Traditional Mirror Therapy (MT) uses the reflection of an unaffected limb to promote neural recovery in the affected limb post-stroke. Robotic Mirror Therapy (RMT) has since emerged with robotics development, but current devices are often unsuitable for Point-Of-Care (POC) due to their cost, complexity, and lack of user-friendliness. To address these issues, we developed a portable, affordable, and user-friendly hand-finger rehabilitation system integrating a 21-Degree-Of-Freedom (DoF) parallel manipulator (5 active DoF), a motion sensor, and a Virtual Reality (VR) piano task. The VR tasks, in

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide; therefore, an effective rehabilitation strategy is fundamental. Mirror therapy (MT) has been a popular approach for upper extremity rehabilitation, but it presents some limitations. Recent advancements in virtual reality (VR) technology have introduced immersive VR-based MT, potentially overcoming these limitations and enhancing rehabilitation outcomes.
AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel 360° immersive virtual reality-based MT (360MT) in upper extremity rehabilitation for stroke patients, comp

The role of embodiment in communication is attracting an increased interest. This interest is to some extent caused by hypotheses and findings concerning mirror neurons in macaques, that is, neurons that are activated by production as well as perception of, for example, a certain movement of action. Mirror neurons seem to provide a fairly simple mechanism for acting, perceiving, imitating and pantomime, which could be crucial to the development of human communication and language. A number of theories try to extend similar ideas in describing human embodied communication. Some of the consequen

Robot-assisted mirror therapy (MRT) is a cutting-edge rehabilitative treatment that combines mirror therapy and rehabilitation robots and can improve stroke patient participation in rehabilitation training. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of MRT training in patients with right-hemisphere damage (RHD). Fifty-three RHD patients were randomly assigned to the MRT (N = 17), passive movement (PM) (N = 19), or functional occupational therapy (FOT) group (N = 17) for 4 weeks of training. All three groups received conventional medication and rehabilitation therapy, along with 20 mi

BACKGROUND: Mirror therapy provides a visual illusion of a normal moving limb by using the mirror reflection of the unaffected arm instead of viewing the paretic limb and is used in rehabilitation to improve hand function. Little is known about the mechanism underlying its effect in children with hemiparesis.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the mirror illusion (MI) on the excitability of the primary motor cortex (M1) in children and adolescents.
METHODS: Twelve patients with hemiparesis (10-20 years) and 8 typically developing subjects (8-17 years) participated. Corticospinal reorgan

The movements of the affected upper limb in infantile hemiplegia are slower and clumsy. This leads to a decrease in the use of the affected hand. The visual effect obtained using the mirror box and the observation of actions in another individual can activate the same structural neuronal cells responsible for the execution of these actions. This research will study the affected upper limb functionality in hemiplegia infantile from 6 to 12 years old after the application of two intervention protocols: observation action therapy and mirror therapy combined with observation action therapy. We provide direct electrophysiological evidence that mirror therapy (MT) can change brain activity and aid in the recovery of motor function after stroke. In this longitudinal single-case study, the subject was a 58-yr-old man with right-hand hemiplegia due to ischemic stroke. Over a 9-mo period we treated him with MT twice a week and measured electroencephalograms (EEG) before, during, and after each therapy session. Using advanced signal processing methods, we identified five distinct movement-related oscillatory EEG components: one slow component designated as mu rhythm and four faster comp

INTRODUCTION: The use of visual and proprioceptive feedback is a key property of motor rehabilitation techniques. This feedback can be used alone, for example, for vision in mirror or video therapy, for proprioception in focal tendon vibration therapy, or in combination, for example, in robot-assisted training. This Electroencephalographic (EEG) study in healthy subjects explored the distinct neurophysiological impact of adding visual (video therapy), proprioceptive (focal tendinous vibration), or combined feedback (video therapy and focal tendinous vibration) to a motor imagery task.

In mirror training (MIT), stroke patients strive to move their hands while looking at the reflected image of the unaffected one. The recruitment of the mirror neurons and visual-proprioceptive conflict are expected to facilitate the paretic voluntary movement. Here, a reversed MIT (REMIT) is presented, which requires moving hands while looking at the reflected image of the paretic one, giving the illusion of being unable to move the unimpaired hand. This study compares MIT and REMIT on post-stroke upper-limb recovery to gain clues on the mechanism of action of mirror therapies. Eight chronic s

Mirror-induced visual illusion obtained through mirror therapy is widely used to facilitate motor recovery after stroke. Activation of primary motor cortex (M1) ipsilateral to the moving limb has been reported during mirror-induced visual illusion. However, the mechanism through which the mirror illusion elicits motor execution processes without movements observed in the mirrored limb remains unclear. This study aims to review evidence based on brain imaging studies for testing the hypothesis that neural processes associated with kinaesthetic motor imagery are attributed to ipsilateral M1 acti

BACKGROUND: Upper limb motor impairment is a major contributor to long-term disability after stroke. Mirror therapy (MT) promotes motor relearning through visuomotor feedback, whereas transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may facilitate neuroplasticity by modulating cortical excitability. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate whether MT combined with tDCS provides additional benefits for poststroke upper limb rehabilitation.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, and Wanfang for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) pub

BACKGROUND: Mirror therapy (MT) is an increasingly employed method aimed at reducing phantom pain and other negative sensations following loss of a limb or damage to sensorimotor systems. However, the brain processes associated with the perception of limb ownership, a key correlate of MT, are unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether transient perceptions of limb ownership together with associated neural activity can be elucidated using a purpose-developed mirror reflection task combined with electrophysiological (EEG) measures and cutting-edge analyses.
METHODS: Brain activity was measured onl

Mirror therapy (MT) is a treatment for improving motor function after stroke. Video therapy (VT) training combines observation and imitation of video clips, and it has been used to conduct efficient occupational therapy. We sought to determine the effects of MT and VT on tool-use with healthy young adults. We assigned participants to three different training groups in which they used their non-dominant left hands to move a ball with chopsticks: (a) a self-paced MT group (N = 14), (b) an MT group who moved the ball while looking at the mirror image of the right hand with a sound cue (4-second i

BACKGROUND: Patients with facial paralysis are significantly limited in their quality of life (QoL). If no irreversible nerve damage is apparent, intensive training of the facial muscles is recommended in addition to drug-based therapy with cortisone. In order to improve training, we have developed a digital biofeedback mirror with motion magnification to indirectly influence the vegetative nervous system.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to evaluate the reliability of the biofeedback program compared to clinical examination and classification according to House-Brackmann.

Action observation training (AOT) is recognised as an effective method for enhancing motor function by engaging mirror neurons. This study investigated the combined effects of AOT and upper limb robot therapy on upper extremity function, movement quality, activities of daily living (ADL), muscle activity, and coordination in stroke patients. Twenty-four subacute stroke patients were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (AOT + robot therapy, n = 12) or a control group (robot therapy only, n = 12). Primary outcomes were assessed using FMA-UE and ARAT, while secondary outcomes includ
