Poly(ester amide) blend microspheres for oral insulin delivery.

This study developed a novel oral insulin formulation centered on microspheres consisting of a blend of biodegradable poly(ester amide) (PEA). In the formulation, L-lysine-/L-leucine-based PEA with pendant COOH groups (PEA-COOH) was used as a pH-responsive material for the protection of insulin from the harsh environmental conditions of the stomach. Arginine-based PEA (Arg-PEA) was introduced to improve the intestinal absorption of the drug. The influence of both the hydrophobicity of PEA-COOH and the content of Arg-PEA was investigated in detail on microsphere surface morphology, drug loading

Gold-decorated block copolymer microspheres with controlled surface nanostructures.

Gold-decorated block copolymer microspheres (BCP-microspheres) displaying various surface morphologies were prepared by the infiltration of Au precursors into polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) microspheres. The microspheres were fabricated by emulsifying the PS-b-P4VP polymers in chloroform into a surfactant solution in water, followed by the evaporation of chloroform. The selective swelling of the P4VP domains in the microspheres by the Au precursor under acidic conditions resulted in the formation of Au-decorated BCP-microspheres with various surface nanostructures. As evidence

Respirable rifampicin-based microspheres containing isoniazid for tuberculosis treatment.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop small microspheres for delivering antimycobacterial drugs to infected host macrophages. Rifampicin-based microparticles were prepared. The drug was covalently linked to acrylic moieties to obtain a polymerizable derivative for the preparation of materials useful as drug delivery systems that then were loaded with isoniazid acting in synergy with rifampicin. Their antitubercular activity was determined in vitro. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed hydrogel structure. Morphological analysis showed microparticles with spherical shape

Treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma by radioembolization using 90Y microspheres.

The use of external beam radiation therapy for primary treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been limited by the low radiation tolerance of the non-tumoral liver. However, technical advances allowing partial liver volume external irradiation have resulted in consistently high response rates. Internal radiation therapy, also called (90)Y radioembolization ((90)Y-RE), consists in delivering implantable microspheres labeled with (90)Y into the arteries that feed liver tumors in order to provide a high dose of radiation to tumor nodules irrespective of their number, size and location, wh

Surface properties of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts and surrogate microspheres.

The physical properties that govern the waterborne transmission of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts from land to sea were evaluated and compared to the properties of carboxylated microspheres, which could serve as surrogates for T. gondii oocysts in transport and water treatment studies. The electrophoretic mobilities of T. gondii oocysts, lightly carboxylated Dragon Green microspheres, and heavily carboxylated Glacial Blue microspheres were determined in ultrapure water, artificial freshwater with and without dissolved organic carbon, artificial estuarine water, and artificial seawater. Clinical applications of azithromycin microspheres in respiratory tract infections.

Few adequately designed clinical trials have addressed optimal treatment duration in lower respiratory tract infections. Drugs possessing favourable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles may obtain early bacterial eradication allowing shorter treatment duration. This may be associated with a number of advantages including reduced resistance induction, increased compliance, lesser adverse events, and cost containment. Recently, a novel 2.0 g single dose of azithromycin microspheres has been compared with 7-day levofloxacin 500 mg or extended release clarithromycin in over 400 patients wi

Yttrium-90 microspheres: radiation therapy for unresectable liver cancer.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) constitutes a difficult health challenge because of its poor prognosis and limited treatment options. Most available therapies are used only for palliation. The use of yttrium-90 microspheres is a new intraarterial therapy consisting of beta-irradiating microspheres measuring 20-30 micro m in diameter that can be delivered directly to the tumors. (90)Y microspheres, which carry the radiation, are selectively taken up by the tumors, thus preserving normal liver. In several studies to date, (90)Y microspheres have proved to have a low toxicity profile and have gene

Development of oral drug delivery system using floating microspheres.

Floating acrylic resin microspheres with an internal hollow structure were prepared by a solvent diffusion and evaporation method. The yield of microspheres depended on the diffusion rate of ethanol and/or isopropanol in the organic phase. They were successfully produced when a mixture of ethanol and isopropanol was used instead of ethanol alone. The mixing ratio of components in the organic phase affected the size and the yield of microspheres and the best results were obtained at the volume ratio of ethanol:isopropanol:dichloromethane (8:2:5). Direct introduction of the organic phase into th

Regional cerebral blood flow in pigs estimated by microspheres.

Regional cerebral blood flow in anaesthetized pigs is determined with the microsphere method. Five regions of cortical grey matter and three white subcortical areas in each hemisphere are examined together with anatomically classic structures. The validity of the biopsies was confirmed by freeze drying of the tissue. Three flow measurements in a group of six animals showed large interindividual variations whereas regions with the same structure in the particular animal showed a high degree of uniformity. Symmetrical regions in the two hemispheres were similar with a coefficient of variation be

3D MOF Photonic Microspheres for Thiram SERS Fingerprint Detection.

The persistent migration of pesticides into aquatic ecosystems poses severe risks to environmental and public health. Monitoring pesticide residues along these migration pathways is therefore critical. Herein, we report the first application of a three-dimensional (3D) photonic microsphere surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate (ZIF-8 PCMs-NH2@AuNPs) for the targeted adsorption and trace detection of the pesticide thiram. Synthesized via microfluidics, these hierarchically porous metal-organic framework microspheres overcome the poor reproducibility of conventional substrates by

Hollow InVO4 Microspheres toward Promoting Photocatalytic CO2 Conversion Performance.

The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into valuable chemical fuels represents a promising approach to addressing global energy demands and climate change. In this study, InVO4-based catalysts were synthesized, and their CO2 reduction performance was evaluated in a solid-gas phase system. The InVO4 hollow microspheres demonstrated significantly higher average production rates of CO and CH4 compared to the InVO4 solid microsphere and InVO4 SSR. The superior activity stems from the hollow structure, which enhances CO2 adsorption and light harvesting via internal scattering. Its shell of tightly pac

Enhancing Anticancer Efficacy of Formononetin Microspheres via Microfluidic Fabrication.

Formononetin is a flavonoid compound with anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its low solubility limits its clinical use. We employed microfluidic technology to prepare formononetin-loaded PLGA-PEGDA microspheres (Degradable polymer PLGA, Crosslinking agent PEGDA), which can encapsulate and release drugs in a controlled manner. We optimized and characterized the microspheres, and evaluated their antitumor effects. The microspheres had uniform size, high drug loading efficiency, high encapsulation efficiency, and stable release for 35 days. They also inhibited the proliferatio

Adhesive and Injectable Hydrogel Microspheres for Inner Ear Treatment.

The least damaging and most economical method to deliver drugs or carriers into the inner ear for treatment of disease is through the middle ear. However, the retention of drug in the middle ear is an obstacle. Here, inspired by the adhesion of mussels, a methacrylate gelatin microspheres (GM) coupling polydopamine (PDA) layer (GM@PDA) with excellent adhesive ability is constructed, and Ebselen liposomes are further loaded into the GM@PDA (GM@PDA@Lipo-Ebselen). The loading capacity of GM@PDA for Ebselen liposomes is 25 ± 1 µg mg-1 microspheres. GM@PDA@Lipo-Ebselen could be injected on round wi

Formaldehyde-Controlled Synthesis of Multishelled Hollow Mesoporous SiO2 Microspheres.

We developed a facile one-pot method to synthesize multishelled hollow mesoporous SiO2 microspheres (HMSs) with controllable interior structures including one-shell, double-shell, and yolk-shell. Single reagent formaldehyde could fully control the morphology of HMSs, in that formaldehyde was crucial to the SiO2 precursor's hydrolysis rate and the template pore size.

Basic fibroblast growth factor eluting microspheres enhance distraction enterogenesis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if distraction enterogenesis using self-expanding polycaprolactone (PCL) springs is a potential therapy for short bowel syndrome. Sustained release basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) microspheres have been shown to induce angiogenesis and intestinal regeneration in tissue engineered scaffolds. We hypothesized that the provision of bFGF-loaded microspheres would increase angiogenesis and thereby enhance the process of enterogenesis. METHODS: A 10-mm segment of rodent jejunum was isolated and an encapsulated PCL spring inserted. Blank or bF
