Association between Antibiotic Consumption and Resistance in Mink Production.

Antibiotic consumption is considered to be a main driver of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Mink breeding follows a distinctive seasonal reproduction cycle, and all of the mink produced in the northern hemisphere are bred, born, and pelted around the same time of year. Some of the diseases are age-related, which is reflected in the seasonal variation of antibiotic consumption. The seasonality makes mink a good model for the investigation of the association between antibiotic consumption and resistance. The objectives of this study were (1) to monitor the farm level of antibiotic resistance duri

Environmental enrichment reduces signs of boredom in caged mink.

Animals housed in impoverished cages are often labelled 'bored'. They have also been called 'apathetic' or 'depressed', particularly when profoundly inactive. However, these terms are rarely operationally defined and validated. As a negative state caused by under-stimulation, boredom should increase interest in stimuli of all kinds. Apathy (lack of interest), by contrast, should manifest as decreased interest in all stimuli, while anhedonia (loss of pleasure, a depressive symptom) should specifically decrease interest in normally rewarding stimuli. We tested the hypotheses that mink, a model c

Pseudorabies virus infection in mink: a host-specific pathogenesis.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is an alphaherpesvirus that causes a neurological disease in many wild and domestic animals. The neuropathology elicited by PRV is quite consistent regardless of the host with the only exception of mink, in which it is characterized by a vasculopathy rather than by an encephalitis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the underlying pathogenic mechanism(s) of PRV infection in mink by using immunohistochemistry and laser capture microdissection (LCM) on material from naturally and experimentally infected animals. The inflammatory reaction induced by PRV was minimal or

Pathogenesis of disease caused by Aleutian mink disease parvovirus.

A review of the pathogenesis of Aleutian mink disease parvovirus (ADV) infection based on recent knowledge gained by the author and collaborators is given. The review focuses mainly on the following topics. 1) Development of an easy, sensitive and fast assay for detection of ADV antigens and antibodies directed against these antigens. A highly sensitive rocket line immunoelectrophoretic assay (RLIE) was developed. This assay turned out to be 32 times more sensitive than the counter current electrophoresis assay routinely used to detect anti-ADV antibodies in ADV eradication programs, and moreo

Cloning, expression and antiviral activity of mink alpha-interferons.

BACKGROUND: As a key link between innate and adaptive immune responses, the interferon (IFN) system is the first line of defense against viral infection. IFN, and in particular, IFN-α, has been used clinically as an effective therapeutic agent for viral infections. However, different subtypes of IFN-α demonstrate distinct antiviral activity. Therefore, it is important to identify IFN-α subtypes with high antiviral activity for the development of genetically engineered antiviral drugs. RESULTS: In this study, we cloned the genes for 13 IFN-α subtypes from peripheral blood lymphocytes of the mi

Environmentally induced limb malformations in mink frogs (Rana septentrionalis).

In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of frog deformities throughout many of the northern states of North America. The most readily noticed malformations involve the hindlimbs of peri-metamorphic animals. We have analyzed skeletal preparations of metamorphosing mink frogs (Rana septentrionalis) collected from a site in Minnesota, in order to develop a better understanding of the possible causes. In this paper we describe the categories of abnormalities found at this site. The spectrum of deformities includes missing limbs, truncated limbs, extra limbs (including extra pe

Transmission of Aleutian disease from mink with inapparent infections.

In apparent or nonprogressive Aleutian disease virus infection was considered a subclinical but persistent viral infection in which infected mink did not develop tissue lesions, hypergammaglobulinemia, or high antibody titers. Transmission of Aleutian disease virus from mink with this type of infection was measured. Mink with inapparent Aleutian disease appeared healthy and had normal gamma-globulin values, but were capable of transmitting the disease by direct and indirect horizontal contact. The risk of direct or indirect horizontal transmission from mink with inapparent infection was less t

Characteristics of inapparent Aleutian disease virus infection in mink.

Inapparent of nonprogressive Aleutian disease virus (ADV) infection is a subclinical but persistent virus infection of mink. Mink with the inapparent type of ADV infection when subjected to stress did not develop the progessive form of the disease. However, when challenged with a large dose of the virus, these mink did develop progressive Aleutian disease indicating that they were not highly resistant to the virus. Sera of mink with either the progressive of the inapparent type of ADV infection did not neutralise the virus. The anti-ADV antibody activity in mink with inapparent type of ADV inf

Isolation of Aleutian mink disease virus by affinity chromatography.

Affinity chromatography was used to isolate the Aleutian disease virus of mink. Dissociation of the immunoadsorbent-virus complex with 0.75 molar sodium chloride and then with a glycine-hydrochloride gradient released infective particles resembling picornaviruses. The elution profile suggests that two different types of virus-antibody complexes are formed, one dissociated by sodium chloride and another that requires glycine-hydrochloride in addition to sodium chloride for release of virus.

Susceptibility of mink to Clostridium botulinum type E toxin.

Experiments aiming at elucidation of the toxicity of Clostridium botulinum type E for mink are described. The observations indicate that amounts in the order of 2 x10s intraperitoneal MLD (mice) or approximately 200 MLD per g of type E toxin will kill a mink after oral administration. The symptoms observed in the animals were atypical as there was an unusually short period between administration of the toxin and the onset of symptoms and deaths of the animals. Similar results were obtained when Clostridium botulinum type E toxin was fed to Swiss mice. When mice were protected by subcutaneous i

Evolution of SARS-CoV-2 caused infection in farmed minks: continuous surveillance of an 11-month outbreak at the largest Latvian mink farm.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for the Coronavirus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, can productively infect a variety of animal hosts. The evidence suggests that both wild and farmed animal populations supporting continuous transmission present us with novel concerning genotypes of SARS-CoV-2. This is especially worrisome within large and dense populations of farmed animals, such as minks, for which spillbacks of 'mink genotypes' to the human population have been recorded on numerous occasions. In this study, we present the results of continuous c

Avian influenza virus H9N2 infections in farmed minks.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of avian H9N2 viruses throughout Asia, along with their demonstrated ability to infect mammals, puts them high on the list of influenza viruses with pandemic potential for humans. In this study, we investigated whether H9N2 viruses could infect farmed minks. METHODS: First, we conducted a serological survey for avian influenza virus antibodies on a random sample of the field-trial population of farmed minks. Then we inoculated farmed minks with A/Chicken/Hebei/4/2008 H9N2 viruses and observed the potential pathogenicity of H9N2 virus and virus shedding in infected m

[MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES OF NEUTROPHILS AND EOSINOPHILS GRANULES IN SAPPHIRE MINKS].

It has been established that sapphire minks have abnormality of subcellular structure of blood and bone marrow neutrophils and eosinophils. The abnormality consists in forming of abnormal "giant" granules. The si- ze and the number of abnormal granules significantly change during maturation of leucocytes in bone marrow. We have found differences between abnormal granules forming in neutrophils and eosinophils that depend on the maturing stage and the cells life cycle duration as well as morphofunctional features of these granulocytes.

An outbreak of toxoplasmosis in farmed mink (Mustela vison S.).

A large Wisconsin mink (Mustela vison) farm experienced an outbreak of toxoplasmosis in the spring of 1999 following an outbreak of canine distemper during the previous fall. Major clinical signs for pregnant females included reduced feed consumption, abortions, and stillborn kits; kits < or =3 weeks old experienced ataxia and mortality. Of 7,800 females, 1,976 (26%) lost their entire litter either from abortion or neonatal mortality. Kit mortality from 7 days to 3 weeks of age was 3,300, and overall kit mortality attributed to the toxoplasmosis outbreak was 10,408. Six neonatal mink kits, 12

Serum chemistry of the minke whale from the northeastern Atlantic.

Serum samples were collected from 42 harpooned minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) during commercial whaling off the coast of northern Norway (1997 and 1998) and analyzed for serum chemistry parameters in order to find clinical reference values for the northeastern Atlantic stock of this species. Mean and median values, as well as standard deviation and 90% central range, are presented for 28 different serum chemistry parameters. Lipemia is a common finding in marine mammals such as the minke whale, and chemical analysis of lipemic serum samples may produce artifacts. We found statistica

[Immunoglobulin (IgG) allotypes of the American mink with Aleutian disease].

Mink Aleutian disease (AD) is characterized by intensive proliferation of B-lymphocytes and hypergammaglobulinemia. Populational distribution of five genetic immunoglobulin markers (light chain allotype L1 and C gamma-allotypes H2, H3, H6 and H8) in minks of different coat color (Sapphire, Standard and Topaz) was studied. The groups of infected minks differed significantly from healthy ones in the distribution of the H3 allotype: the frequencies of some phenotypes--H3, H6, H8 and L1, H3, H6, H8 (Sapphire, Standard). H2, H3, H6, H8 and L1, H2, H3, H6, H8 (Sapphire) were increased significantly.

Comparison of the lesions of Aleutian disease in mink and hypergammaglobulinemia in ferrets.

Gross and microscopic lesions of Aleutian disease (AD) in mink and hypergammaglobulinemia in ferrets were compared. Both conditions were characterized by widespread proliferation of plasma cells, but proliferation was more prominent in mink infected with AD. Arteritis did not occur in hypergammaglobulinemic ferrets. Minimal or no glomerular alterations occurred in infected ferrets, but were severe in mink infected with AD. Bile duct proliferation was more prominent in diseased mink. Tissue alterations suggested that AD in Aleutian genotype mink is more rapidly progressive than is AD in ferrets
