This study examines perceptions of access to military sexual trauma-focused group therapy among veteran men with histories of military sexual trauma at a mental health clinic within the Veteran Affairs Greater Los Angeles Health Care System, a large and heterogeneous health care facility. Drawing on veteran data (n = 134) collected from January 2019 to April 2025, we used thematic qualitative analysis to examine veterans' perceptions of an MST-focused group therapy to which they had been referred. This study found that veteran men expressed varying perceptions of MST-focused group therapy that

BACKGROUND: Military sexual trauma (MST) has been linked to a range of negative mental health outcomes-posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) most notably. This article uses a causal inference framework based on the Rubin Causal Model to investigate the relationship between MST exposure and PTSD symptom severity.
METHODS: Using data from 2488 treatment-seeking veterans and service members, we reconstructed a hypothetical randomized control trial consisting of a group with MST exposure and one without. We used Student's test-statistic and estimated regression coefficients to study the isolated e

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There is limited information about prevalence of insomnia in general populations of veterans of recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. No studies have examined insomnia in veterans with military sexual trauma (MST). We assess prevalence of insomnia, identify types of services sought by veterans with insomnia, and examine correlates of insomnia in veterans with and without MST.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study of first-encounter veterans registering to establish care.
SETTING: Veteran Affairs San Diego Healthcare System.
PARTICIPANTS: Nine hundred seventeen veterans completed

BACKGROUND: Sexual satisfaction and function are vastly understudied in female service members/veterans (SM/Vs). Military sexual trauma (MST) is associated with poorer sexual satisfaction and function, but the mechanism through which MST relates to sexual satisfaction and function is unknown. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most frequent diagnoses following MST, and those with poorer sexual satisfaction and function experience higher PTSD symptoms, particularly numbing and anhedonia symptom clusters. In this study, we examined which symptom clusters (re-experiencing, avoidan

This program evaluation examines effectiveness and acceptability of an eight-session brief warrior renew treatment protocol, modified and delivered over video teleconferencing to women veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma. Due to social distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), there was a need to adapt and develop a virtual protocol for warrior renew to reach veterans who would otherwise not have access to care. Group exercises were redesigned for video, and class outlines were sent to participants over email. Pre- and postgroup assessments of th

OBJECTIVE: Researchers have recently found several links between distress intolerance (DI), the perceived inability to withstand aversive emotional and somatic states, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Despite this well-established relationship, DI has yet to be examined among victims of military sexual trauma (MST), a population known to have increased rates of PTSD. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine overall rates of DI, as well as the relationship between DI and PTSD symptom and cluster severity using an outpatient sample of MST survivors.

Military sexual trauma (MST) is associated with high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and multiple comorbid symptoms. In addition, women Veterans with MST report negative perceptions of social support, poor relationships, and difficulties in social and role functioning. Treatments for PTSD do not provide interventions to improve social or relationship functioning and do not consistently produce positive benefits regarding these outcomes. This article presents a series of case studies in which an intervention focused on building social support and relationship skills is delivered

IMPORTANCE: Military sexual trauma (MST) is associated with substantial psychiatric sequelae, but treatment options lack evidence-based protocols tailored to this specific trauma.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a MST-focused treatment using an 8-week virtual delivery format compared with an active control treatment to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial compared Warrior Renew (MST-focused group) with Health and Wellness (active control group) at baseline, week 8 (after treatment), and week 16 (foll

Military sexual trauma (MST) is prevalent and causes numerous deleterious effects on survivors. This study investigated the association between mental health counseling (MHC) and resilience among a large cohort of U.S. veterans who served in support of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Data were collected over 6.5 years (Wave 1: n = 9,566, Wave 8: n = 2,970). Female veterans who experienced sexual harassment, β = -.12, and both sexual harassment and unwanted sexual contact, β = -.21, had lower baseline resilience scores. For male v

IMPORTANCE: First-line treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), ie, trauma-focused therapy, while effective, is limited by low treatment initiation, high dropout, and high treatment refraction.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) vs first-line cognitive processing therapy (CPT) in women veterans with PTSD related to military sexual trauma (MST) and the hypothesis that PTSD outcomes would differ between the interventions.

Military sexual trauma (MST) is prevalent, and some initial evidence suggests it is associated with impaired employment outcomes. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers supported employment (SE) and Community-Based Employment Services (CBES), which consist of individualized employment support integrated with mental health treatment. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence and effect of MST on competitive employment outcomes following participation in SE or CBES. Participants were a national set of Veterans who participated in VHA SE or CBES services between 2015 and

Anxiety sensitivity (AS), the degree to which individuals fear bodily sensations associated with anxious arousal, has been implicated in the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite this well-established link, AS has yet to be examined among women who experience military sexual trauma (MST). This is particularly important as research has shown that rates of AS and PTSD are higher among females compared to males. Thus, the purpose of the current investigation was to examine the association between AS and overall PTSD symptom and cluster severity using a sampl

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between military sexual assault (MSA) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other symptoms associated with trauma, referred to as disorders of extreme stress not otherwise specified (DESNOS) or complex PTSD within a Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center outpatient mental health treatment-seeking sample. The present results focus on female Veterans only because of the low rates of endorsement of MSA among male Veterans resulting in a sample too small to use in analyses. Compared with those who did not endorse MSA, those who did rep

INTRODUCTION: Despite making up about 11% of the UK military, there remains limited investigation on the impact of adversity women experience during their service in the UK military. Military adversity can result in a range of well-being difficulties that may persist following transition out of military. The present study therefore examined the prevalence and correlates of different types of military adversity (defined as sexual harassment, sexual assault, emotional bullying and physical assault) within a community sample of UK women veterans.

History of childhood sexual assault (CSA) may result in poorer emotion regulation and interpersonal functioning, potentially affecting the tolerability and effectiveness of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Survivors of military sexual trauma (MST) have an increased incidence of CSA; however, research examining the role of CSA in EBTs for veterans with MST-related PTSD is limited. Data from 32 (9 male; 23 female) veterans with MST-related PTSD were used from a previously conducted randomized clinical trial examining the efficacy of an outpatient PTSD EB

IMPORTANCE: Military sexual trauma (MST) is associated with adverse physical and mental health outcomes following military separation. Recent research suggests that MST may be a determinant in several factors associated with postdeployment homelessness.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate MST as an independent risk factor for homelessness and to determine whether risk varies by sex.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study of US veterans who used Veterans Health Administration (VHA) services between fiscal years 2004 and 2013 was conducted using administrative data from the Departm

INTRODUCTION: Successful employment is a functional outcome of high importance for veterans after military discharge. There is a significant rising concern regarding exposure to military sexual trauma (MST) and related mental health outcomes that can impair functional outcomes, such as employment. Although resilience training is a key component of preparing for military service, to date the impact of resilience on employment outcomes for veterans with exposure to MST has yet to be examined. We sought to examine the relationship between resilience and employment in a national sample of post-9/1

Military sexual trauma (MST) is a significant public health issue associated with adverse psychiatric outcomes, including heightened risk for suicide, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorders. Recently, research has begun exploring gender-linked disparities in mental health outcomes for individuals who experience MST. The current study assessed whether women who screened positive for MST were at disproportionately higher risk for diagnoses of alcohol-use disorder (AUD) or drug-use disorder (DUD) relative to men. Veterans Health Administration (VHA) clinical data w
