Microwave-Assisted Depolymerization of Polymethacrylates.

Advancing sustainability in the polymer industry requires efficient, ecofriendly recycling strategies. This study introduces a catalyst-free, microwave-assisted depolymerization method for RAFT-terminated polymethacrylates, utilizing methanol as a dual-functional cosolvent to enhance microwave absorption and provide a benign reaction medium. The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated primarily with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), including variations in molecular weight (Mn ≈ 5k, 12k, 17k g/mol) and RAFT end-groups (dithiobenzoate and trithiocarbonate). Applicability was further con

Microwave Treatment of Cold Injuries.

In spite of the fact that extremity frostbites are a widespread type of injuries in many countries, specialized equipment for frostbite treatment is lacking. Treatment is carried out by conservative methods. The best results are obtained by using thermal isolation of injured tissues and activation of internal warming. It is proposed to initiate deep warming of frostbitten extremities on exposure to low-power microwave radiation. A microwave chamber has been developed to implement this technique. The efficiency of the approach was earlier demonstrated on animals. An example is given of successf

Microwave coagulation for liver metastases.

BACKGROUND: Primary liver cancer and liver metastases from colorectal carcinoma are the two most common malignant tumours to affect the liver. The liver is second only to the lymph nodes as the most common site for metastatic disease. More than half of patients with metastatic liver disease will die from metastatic complications. Microwave coagulation involves placing an electrode into a lesion under ultrasound or computed tomography guidance. The microwave coagulator generates and transmits microwave energy to the electrode. Coagulative necrosis causes cellular death and destroys tissue in th

Exploding microwaved eggs--revisited.

Different types of injuries are described as caused by the use of microwave ovens. Four of 41 burns from microwave ovens, presented by an international survey in 1986, were due to exploding microwave-heated eggs. Careful review of the English language literature through a Medline search from 1966 to 2000 was performed, in search of burns caused by exploding eggs. Clinical information from the published articles was reviewed and missing information was completed by e-mail correspondence with authors. Our own case was added to the collected data, and a total of 13 cases were analyzed. The averag

Microwave absorption spectroscopy of DNA.

By utilizing a novel approach to microwave spectrometry, we have measured the absolute absorption spectrum of plasmid DNA (pUC8.c2), in buffered aqueous solution, from 5 to 20 GHz. Our technique does not suffer from the same experimental difficulties that plague other methods. We observe no absorption resonances in this frequency range, but we do see broadband differences, between DNA and pure buffer, that are attributable to changes in the ionic conductivity of the solutions. These results constitute the first verification, by a totally different technique, of the absence of resonances in the

Evaluation of microwave hyperthermia applicators.

Hyperthermia has been used in conjunction with radiation and chemotherapy for cancer treatment. When using electromagnetic heating, applicators are critical components in contact with or in proximity to patients and can be the determining factor for effective and safe treatment. Tissue absorption of electromagnetic energy is determined by many factors. Three cases are shown to illustrate the complexity of microwave heating: 1) The BSD MA-151 applicator has good center heating on a muscle-only phantom as shown in the operation manual. When fat slabs of 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 cm thick were added, t

In the experiment, frostbite of the hind legs in rabbits was induced for 3 hours. The extremities of 12 animals of the experimental group were influenced with UHF-field with a wavelength of 12.6 cm of nonthermal intensity (3 W) for 10 minutes one time after termination of cold influence. The extremities of 18 rabbits of the control group were warmed in a natural way. The milder course of cold trauma in animals of the experimental group manifesting itself in higher temperature of a skin of the damaged extremity, more rapid disappearance of edema and lesser spreading of cyanosis, tissue necrosis

Microwave hyperthermia for brain tumors.

Twelve patients with malignant brain tumors who had failed to respond to conventional therapies were treated with thermotherapy. Hyperthermic temperatures (approximately 43 degrees C) were induced in the tumors using microwaves at a frequency of 2450 MHz that were guided into the tumors by one or more semirigid coaxial applicators. These applicators fit into 16 gauge tubes or needles and can be inserted into the brain with minimal damage to healthy tissues. During each treatment, the tumors were maintained at hyperthermic temperatures for 1 hour. Several treatments spaced a few days apart were

Engineering Microwave-Activatable Nanoenergic Converters with Energy Cascade Structures for On-Demand Microwave Dynamic Therapy.

Microwave dynamic therapy (MDT) has emerged as a promising therapy for cancer treatment. However, its therapeutic efficacy is constrained by limited microwave (MW) energy density and suboptimal MW absorption capacity of conventional MW sensitizers. To address these challenges, we engineer Ti3C2@CoFeMOF@CaO2 nanoenergic converters (MMC-NCs) to augment reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Through enhancement of dielectric loss, the MW absorption capacity of MMC-NCs is promoted. Importantly, MMC-NCs overcome intrinsic MW energy limitations via a coupled energy cascade strategy. Under MW irra

Microwave surgical treatment of the prostate: clinical application of microwave surgery as a tool for improved prostatic electroresection.

Microwave surgery as a tool for improved prostatic electroresection is introduced. Prior to electroresection the prostate was coagulated with 2,450 MHz of microwave which was emitted from the bipolar electrode of a specially designed probe. We conducted a comparative study of 35 patients with bladder neck obstruction. There was a microwave coagulation group treated with subsequent transurethral resection (TUR) and a conventional TUR group. Both groups were analyzed for the amount of blood loss, irrigant absorption and the frequency of complications. Both during and following surgery, the forme

Combinatorial and automated synthesis of phosphodiester galactosyl cluster on solid support by click chemistry assisted by microwaves.

Small libraries of di-, tri-, and tetragalactosyl clusters were efficiently synthesized using combinatorial methodology, on solid support, by click chemistry assisted by microwaves, starting from different poly alkyne DNA-based scaffolds and two galactosyl azide derivatives. The scaffold was synthesized by standard DNA solid-supported phosphoramidite chemistry using a novel alkyne phosphoramidite and an alkyne solid support. The proportion of each glycocluster in a library was modulated using different molar ratios of both galactose azides.

Ablation of cells in mice using antibody-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Ab-MWCNTs) in combination with microwaves.

This is a proof-of-principle study on the combination of microwaves and multiwalled carbon nanotubes to induce in vivo, localized hyperthermic ablation of cells as a potential methodology for the treatment of localized tumors. Compared to conventional methods, the proposed approach can create higher temperatures in a rapid and localized fashion, under low radiation levels, eliminating some of the unwanted side effects. Following successful ablation of cancer cells in cell culture and zebrafish tumor-xenograft models, it is hypothesized that a cancer treatment can be developed using safe microw

Combined Transarterial Chemoembolization with Microwave Ablation versus Microwave Alone for Treatment of Medium Sized Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The only definitive treatment for both HCC and cirrhosis is liver transplantation, but long wait times in some regions and a relatively fixed number of donor organs negatively impact access to liver transplantation. The aim of the work was to evaluate and compare the short outcome of patients with medium-sized HCC who will undergo percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) alone and in combination with TACE. METHODS: This prospective study included 40 patients wi

Magnetic Bimetallic Heterointerface Nanomissiles with Enhanced Microwave Absorption for Microwave Thermal/Dynamics Therapy of Breast Cancer.

Microwave thermotherapy (MWT) has shown great potential in cancer treatment due to its deep tissue penetration and minimally invasive nature. However, the poor microwave absorption (MA) properties of the microwave thermal sensitizer in the medical frequency band significantly limit the thermal effect of MWT and then weaken the therapeutic efficacy. In this paper, a Ni-based multilayer heterointerface nanomissile of MOFs-Ni-Ru@COFs (MNRC) with improved MA performance in the desired frequency band via introducing magnetic loss and dielectric loss is developed for MWT-based treatment. The loading

A Simple Microwave Imaging System for Food Product Inspection through a Symmetry-Based Microwave Imaging Approach.

In the food industry, there is a growing demand for cost-effective methods for the inline inspection of food items able to non-invasively detect small foreign bodies that may have contaminated the product during the production process. Microwave imaging may be a valid alternative to the existing technologies, thanks to its inherently low-cost and its capability of sensing low-density contaminants. In this paper, a simple microwave imaging system specifically designed to enable the inspection of a large variety of food products is presented. The system consists of two circularly loaded antipoda

Microwaves increase the effectiveness of systemic antibiotic treatment in acute bone infection: experimental study in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis is a challenge for orthopedic surgeons due to its protracted treatment process. Microwaves (MWs) can increase blood perfusion due to their thermal effect. Furthermore, MWs demonstrated significant bactericidal effects in vitro. In the present study, we assumed that the application of a 2450-MHz-frequency MW together with systemic antibiotic treatment would provide synergy for the treatment of acute osteomyelitis. METHODS: The medullary cavity of the right tibia was inoculated with 107 CFU of methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA-ATCC 29213) in 40 rats, an
