Lyme Arthritis in a Military Dependent Child transferred from Japan.

Lyme arthritis is the most common manifestation of late Lyme disease in children. Lyme disease is known to be endemic to Japan, but is rarely diagnosed. We report the identification and successful treatment of an adolescent male with Lyme arthritis who recently relocated with his family from a US Military base in Japan to Virginia. This case highlights the importance of obtaining a travel history from military members and their families who frequently relocate due to military orders. Military medical providers must be aware of tropical and travel-related illnesses and infections that may have

Experiences of children growing up with a parent who has military-related post-traumatic stress disorder: a qualitative systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to describe the experiences of children growing up in military families with a parent who has military-related post-traumatic stress disorder. INTRODUCTION: Whether serving as a peacekeeper or warrior, military service is both physically and psychologically demanding, increasing exposures to potentially traumatic and morally injurious events and threats to personal safety. Those who have served in the military are at increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder, which includes symptoms such as emotional numbing, withdrawal, and hyperar

[Predictors of suicidality in German soldiers].

BACKGROUND: Increasing psychological distress due to out-of-area deployments is associated with a growing risk of suicidal behaviour in soldiers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 200 military psychiatric inpatients of German Armed Forces hospitals, including n=100 soldiers with and n=100 without (control group) acute suicidality prior to admission were compared concerning sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: Significant predictors of suicidal ideation were a family history of alcohol abuse and pathological scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).

Prevalence of Lyme Disease Attributable to Military Service at the USMA, West Point NY: FY2016-2018.

INTRODUCTION: Lyme disease incidence rates have steadily increased since its official recognition in 1975. Since exposure to Lyme is associated with activities conducted in and around tick-habitats including tall grass, shrubs, deciduous forest, and leaf litter, it has been suggested that service members, who are thought to spend higher amounts of time in these habitats due to training requirements, may have higher risk for exposure. Specifically, this study looks at service member and family member exposure to Ixodes scapularis, the vector for Lyme in the Northeastern and Midwestern United St

What interventions can improve social connections for military partners? A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Social connection is a key component of all people's well-being, but especially for that of military partners, who are required to navigate their lives without consistent support from their partner or extended family network. Military service can also disconnect partners from ordinary civilian life and affect their health, well-being, and employment status. Despite the understanding that social connection is a key part of promoting well-being, knowledge of how to support and drive social connectedness for this group is less well established. METHODS: This scoping review identifi

A template for building global partnerships: The Joining Forces conference goes across the Atlantic from the US to the UK.

Joining Forces is a comprehensive national initiative within the United States to mobilize all sectors of society to give service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned. This national initiative begun in April 2012 was led by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden. The Joining Forces initiative is charged with enhancing the well-being and psychological health of the military family by providing mental health care services, integrating community-based services to reduce homelessness, substance abuse for veterans and military families. This manuscript add…

Combat-injured service members and their families: the relationship of child distress and spouse-perceived family distress and disruption.

Combat injury in military service members affects both child and family functioning. This preliminary study examined the relationship of child distress postinjury to preinjury deployment-related family distress, injury severity, and family disruption postinjury. Child distress postinjury was assessed by reports from 41 spouses of combat-injured service members who had been hospitalized at two military tertiary care treatment centers. Families with high preinjury deployment-related family distress and high family disruption postinjury were more likely to report high child distress postinjury. S

Substance Abuse and Other Adverse Outcomes for Military-Connected Youth in California: Results From a Large-Scale Normative Population Survey.

IMPORTANCE: Military families and military-connected youth exhibit significant strengths; however, a sizeable proportion of these families appear to be struggling in the face of war-related stressors. Understanding the consequences of war is critical as a public health concern and because additional resources may be needed to support military families. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether rates of adverse outcomes are higher for military-connected adolescents during war compared with nonmilitary peers. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study is a secondary data analysis of a large, normativ

Integrating Families Into Veteran Care: A Call to Action for Holistic Support Systems.

The Veteran Affairs (VA) mission statement is, "To fulfill President Lincoln's promise to care for those who have served in our nation's military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors." However, the current inclusion of Veteran families, caregivers, and survivors into VA care is nuanced, limited, and inconsistent. A hallmark of modern military life is that service members who have enrolled since 2001 (called "post 9/11 Veterans") include a higher percentage of women, dual-military member households (married couples in which both members serve), and families with children. This is i

Prevalence of anxiety disorders among visitors at a military primary health center in UAE.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common. However, individuals suffering from anxiety disorders often do not seek treatment. These disorders impose a high individual and societal burden, especially on military personnel and their families, and place a significant burden on healthcare systems as care is often sought from primary care physicians rather than specialized professionals. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence and correlates of anxiety among visitors at a Military Primary Health Center. RESULTS: Anxiety disorders were high in our study population. Generalized Anxiety

Implementing trauma-focused CBT for children of veterans in the VA: Providing comprehensive services to veterans and their families.

Military families experience unique stressful circumstances such as frequent moves, service-related physical and mental health difficulties, and separation from support. Although many families exhibit high resilience in response to these stressors, military children are at an increased risk for emotional and behavioral difficulties, exposure to intimate partner violence, and child maltreatment. These potential problems not only affect child functioning, but often also negatively impact family and veteran outcomes. Although the Department of Defense has enhanced efforts to address child and fam

Operationalizing deployment history: Three approaches to examining associations with military couples' marital satisfaction.

Military life, especially deployment, introduces stressors that extend beyond the individual service member, often influencing partners and family members. The spillover-crossover model suggests that work-related stressors can spill over to affect individual well-being and cross over to intimate partners, shaping couple dynamics. However, findings on the relationship between deployment and relationship satisfaction are mixed, perhaps in part because of different ways of measuring deployment history. Using dyadic survey data from 285 U.S.-based military couples with an active-duty service membe

The Department of Defense Birth Defects Registry: overview of a new surveillance system.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is challenged with monitoring and protecting the health and wellbeing of its service members. The growing number of women on active duty and the diverse hazardous exposures associated with military service make reproductive health issues a special concern of DoD. To address this concern, the DoD Birth Defects Registry was established at the DoD Center for Deployment Health Research located at the Naval Health Research Center, San Diego, California. METHODS: The registry captures comprehensive data on healthcare utilization to calculate the prev

Assessing the Needs of Military-Connected Children and Resources to Address Those Needs.

There is a growing concern around the mental and behavioral health of children and youth as such conditions as anxiety disorders, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorders affect almost one in five children and youth ages 3 to 17. The coronavirus pandemic brought many challenges: Children missed years of in-person schooling and socialization, experienced increased social isolation, and developed an overreliance on technology and social media to stay connected, entertained, and participate in online schooling. Collectively, studies suggest that children and yout

Assessing United States Military Veterans' Fertility Intentions Before and After Military Service Using a Cognitive-Social Model.

INTRODUCTION: Military service represents a unique life transition occurring during early adulthood. Limited existing work suggests that military service delays childbearing for service members compared to civilians at a similar point in the life course and that this effect is stronger for women. The Cognitive-Social Model of Fertility Intentions posits that women form clearly defined fertility intentions when encountering situations across the life course that motivate cognitive attention toward childbearing enough that women form a conscious, actionable family-building plan. We aimed to qual

Adaptation of a Trauma-Focused Parenting Intervention for Military-Connected Mothers and Their Young Children: A Rapid Qualitative Study.

Adapting evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to be sensitive to populations who have experienced trauma has been shown to improve engagement, retention, satisfaction, and effectiveness. Compared to civilian mothers, military-connected mothers (MCM)-including service members, veterans, or their partners-face greater exposure to trauma across the life course, leading to mental health and parenting challenges. These may adversely affect their children's mental health and perpetuate generational trauma. EBIs aligned with people's life experiences and cultural backgrounds are critical to supporting

Mental health issues of women deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The number of women serving in the military and deployed to active-duty is unprecedented in the history of the United States. When women became a permanent sector of the U.S. Armed Services in 1948, their involvement was restricted to comprise only 2% of the military population; today women constitute approximately 14.5% of the 1.4 million active component and 18% of the 850,000 reserve component. Yet, little attention has been paid to the mental health needs of women military members. This review article highlights the history of women in the military and then focuses on the impact of combat
