Scanning electron microscopy of sarcoptic mange lesions in swine.

Scanning electron microscopy revealed that lesions of sarcoptic mange in swine, pass through 3 different stages. During the first 3 weeks of infestation, adult female mites tunnel into the epidermis. During the following 3 or 4 weeks, the surface openings of these tunnels become covered with keratinized epidermal crust which increases in thickness. After 7 weeks of infestation, the crust falls off, the tunnel openings become apparent again and most of the mites vacate these tunnels.

Correlated one-dimensional electron conduction in ferroelastic domain walls through nematic-like charge stripes.

One-dimensional electronic transport reveals many-body quantum phenomena and serves as a foundation for quantum devices, sensors, and reconfigurable electronics. Here, we demonstrate that surface-exposed ferroelastic twin walls in epitaxial WO3 films function as intrinsic one-dimensional channels, confining electrons to screen surface-bound charges induced by flexoelectric polarization. Scanning tunneling microscopy uncovers a self-organized nematic-like phase forming periodic stripes perpendicular to the walls. Dipole-Programmed Chiral Porous Superlattice from Triangular Molecular Platforms on Ag(111).

Trioxatriangulenium was functionalized with a rotatable pyridyl moiety (pyridyl-TOTA), which exhibits a large electrostatic dipole moment, and investigated on the Ag(111) surface using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM). The molecules arrange themselves in a complex, well-ordered long-range pattern, namely, a chiral hexagonal mesh of rings composed of six molecules. Submolecularly resolved STM images reveal the orientations of the molecular dipoles, which are confirmed by NC-AFM measurements. Density functional theory (DFT) calcu

Radical-Based On-Surface Transformation of Nonplanar Aromatics Into Nonbenzenoid Nanographenes.

On-surface synthesis has emerged as a powerful tool for atomically precise C─C bond formation, enabling access to low-dimensional carbon-based materials, often unattainable by conventional solution-based chemistry. This approach gave rise to a novel class of magnetic materials, namely open-shell magnetic nanographenes, whose magnetism originates primarily from unpaired electrons. Despite this progress, a fundamental understanding of selectivity and specificity of surface-confined radical chemistry remains limited. Here, we demonstrate that nonplanar hydrocarbons such as helicenes undergo highl

Real-space imaging of a phenyl group migration reaction on metal surfaces.

The explorations to extend present chemical synthetic methods are of great importance to simplify synthetic routes of chemical species. Additionally, understanding the chemical reaction mechanisms is critical to achieve controllable synthesis for applications. Here, we report the on-surface visualization and identification of a phenyl group migration reaction of 1,4-dimethyl-2,3,5,6-tetraphenyl benzene (DMTPB) precursor on Au(111), Cu(111) and Ag(110) substrates. With the combination of bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (BR-STM), noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) and densit

Adjusting the Architecture of Heptagonal Metallo-Macrocycles by Embedding Metal Nodes into the Backbone.

Coordination-driven self-assembly has been extensively employed for the bottom-up construction of discrete metallo-macrocycles. However, the prevalent use of benzene rings as the backbone limits the formation of large metallo-macrocycles with more than six edges. Herein, by embedding metal nodes into the ligand backbone, we successfully regulated the ligand arm angle and assembled two giant heptagonal metallo-macrocycles with precise control. The angle between two arms at position 4 of the central terpyridine (tpy) extended after complexation with metal ions, leading to ring expansion of the m

Exfoliation of Few-Layer Graphene in Volatile Solvents Using Aromatic Perylene Diimide Derivatives as Surfactants.

Commercial, aromatic perylene diimide (PDI) dyes were used to exfoliate few-layer graphene nanosheets in low-boiling organic solvents such as chloroform and tetrahydrofuran. Importantly, in such solvents, graphene cannot be exfoliated in the absence of the aromatic perylene diimide (PDI) dyes. The PDIs are physisorbed onto the basal plane of the nanosheet surface, which stabilized them in solution; the aromatic core lies flat on graphene and the PDI side groups influenced the physisorption strength and molecular packing. Upon varying just a single atom in the chemical structure of the side gro

Self-Assembly of Linear Three-Ring Aromatic Thiols on Au(111).

We report on the self-assembly of linear three-ring aromatic thiols on Au(111)/mica substrates. Our study examines terphenylthiol (TPT) derivatives with distinct terminal groups -F (FTPT), -CF3 (CF3TPT) and -NO2 (NTPT) as well as a pyridinebiphenyl (PyBPT) compound. Using complementary surface science techniques─X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)─we elucidate the structural properties of the resulting self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The TPT, FTPT, CF3TPT and PyBPT molecules form densely packed SAMs with hexa

Revealing Band-Hybrid Cooper Pairs on the Surface of a Superconductor with Spin-Orbit Coupling.

Most superconductors exhibit spin-singlet pairing within a single band. In multiband systems with strong spin-orbit coupling, more exotic scenarios can emerge, including Cooper pairs between bands with distinct symmetries. Here, we present evidence of the formation of Cooper pairs between spin-nondegenerate helical surface bands in the superconductor β-Bi_{2}Pd. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals anisotropic Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) resonances induced by vanadium impurities, with long-range amplitude modulations attributed to spin-conserving Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference (BQPI). Molecular arrangements in the first monolayer of Cu-phthalocyanine on In2O3(111).

Well-ordered organic molecular layers on oxide surfaces are key for organic electronics. Using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) we probe the structures of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) on In2O3, a model for a prototypical transparent conductive oxide (TCO). These scanning-probe images allow the direct determination of the adsorption site and distortions of the molecules, which are corroborated by DFT calculations. Isolated CuPc molecules adsorb in a flat, slightly tilted geometry in three symmetry-equivalent configurations on

Synthesis of Hexabenzocoronene-Cored Graphdiyne Nanosheets through Dehydrogenative Coupling on Au(111) Surface.

Thermally-induced dehydrogenative coupling of polyphenylenes on metal surfaces is an important technique to synthesize π ${\pi }$ -conjugated carbon nanostructures with atomic precision. However, this protocol has rarely been utilized to fabricate structurally defined carbon nanosheets composed of sp- and sp2-hybridized carbon atoms. Here, we present the synthesis of butadiyne-linked hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) on Au(111) surfaces as core-expanded graphdiynes. The reaction started from hexa(4-ethylphenyl)benzene, which undergoes dehydrogenation toward hexa(4-vinylphenyl)benzene, followed by pl

Self-Assembly and Electronic States of an Electron Acceptor Molecule on a Metal Substrate.

Self-assembled monolayers and bilayers of the electron acceptor molecule tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) were investigated on Pb(100) using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at 4.5 K and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The monolayer exhibits an unusually low molecular density. In contrast, both the first and second layers in the bilayer adopt a packing density twice that of the monolayer. Our modeling reveals that Pb atoms, apparently released from step edges, stabilize the bilayer structure. The structural transition is accompanied by a pronounced change in the

Surface Characterization of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes on Gold and Silver: Exploring Distinct Crystalline Facets.

Due to its exceptional chemical and functional versatility, N-heterocyclic carbene chemistry holds great promise in replacing thiol chemistry for applications in next-generation nanoelectronics. To manipulate their chemical properties and interfacial characteristics, a wide range of substrates needs to be employed for the formation of self-assemblies. Research has, however, predominantly focused on the Au(111) substrate. Herein, a systematic approach is presented for producing long-range, densely packed self-assemblies using carbenes deposited over (111) and (100) crystalline facets of gold an

Describing chain-like assembly of ethoxygroup-functionalized organic molecules on Au(111) using high-throughput simulations.

Due to the low corrugation of the Au(111) surface, 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)-2,5-bis(ethoxy)benzene (PEEB) molecules can form quasi interlocked lateral patterns, which are observed in scanning tunneling microscopy experiments at low temperatures. We demonstrate a multi-dimensional clustering approach to quantify the anisotropic pair-wise interaction of molecules and explain these patterns. We perform high-throughput calculations to evaluate an energy function, which incorporates the adsorption energy of single PEEB molecules on the metal surface and the intermolecular interaction energy of a pair

Supramolecular chiral host-guest nanoarchitecture induced by the selective assembly of barbituric acid derivative enantiomers.

Barbituric acid derivatives are prochiral molecules, i.e. they are chiral upon adsorption on surfaces. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals that barbituric acid derivatives self-assemble into a chiral guest-host supramolecular architecture at the solid-liquid interface on graphite. The host nanoarchitecture has a sophisticated wavy shape pattern and paired guest molecules are nested insides the cavities of the host structure. Each unit cell of the host structure is composed of both enantiomers with a ratio of 1:1. Furthermore, the wavy patterns of the nanoarchitecture are formed from alternat

Local structure relaxation, quantum trap depression, and valence charge polarization induced by the shorter-and-stronger bonds between under-coordinated atoms in gold nanostructures.

Relativistic density functional theory calculations have been conducted to examine the effect of atomic under-coordination on the crystal structure, binding energy, and electron configuration of cuboctahedral and Marks decahedral gold clusters. Trend consistency between calculations and experimental observations confirmed the predictions made using BOLS correlation theory, suggesting that the shorter-and-stronger bonds between under-coordinated atoms induce local structure relaxation, potential well depression, and the associated local charge and energy densification, as well as the polarizati

Spin Filtering on Demand via Localized States in an Atomic-Scale Resonant Tunneling Magnetic Tunnel Junction.

Spin filtering and its back-action spin-transfer torque (STT) are key ingredients of the latest spintronic devices based on magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). Resonant tunneling (RT), implemented by design or occurring as parasitic effects, is known to crucially affect macroscopic device performance, but direct experimental access to its individual microscopic processes has remained difficult. Here, we apply the RT scheme from MTJs to spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) for ultimate miniaturization obtained by addressing distinct sites on individual nanomagnets. Combined with

Giant Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Few-Layer α-RuCl3 Tunnel Junctions.

The spin-orbit-assisted Mott insulator α-RuCl3 is proximate to the coveted quantum spin liquid (QSL) predicted by the Kitaev model. In the search for the pure Kitaev QSL, reducing the dimensionality of this frustrated magnet by exfoliation has been proposed as a way to enhance magnetic fluctuations and Kitaev interactions. Here, we perform angle-dependent tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) measurements on ultrathin α-RuCl3 crystals with various layer numbers to probe their magnetic, electronic, and crystal structures. We observe a giant change in resistance, as large as ∼2500%, when the magneti

Confined Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism in Kagome (Fe3Sn2/CoSn) Superlattices.

We reveal the presence of robust ferromagnetism in topological kagome (Fe3Sn2/CoSn)×n superlattices via polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) and magnetization measurements. Using molecular beam epitaxy, we have synthesized superlattices of alternating ferromagnetic Fe3Sn2 and paramagnetic CoSn layers, the interfacial integrity of which is confirmed using scanning transmission electron microscopy. Magnetization depth profiles, obtained by fitting the PNR data, confirm the presence of ferromagnetism in the confined Fe3Sn2 layers at room temperature, with minimal thickness dependence down to 2 nm

Temperature-Dependent Stepwise Dissociation of Methanol on Co(0001).

An atomic-level understanding of the elementary steps of catalytic reactions is crucial for a more molecularly driven catalyst design. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of temperature-dependent stepwise decomposition of methanol on a single-crystal Co(0001) surface using a series of surface science techniques and density functional theory calculation. Visualization of surface products was realized by scanning tunneling microscopy. The first step of methanol dissociation is cleavage of the OH bond to the methoxy group and H atom, showing clover-like and honeycomb structures, respectively
