of extant lungfish (Lepidosiren paradoxa and protopterus sp.).

Histological features of the tooth plate of lungfish were investigated by light and electron microscopy and contact microradiography with primary reference to the fine structure and formation of petrodentine, one of the principal constituents of the tooth plates. Petrodentine is a highly mineralized tissue noticeably analogous to that of enameloid, and is deposited intermittently in a proximal direction by the sole participation of mesenchymal petroblasts. The petroblasts appear very likely to have prominent biphasic functions of secreting the petrodentine matrix and of eliminating the matrix

In vivo remineralization by a monofluorophosphate dentifrice as determined with a thin-section sandwich method.

Artificial caries lesions were formed in thin sections of subsurface enamel sandwiched between protective sheets of plastic. Six lesions were placed into the buccal surfaces of lower partial dentures of seven subjects, covered with a stainless steel mesh to provide a plaque cover, and brushed with either a sodium monofluorophosphate or placebo dentifrice for four weeks, by means of a double-blind random cross-over design. Analysis of the lesions by quantitative microradiography revealed that significant remineralization (21%) occurred in the monofluorophosphate group and significant further de

Microvascular studies in human radiation bowel disease.

The microvasculature was investigated in the normal bowel (n = 43 patients) and in radiation bowel disease (n = 18 patients). Tissue samples obtained from postoperative colectomy specimens in which the intramural vessels had been perfused with barium sulphate suspension were examined. Microradiography was used to study vascular pattern which was abnormal in radiation bowel disease. A recently described radiograph fluorescence system was used to estimate barium concentration, and hence microvascular volume. The radiation group showed a highly significant reduction in barium concentration (p les

A microradiographic study of nephrons in mercuric chloride-induced acute renal failure in the rabbit.

Microradiography of nephrons was performed on glutaraldehyde-perfusion-fixed kidneys from rabbits injected with mercuric chloride. Kidneys were studied at intervals after injection of the toxin and compared with controls. All mercury-injected animals developed acute renal failure, determined by a rise in serum creatinine. At 6 hours, small filling defects were seen in proximal straight tubules, arising from the wall, and by 24 hours, widespread tubular obstruction was noted. By 12 hours, dilatation of Bowman's space and compression of the glomerular tuft were seen. At 18 hours, preferential ch
