BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive method for high-resolution, in vivo imaging of the epidermis and upper dermis. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the potential usefulness of RCM as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for Hailey-Hailey disease (familial benign chronic pemphigus).
METHODS: Four patients with Hailey-Hailey disease were examined by RCM. Subsequently, punch biopsies were taken to compare RCM images with corresponding histopathologic findings.

We studied the anti-Aspergillus activity of micafungin by using two fluorescent dyes to detect cell viability. Micafungin induced flattened hyphae, caused by the bursting of cells, which had lost their viability. Micafungin has killing activity against actively growing hyphae, even though it is not fungicidal against the whole burden of Aspergillus fumigatus.

Retroperitoneeal fibrosis (R.P.F.) and a positive direct Coombs test developed in a patient who had received 1.4 kg. of alpha-methyldopa over a period of 5 years. Magnetic order coupled second harmonic generation (SHG) provides a unique nonlinear probe of symmetry breaking in low dimensional magnets. Onchocercosis, caused by Onchocerca flexuosa, was observed in red deer (Cervus elaphus) from Spain for the first time. Adult specimens of P. flexuosa were found in nodules in subcutaneous tissues in 42 of 125 (33%) red deer between October 1994 and September 1995; intensity of infection +/- SD was 3.93 +/- 5.26 nodules per infected host. Chemical imaging holds great promise for chemical, materials, and biological applications. However, its contrast often relies on subtle spectral differences arising from molecular-level changes. A novel fluorescein-based fluorescent probe for nitroxyl (HNO) based on the reductive Staudinger ligation of HNO with an aromatic phosphine was prepared. This probe reacts with HNO derived from Angeli's salt and 4-bromo Piloty's acid under physiological conditions without interference by other biological redox species. Confocal microscopy demonstrates this probe detects HNO by fluorescence in HeLa cells and mass spectrometric analysis of cell lysates confirms this probe detects HNO following the proposed mechanism.

A novel approach was used to evaluate the distribution of sperm in the oviduct of turkey hens inseminated before or after the onset of egg production. Prior to insemination, sperm were stained with the nuclear fluorescent stain bisbenzimide. Sperm distribution in the sperm storage tubules (SST) of the uterovaginal junction and the infundibular tubular glands was determined by use of simultaneous differential interference contrast and fluorescence microscopy.
