Addressing Stigma and Privacy Through Telemedicine: Qualitative Findings on Enhancing HIV Care Engagement Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups.

We conducted a demonstration project of telemedicine HIV care services at the University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine, Jacksonville. Our sample focused on members of racial and ethnic minority groups living in an urban setting. As part of the project's evaluation, we conducted 13 focus groups. Focus groups assessed patient, staff, and provider experiences with facilitating or hindering factors to engaging in telemedicine. We also explored the decision-making processes among people with HIV (PWH) to engage or not in telemedicine. The 46 focus group participants included 21 PWH: 12 PWH wh

Positioning ethnicity in dementia awareness research: does the use of senility risk ascribing racialised knowledge deficits to minority groups?

Over recent decades, the importance of increasing dementia awareness has been promoted by charities, researchers and governments. In response, a large body of research has emerged that evaluates the awareness of different populations. One such population are minority ethnic communities. Associated studies typically conclude that minority ethnic groups have a poor awareness of dementia and that interventions should be developed to better educate them. Operationalisations of awareness almost always reference senility - the traditional notion that dementia is a natural outcome of ageing - a widel

Survival differences in nasopharyngeal carcinoma among racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The literature on nasopharyngeal carcinoma survival in the United States has focused mostly on Whites or Asians and not much is known about survivorship in other minority racial and ethnic groups. We aimed to determine the disease-specific survival rate and prognostic factors for nasopharyngeal carcinoma survival across the minority United States population. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. SETTING: The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) 13 database from 1992 to 2014 was queried for adult cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (n = 2549). PARTICIPANTS: Eligible cas

Counterspeech encouraging users to adopt the perspective of minority groups reduces hate speech and its amplification on social media.

Online intergroup hostility is a pervasive and troubling issue, yet experimental evidence on how to curb it remains scarce. This study examines counterspeech as a user-driven strategy to reduce hate speech. Drawing on theories that suggest adopting the perspective of minority groups can reduce prejudice, we randomized four counterspeech strategies across the senders of 2102 xenophobic Twitter messages. Compared to a passive control group, we find that the pooled effect of the three perspective-centered strategies-traditional perspective-taking, analogical perspective-taking, and perspective ge

Bullying, minority stress and revenge impulse among autistic college students: group differences by sexual and gender minority status.

This study examines how bullying experiences are associated with retaliatory impulses among autistic university students, highlighting minority stress as a key mediating mechanism and sexual and gender minority (SGM) status as a moderating condition within an intersectional framework. Guided by Minority Stress Theory and Social Information Processing Theory, we surveyed 280 autistic undergraduates; 35% identified as SGM. Participants completed validated measures of bullying, minority stress, retaliatory impulse, and related psychosocial factors. Structural equation modeling and multi-group ana

Understanding a Minority Group's (Roma) Experiences of Access and Quality in Maternity Services.

BACKGROUND: Maternal health is a fundamental human right, ensuring that all women have access to non-discriminatory, equitable and high-quality maternal and reproductive healthcare. Minority groups and migrant populations face significant challenges in accessing maternity services. The Roma are Europe's largest and most marginalised ethnic group. Ireland has a sizable population of Roma migrants, and there is limited information on their experiences of maternal care in Ireland. Their participation in research and user panels is challenging as many lack proficiency in English and tend to have l

Psychosocial concerns of sexual minority youth: complexity and caution in group differences.

This investigation tested a large adolescent sample (n = 14,439) for significant group differences on psychosocial concerns on the basis of intersecting identities of sexual orientation (lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning/less certain, heterosexual), race (Whites, racial minorities), and gender (boys, girls). A significant 2-way interaction between sexual orientation and gender was identified on victimization. Boys reported higher victimization than did girls among heterosexual and questioning/less certain students. Furthermore, significant 3-way interactions between sexual orientation, race,

Classification of major and minor blood group antigens in the Kuwaiti Arab population.

Ethnic differences in blood group frequencies might result in clinically important mismatches for transfusions. Arab people represent a large population for which no comprehensive database of red cell genotypes is available and Kuwaitis are no exception. For instance, the Rh blood group is the most elaborate blood group system that shows a high degree of polymorphism among different ethnic groups, there has been little classification of RH alleles in Arab people. Blood samples from 917 Kuwaiti Arab donors in the Kuwaiti Bone Marrow registry were tested with a single-nucleotide polymorphism DNA

PHS grants for minority group HIV infection education and prevention efforts.

The Office of Minority Health (OMH) was established in December 1985 in response to recommendations developed by the Secretary's Task Force on Black and Minority Health. Originally, OMH's mission emphasized six health problems identified by the Task Force as priority areas: cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke; chemical dependency; diabetes; homicide, suicide, and unintentional injuries; and infant mortality and low birth weight. OMH added HIV infection to the six health priority areas after epidemiologic data showed that the representation of blacks and Hispanics was disproportionately h

End-of-life dementia care: a qualitative study of the experiences and perceptions of minority ethnic and economically disadvantaged groups.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality amongst ageing populations. However, palliative care is often poor or non-existent. People from minority ethnic and economically disadvantaged communities are especially likely to miss out. Research exploring how inclusive end-of-life (EOL) care should be provided for people living with dementia (PLWD) is limited and commonly fails to include sufficient representation of people from minority ethnic groups and those living in poverty. AIMS: Our aim was to understand the experiences and perceptions of EOL dementia care amongst u

Healing relationships between patients from visible minority groups and their clinicians in palliative care: Protocol for an interpretive description study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care supports human dignity across the trajectory of a serious illness. In addition to addressing multiple dimensions of suffering among patients, palliative care aims to foster healing-a relational process through which one experiences personal growth and transcendence. Palliative care clinicians build relationships with patients through communication practices that enhance trust and other relational elements. These relationships hold the potential to mitigate patient suffering. However, patients from visible minority groups may face structural barriers and clinician bi

Interventions supporting people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups in the United Kingdom with musculoskeletal disorders: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) significantly impact quality of life, particularly among Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities in the UK, who face disproportionate burdens and barriers to care. Despite growing recognition of ethnic health disparities, there is limited understanding of interventions tailored to these populations. This scoping review aimed to map the existing literature on interventions for MSDs among Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic groups in the UK, identifying key approaches, gaps, and opportunities for culturally appropriate healthcare delivery. Efficacy of Ofatumumab and Teriflunomide in Patients With Relapsing MS From Racial/Ethnic Minority Groups: ASCLEPIOS I/II Subgroup Analyses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Race and ethnicity may influence the efficacy of disease-modifying therapies in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Incidence of MS in ethnically diverse groups may be higher; however, these populations are under-represented in MS trials. This post hoc analysis compared the proportion of patients achieving 3-parameter no evidence of disease activity (NEDA-3) with ofatumumab vs teriflunomide in participants with relapsing MS (RMS) enrolled in the ASCLEPIOS I/II trials by race/ethnicity subgroup. Increased Anxiety and Depression Among Belgian Sexual Minority Groups During the First COVID-19 Lockdown-Results From an Online Survey.

The COVID-19 pandemic most likely had a negative impact on mental health. Sexual minorities are at higher risk for adverse mental outcomes such as depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. Such mental health disparities may have exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic, due to restricted real-life social contact. The study aim was to examine changes in depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation among Belgian sexual minority adults between the periods before and during the first COVID-19 lockdown. We conducted an online survey, which was disseminated by community organizations throughout Belgiu
