Latent profiles of mental health and care barriers among heterosexual and sexual minority adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents often navigate complex psychological, behavioral, and identity-related challenges, yet many do not seek the mental health support they need. Sexual minority youth face additional identity-based barriers that further hinder access to care. METHOD: A sample of 1,129 Israeli adolescents aged 16-18 (M = 17.42, SD = 1.03), including 30% who identified as sexual minorities, completed measures of mental health, substance use, suicidal ideation, and perceived barriers to care. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) identified subgroups based on mental health and behavioral risk, and Ex

Associations Between Social Deprivation and Mental Health Symptoms in Sexual and Gender Minority Adults.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations include individuals who identify as non-heterosexual and/or whose gender identity does not align with their sex assigned at birth. SGM populations experience higher rates of social deprivation-disadvantages in socioeconomic factors and living conditions-compared to non-SGM groups. While current research highlights the negative health impacts of social deprivation, no work has assessed whether SGM identity moderates associations between social deprivation and mental health symptoms. Further, it is unknown whether specific measures of social deprivati

Poppers Use and Sexual Health Correlates Among Sexual Minority Men in the United States.

Alkyl nitrites, commonly referred to by the slang term "poppers," are widely used in sexual contexts among sexual minority men. Despite longstanding regulatory ambiguity in the United States, few contemporary studies have examined poppers use alongside sexual health behaviors and HIV prevention engagement. This study analyzed survey data from the Men's Body Project, an online survey of sexual minority men in the United States. Analyses were restricted to participants who completed poppers-related items (n = 441). Logistic regression models examined associations between past-year poppers use du

Pre-exposure prophylaxis engagement among sexual minority men in Taiwan: a behavioral health perspective.

In Taiwan, sexual minority men (SMM) account for a significant portion of new HIV cases, highlighting the need for effective prevention measures. However, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use remains limited, necessitating a comprehensive examination of barriers. This study examined PrEP engagement and its predictors among 284 SMM in Taiwan. Participants were categorized into five stages, based on the Transtheoretical Model of Health Behavior Change, reflecting distinct levels of PrEP engagement. Ordinal logistic regression, informed by the Behavioral Model of Health Service Use, identified fac

An Exploratory Analysis of Minority Stress Experiences and Mental Ill-Health in Bisexual Adults.

Despite an increase in research examining sexual minority groups, there remains comparatively less targeted research with bisexual people, as they are often absorbed into lesbian and gay samples in research or disregarded entirely. Given the existing data suggesting that bisexual people have higher rates of mental health issues than lesbian women and gay men, it is critical that this group's mental health, and risk factors of mental ill-health, be explored independently. The current study aimed to investigate the risk factors of bisexual-identified individuals' mental health and suicidality us

Reactions to Sexual, Substance Use, and Mental Health Surveys Among Rural Sexual Minority Men.

Rural gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men's (SMM) comfort levels answering sensitive health topics are unknown. This online survey explored comfort levels of 399 rural SMM in the Southern United States when responding to five sensitive health topics (sexual behavior, alcohol use, drug use, sexualized drug use, and mental health), as well as examined demographic and behavioral differences in these comfort levels. Multiple linear regression models were analyzed. More than 70% of participants reported being very or somewhat comfortable answering all five health topics. More politically l

Prospective Effects of Resilience on Mental Health among Sexual and Gender Minority Young People.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals who are assigned-female-at-birth (i.e., sexual minority women, transgender men, and gender diverse individuals [SMWTGD]) experience an increased risk for negative mental health outcomes due to minority stress related to their minoritized identity. One proposed protective factor against negative mental health outcomes is resilience, which is one's ability to effectively achieve positive outcomes following stressful events. Past research shows cross-sectional associations between resilience and mental health in both the general population and SGM indi

Daily experiences of minority stress and mental health in transgender and gender-diverse individuals.

Transgender and gender-diverse people experience various minority stressors although minimal research has examined prospective effects on daily affect or mental health. We explored rates of marginalization for transgender and gender-diverse participants in a daily diary study and the concurrent and prospective associations with daily affect and weekly measures of depression and anxiety symptoms, as well as the mediating effects of internalized stigma, rumination, and isolation. There were 167 participants (82.2% white; M age = 25) retained in the daily surveys. Participants completed surveys f

The Relationship Between Intersectional Oppression and Affirmation and Latino Sexual Minority Men's Mental Health.

Purpose: Latino sexual minority men (LSMM) may experience oppression based on their ethnicity, sexual orientation, and migratory status, yet scientific literature is only beginning to explore the intersection of these experiences. This study examined mental health (MH) in relation to LSMM's experiences of intersectional oppression and affirmation. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of baseline data from a cohort study examining LSMM's (n = 290) health care engagement in Miami, FL, from February to September 2020. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified classes based on self-reported mul

The Role of Implementation Science in Reducing Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health Disparities.

Owing to multiple and multilevel ecological factors, sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations exhibit persistent mental health disparities. SGM populations are also at increased risk for never being reached by evidence-based mental health care in real-world settings, which is essential for reducing these disparities. To be maximally effective in reducing these disparities, we must strive to bring our research findings into routine clinical care quickly. Implementation science can help SGM health researchers achieve this goal. This perspective outlines how researchers can use implementation

Mental Health Challenges and Needs among Sexual and Gender Minority People in Western Kenya.

Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people in Kenya face pervasive socio-cultural and structural discrimination. Persistent stress stemming from anti-SGM stigma and prejudice may place SGM individuals at increased risk for negative mental health outcomes. This study explored experiences with violence (intimate partner violence and SGM-based violence), mental health outcomes (psychological distress, PTSD symptoms, and depressive symptoms), alcohol and other substance use, and prioritization of community needs among SGM adults in Western Kenya. Methods: This study was conducted by membe

Health disparities between genderqueer, transgender, and cisgender individuals: An extension of minority stress theory.

Interpersonal, social, and structural stressors have been identified as key elements that explain health disparities between transgender and cisgender individuals. However, most of this research has focused on binary transgender individuals or has not differentiated between binary and nonbinary individuals; little research has examined the experiences of minority stress or health of those identifying outside the gender binary. Guided by intersectionality and drawing on a sample of 3,568 college students from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health's 2012-2016 database-of whom 892 identified ou

A transdiagnostic minority stress treatment approach for gay and bisexual men's syndemic health conditions.

Developing and deploying separate treatments for separate conditions seems ill-suited to intervening upon the co-occurring, and possibly functionally similar, psychosocial conditions facing gay and bisexual men. This article argues for the need to create transdiagnostic interventions that reduce multiple syndemic conditions facing gay and bisexual men at the level of their shared source in minority stress pathways. This article first reviews psychosocial syndemic conditions affecting gay and bisexual men, then suggests pathways that might link minority stress to psychosocial syndemics based on

Health-risk behaviors among middle school students in a large majority-minority school district.

Since 1991, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has administered the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) biennially to representative samples of high school students. YRBS results indicate that health-risk behaviors often developed during middle school years. To date, few state and local education agencies have administered the YRBS-Middle School. This study measured prevalence of health-risk behaviors among middle school students in a large, majority-minority school district (n = 1,783). Results indicated that young adolescents (ages 11-14) are engaging in multiple health-risk behavi

Social determinants of health as risk and protective factors for health care access among sexual and gender minority parents.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people are increasingly becoming parents. To examine the relationship between social determinants of health (SDOH) and health care access among SGM parents, we used 2018-2019 prospective cohort data from The PRIDE Study. We compared health care access between 555 SGM parents and 555 age-matched SGM non-parents. We then used modified Poisson regression to assess the association between SDOH at baseline and health care access at one-year follow-up among SGM parents. We found that SGM parents and SGM non-parents reported differences in SGM identity disclosure to h
