Madarosis, defined as partial or total loss of eyelashes, is an unusual symptom that can reveal a variety of underlying conditions. We report a rare case of unilateral madarosis associated with blepharitis caused by Microsporum audouinii, a dermatophyte responsible for ringworms. An eight-year-old boy presented with ocular pruritus with erythematous squamous lesions of the right eyelid evolving for four days. An initial diagnosis of eczematous blepharitis was made, and symptomatic treatment was initiated. However, the evolution was unfavorable, marked by the appearance of madarosis. The patien

Dermatophyte infections globally account for 20 to 25% of fungal infections. Dermatophytes have begun exhibiting antifungal drug resistance, making it challenging to treat this particular infection. Essential oils could be used as alternative solutions as they have been used for a long period to treat different infections. The research has demonstrated the antifungal efficacy of cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, tea tree, thyme, and garlic essential oils, and the impact of their combinations was assayed against Microsporum canis, Trichophyton tonsurans, T. violaceum, T. verrucosum, and Epidermophyt

Human and animal dermatophytoses are most commonly treated with systemic antifungal drugs such as itraconazole (ITZ) and terbinafine (TRF). The antifungal susceptibility of Nannizia fulva, however, remains poorly documented. In the present study, we investigated the in vitro susceptibility of N. fulva to ITZ and TRF using the CLSI M38-A2 test. The mean MICs for the 12 tested strains were 0.6542 mg/L (range: 0.0625-1 mg/L) for ITZ and 0.15625 mg/L (range: <0.003125-0.5 mg/L) for TRF. These results indicate that ITZ and TRF at standard veterinary doses should be efficacious against N. fulva.

INTRODUCTION: Tinea corporis (B35.6) caused by Microsporum canis which is fungal species that causes numerous forms of disease. It is part of a group of fungi known as Dermatophytes. Though mostly well known for ringworm in pets, it is also known to infect humans. This fact makes this pathogen both anthrophilic and zoophilic in nature. Microsporum canis is a communicable pathogen.
CASE REPORT: We will report about a case, 22-year-old female, residing in a village, with typical changes of a mycotic infection caused by M. Canis. Dermatological description can be summarized with polymorphic eryt

A 29-year-old renal transplant patient taking mycophenolate mofetil 1 g b.i.d., cyclosporine 100 mg b.i.d. and prednisone 10 mg q.d. presented with white paint, dot-like incrustations on the skin of his right scrotum. A 10% potassium hydroxide preparation of scrapings from the lesions showed septate hyphae and Microsporum gypseum was cultured. Topical bifonazole 1% cream cleared the lesions within 2 weeks. At the 2-month follow up there was no relapse.

BACKGROUND: Microsporum audouinii has resurged recently. Infections with the dermatophyte are difficult to treat, which raises the question if we treat M. audouinii infections with the most effective antifungal (AF) agent.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study was to investigate an outbreak of tinea capitis (TC) in Denmark, address the challenges in outbreak management and to conduct two reviews regarding previous outbreaks and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC).
METHODS: We used Wood's light, culture, direct microscopy, and PCR for screening and antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) for

Two pediatric cases of Microsporum canis infection that occurred in a cat breeder family and the isolation of dermatophytes from their 166 breeding cats are reported. The patients were a 16-month-old girl and her 26-month-old sister who both had tinea capitis. Their family consisted of six members: the sisters, their great-grandmother, grandmother, grandfather, and mother. Except for the two sisters, the family had no history of skin lesions. The grandmother had been a cat breeder for 20 years. We tested the cats using the hairbrush technique, and 56 of the 158 cats (35%) tested were positive

The enzymatic and antifungal profiles of dermatophytes play an important role in causing infections in humans and animals. This study aimed to assess the virulence factors produced by Microsporum canis strains, in vitro antifungal profile and the relationship between virulence, antifungal profile and occurrence of lesions in animals and humans. A total of 100 M. canis strains from humans with tinea corporis (n = 10) and from animals presenting (n = 64) or not (n = 26) skin lesions was employed to evaluate phospholipase (Pz), hemolytic (Hz), lipase (Lz), catalase (Ca), and thermotolerance (GI)

Dermatophytoses account for nearly a quarter of all fungal infections worldwide. These difficult to treat infections of the skin, hair, and nails, are growing more resistant to conventional antifungal treatments, and when treatable, often require prolonged therapeutic regimens. For centuries, essential oils have been used to treat a variety of ailments. In this study, we evaluated the clinical effects in vitro of 65 essential oils and 21 essential oil blends against various clinical species/strains of dermatophytes from two primary genera, Microsporum and Trichophyton. Our aim: To determine th

BACKGROUND: Microsporum (M.) canis, whose source of infection is mostly cats, is still considered as the most frequently occurring zoophilic dermatophyte in Germany and Europe. In distinct areas of Germany, the zoophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton (T.) anamorph of Arthroderma (A.) benhamiae also presents a frequent and emerging causative agent of dermatophytoses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over a period of 3 years, from March 2010 to March 2013, skin samples from scalp, face, trunk, and limbs were investigated using mycological cultivation and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for dermatophytes.

Misidentifying with Microsporum gypseum has for a long time been accounted for less prevalence of the geophilic species, Microsporum fulvum in human dermatophytosis. We describe a new case of infection with the species in an Iranian young man. Direct examination of skin scrapings revealed a tinea corporis, and morphological study of the recovered isolate from the culture resulted in the identification of M. gypseum. However, PCR amplification of ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 region and subsequent ITS-RFLP and sequencing were indicative of M. fulvum as the true causative agent. To recognize M. fulvum in

BACKGROUND: Pediatric alopecia is increasingly common, influenced by conditions like alopecia areata and infections such as tinea capitis, primarily caused by Microsporum canis. Diagnosing tinea capitis in primary care is challenging due to limited access to advanced tools, leading to treatment delays.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the effectiveness of Wood's lamp for early diagnosis of tinea capitis and its role in distinguishing it from other pediatric alopecia types.
METHODS: Fifty pediatric patients under 12 with alopecia were enrolled from March 2023 to March 2024. Data collected inc

Tinea capitis, primarily caused by dermatophytes such as Trichophyton and Microsporum species, is a superficial fungal infection affecting the scalp and hair, commonly observed in prepubertal children but rare in adults. Here we report a unique case of an adult female with tinea capitis presenting as diffused alopecia and erythema inflammation on the scalp's apex, mimicking seborrheic dermatitis. Examination of the hair and scalp using fluorescence microscopy and fungal culture identified the presence of hyphae from Malassezia globosa, Malassezia furfur and Microsporum canis. The patient under

A 9-year-old girl presented a large inflammatory cup-shaped scalp lesion with alopecia surrounded by pustules, dander, and suppuration associated with an occipital inflammatory lymphadenopathy for 1 month. Wood's light exam was positive as well as KOH mount showing ectothrix type hair involvement. Hair and pus culture on Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) added with chloramphenicol and supplemented with cycloheximide isolated a dermatophyte species identified as Microsporum audouinii according to the colonies features. Species identification was confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionizat
