Association of Tinnitus and Other Cochlear Disorders With a History of Migraines.

IMPORTANCE: A headache is a symptom of a migraine, but not all patients with migraine have headaches. It is still unclear whether a migraine might increase the risk of cochlear disorders, even though a migraine does not occur concurrently with cochlear disorders. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of cochlear disorders for patients with a history of migraines. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study used claims data from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005 to identify 1056 patients with migraines diagnosed between January 1, 1996, and December 31, 2012. A total of 42

Rapid cycling as a feature of bipolar disorder and comorbid migraine.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested the clinical profile of individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) differs according to the presence or absence of comorbid migraine. We aimed to determine the clinical characteristics that differentiate individuals with BD with and without comorbid migraine in a large, representative, clinically well-characterised UK sample. METHODS: The lifetime clinical characteristics of 1488 individuals with BD (BPI n=1120, BPII n=368) with and without comorbid migraine were compared (n=375 vs. n=1113 respectively). RESULTS: Individuals with BD and comorbid migrai

Impact of comorbid migraine on the clinical course of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests an association between migraine and bipolar disorder (BD), although the impact of this association in the clinical course of BD is relatively unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare 2 groups of individuals with BD (with vs without comorbid migraine) and evaluate differences in severity of clinical course. METHODS: Three hundred thirty-nine adults with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition-defined bipolar I or II disorder were enrolled and divided into 2 groups: with and without comorbid migraine. Demographic and cli

Migraine immune cell gene targets and their relationship to psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Migraine frequently co-occurs with psychiatric disorders, yet the immunogenetic mechanisms linking these conditions remain largely unexplored. METHODS: Using cis-eQTL data from 28 immune cell subtypes (1,925 donors) and GWAS summary statistics for migraine and five psychiatric disorders, we performed single-cell transcriptome-wide Mendelian randomization, Bayesian colocalization, genetic correlation, and cross-disease pleiotropy analyses. Independent replication was performed using external datasets. RESULTS: Migraine and its subtypes showed significant positive genetic correlati

How to investigate and treat: migraine in patients with temporomandibular disorders.

Migraine and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are highly prevalent conditions that frequently coexist in the same patient. The relationship between migraine and TMD is complex. Migraineurs often have pain in the TMD area; TMD sufferers, in turn, often experience headaches in addition to the pain in the jaw. Finally, migraine and TMD are comorbid, and the final phenotype of patients with the comorbidity may represent the aggregated contribution of both. Herein we briefly discuss the clinical commonalities of migraine and TMD, and the differential diagnosis of these conditions with other causes

Temporomandibular disorders and cutaneous allodynia are associated in individuals with migraine.

The objective of this study was to estimate and contrast the occurrence of ictal and interictal cutaneous allodynia (CA) in individuals with migraine with and without temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Both TMD and CA are common in migraine and may be associated with migraine transformation from episodic into a chronic form. Herein we hypothesize that TMD contributes to the development of CA and to more severe headaches. In a clinic-based sample of individuals with episodic migraine, the presence of TMD was assessed using the research diagnostic criteria for myofascial or mixed (myofascial and

The prevalence of migraine headaches in an anxiety disorders clinic sample.

The association between migraine and psychiatric disorders has been reported in both clinical and epidemiological studies. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders has been found to be increased among individuals with migraine. Studies assessing migraine in psychiatric patients are limited and the majority of these studies have focused solely on examining patients with major depression. In the present study, we examined the prevalence and characteristics of migraine headache in an anxiety disorders clinic sample in order to better understand the relationship between these commonly associated co

Advancements in Valproate Therapy for Seizures, Migraines, and Bipolar Disorders.

Valproate, a widely utilized medication for epilepsy, mood disorders, and migraines, has attracted attention for its potential therapeutic benefits extending beyond its traditional uses. This review article compiles recent findings on the expanded utility of valproate outside of epilepsy, mood disorders, and migraines. The review acknowledges conflicting results, discusses opportunities for future research, and underlines both well-established and lesser-known adverse effects, along with possible interventions to mitigate these side effects. In addition to treating generalized and focal epilep

Mechanistic intersections between migraine and major depressive disorder.

It has long been recognized that there are comorbidities between migraine and psychiatric disorders, especially major depressive disorder (MDD). Often this relationship is attributed to the psychological risk of having an intermittent debilitating disorder that causes a great deal of suffering. However, as evidence mounts about the mechanisms underlying each disorder, mechanistic overlap is beginning to emerge that suggests some shared underlying etiology. These findings span biochemical, genetic, physiological, neuroanatomical, and environmental levels of analysis. Here we review evidence for

Migraine as an inflammatory disorder with microglial activation as a prime candidate.

BACKGROUND: The lower threshold of neuronal hyperexcitability has been correlated with migraines for decades but as technology has progressed, it has now become conceivable to learn more about the migraine disease. Apart from the "cortical spreading depression" and "activation of the trigeminovascular system", inflammation has been increasingly recognized as a possible pathogenic process that may have the possibility to regulate the disease severity. Microglial cells, the prime candidate of the innate immune cells of central nervous tissue, has been associated with numerous diseases; including

Menstrual migraine: a distinct disorder needing greater recognition.

The term menstrual migraine refers to migraine that is associated with menstruation by more than chance, but it does not define pathophysiology. Menstrual migraine affects about 20-25% of female migraineurs in the general population, and 22-70% of patients presenting to headache clinics. In women diagnosed with menstrual migraine, perimenstrual migraine attacks are associated with substantially greater disability than their non-menstrual attacks. Loose interpretation of diagnostic criteria has led to conflicting results in studies on prevalence figures, clinical characteristics, and response t

Rapid screening for generalized anxiety disorder in patients with migraine.

Background: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) often remains undiagnosed in patients with migraine, while comorbidity of GAD with migraine is associated with increased dysfunction and risk of chronic migraine. Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale 7-item (GAD-7) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale 2-item (GAD-2) are the commonly employed screening measures for generalized anxiety symptoms in different patient groups. The present study aimed to evaluate psychometric properties of the Persian version of GAD-7 and GAD-2 in migraine. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, patients were diagnosed

Comorbid Bipolar Disorder and Migraine: From Mechanisms to Treatment.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of manic/hypomanic or depressive symptoms and euthymic periods, with some patients suffering a gradual deterioration of illness and consequent cognitive deficits during the late stage. Migraine is a disease generally without abnormal medical examinations, neurological examinations or laboratory studies, and the diagnosis is made based on the retrospective demonstration of headache features and groupings of disease-associated symptoms. The epidemiology of comorbid BD and migraine is high and it is obligat
