Mn-doped MOF nanoparticles mitigating hypoxia via in-situ substitution strategy for dual-imaging guided combination treatment of microwave dynamic therapy and chemotherapy.

Microwave dynamic therapy (MWDT) destroy tumor cells using reactive oxygen species (ROS), but its effectiveness is limited by low ROS production and intracellular oxygen (O2) availability. This study presents a novel strategy using manganese (II) ion (Mn2+) doped iron (Fe)-based metal-organic framework (Fe MOF) nanoparticles (NPs) to enhance both O2 generation and ROS production for improved MWDT. Incorporating Mn2+ into Fe MOF narrows the bandgap from 0.673 eV to 0.429 eV, improving the separation of electronic-hole pair and increasing ROS yield. Meanwhile, Mn-porphyrin nanocomplexes facilita

Assessing effects of microwave electromagnetic field in APP/PS1 mice by in vivo GABA-weighted imaging via variable delay multipulse-chemical exchange saturation transfer MRI.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) have been shown to be beneficial in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. It has been proposed that EMF promotes GABAergic neurogenesis and that abnormal GABA levels are an important influence on the progression of AD. To achieve in vivo GABA-weighted imaging in the brain in APP/PS1 mice, we utilized variable delay multi-pulse (VDMP)-chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST)- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and pathological validation to measure GABA levels in APP/PS1 mice under microwave EMF and ex

The first experience of ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation for extracranial schwannoma of the cervical vagus nerve in carotid space and treatment response evaluation with contrast-enhanced imaging: A case report.

Schwannoma is a benign tumor that originates from Schwann cells in the nerve sheathing of cranial, other peripheral, or autonomic nerves. Patients often present with painless mass as the chief complaint. The main symptoms of this tumor are related to its size and specific nerve origin. At present, the pretreatment diagnosis is mainly made by ultrasound, CT, MR, or biopsy, and the main treatment is surgical resection. We reported a new treatment method for cervical schwannoma in a 65-year-old woman with a history of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). When the patient's neck mass was initially

Improved Anomaly Characterization in Biological Tissues Through Relative Permittivity Estimation.

Microwave imaging for biomedical applications still suffers from imprecise reconstruction of the relative permittivity (εr) of tissues. Most of the traditional methods employing qualitative measures find it difficult to simultaneously estimate the location and size of the anomaly. This work presents a novel two step approach for improving the detection (location and dimension) of anomaly in biological tissues in microwave imaging. In the proposed two step approach, the electrical distance (Dmeas) of the antenna from the biological phantom is determined and the effective relative permittivity (

Imaging cell phone radiation in tissue mimics with hyperpolarized low-field MRI.

Radiation from cell phones and cellular devices is ubiquitous and, in the microwave frequency bands used, human tissue is a highly absorbing complex electromagnetic material. Safety guidelines are currently based on heating and specific absorption rate using limited measurement and modeling techniques. Here, we present a method to image microwave electromagnetic fields from cellular device radiation in tissue mimics using hyperpolarized low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Resonant absorption of microwave radiation in free radicals added to the tissue mimics, transfers polarization to t

Machine Learning Classification of Axillary Lymph Nodes Using Microwave Signals.

Axillary Lymph Nodes (ALNs) can be affected by breast cancer, and the number of affected ALNs is a determinant factor in breast cancer staging. Microwave imaging (MWI) has emerged as a promising technique for ALN assessment, addressing limitations in conventional imaging modalities. This study investigates, for the first time, the classification of ALNs and axillary regions from microwave signals, without image reconstruction. Classification is performed considering realistic morphological characteristics of ALNs reported in the literature and is based solely on geometric differences, which di

Microwave-Responsive MnFe-Based Molybdenum Disulfide Nanoflowers for Enhanced Thermal-Dynamic-Chemo Synergistic Therapy in Bladder Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The most challenging clinical characteristic of bladder cancer (BC) is its exceptionally high recurrence rate. Recurrence, metastasis and drug resistance remain critical challenges in BC treatment. Microwave dynamic therapy (MWDT) is an emerging antitumor modality; however, its therapeutic efficacy is limited by the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME). To address these limitations, we developed a multifunctional nanoplatform (Mn-Fe-Dox-BSA-MoS2) to enhance oxygenation and therapeutic efficiency. In this system, MoS2 served as a microwave sensitizer and photoacoustic imaging (PAI)

Novel Microwave Torso Scanner for Thoracic Fluid Accumulation Diagnosis and Monitoring.

Thoracic fluid accumulation is one of the significant and early-stage manifestations of fatal diseases, such as lung-cancer, liver-failure and congestive heart-failure. Currently, computational-tomography (CT)-Scan is the most widely used tool for the detection of thoracic fluid. Yet, it is unable to detect small amounts of fluid, has ionizing radiation and lacks mobility. On the other hand, microwave imaging systems have emerged as an accurate and portable complementary diagnostic tool. However, there is a lack of a complete clinical platform that can fulfill the requirements of accurate and

Metamaterial-enhanced MIMO antenna array system for non-invasive cerebral hemorrhage assessment in elderly and disabled patients.

Microwave imaging (MWI) presents a promising, safer, more affordable, and portable alternative for detecting strokes compared to traditional methods, such as CT and MRI, which have limitations related to radiation exposure, cost, and accessibility. This paper focuses on the design and performance evaluation of a compact, T-shaped, two-port Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna, developed explicitly for microwave-based brain imaging. MWI operates by exploiting differences in tissue dielectric properties to identify and visualize abnormalities, with ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas configur

Design and Implementation of an Ultra-Wideband Water Immersion Antenna for Underwater Ultrasonic Sensing in Microwave-Induced Thermoacoustic Tomography.

Microwave-induced thermoacoustic tomography (MITAT) holds significant promise in biomedical applications. It creates images using ultrasonic sensors to detect thermoacoustic signals induced by microwaves. The key to generating thermoacoustic signals that accurately reflect the fact is to achieve sufficient and uniform microwave power absorption of the testing target, which is closely tied to the microwave illumination provided by the antenna. In this article, we introduce a novel design and implementation of an ultra-wideband water immersion antenna for an MITAT system. We analyze and compare
