Activation of D2-Expressing Medium Spiny Neurons in the Nucleus Accumbens Core Mirrors the Delaying Effect of Novelty Exposure on Feeding Onset in Rats.

The nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) plays a central role in integrating reward, motivation, and environmental cues to guide goal-directed behaviors, including feeding. Within the NAcc, D2-expressing medium spiny neurons (D2-MSNs) are implicated in inhibitory control and aversive processing, yet their role in feeding initiation remains poorly understood. Using a chemogenetic approach (DREADDs) in male rats housed in calorimetry-metabolic cages, we investigated the contribution of NAcc D2-MSNs to meal patterning and locomotor activity. Activation of D2-MSNs delayed feeding onset and reduced locomo

The clinical efficacy of virtual reality technology based on the mirror neuron theory in upper limb rehabilitation of stroke patients: a protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: While mirror neuron-based rehabilitation approaches demonstrate efficacy in post-stroke upper limb motor recovery. Crucially, whether sequential activation of sensory mirror neurons preceding motor mirror neurons enhances functional outcomes remains unsubstantiated. Furthermore, conventional protocols require auditory-controlled environments and sustained high-attentional engagement for optimal efficacy. This study proposes a novel integrated intervention incorporating somatosensory observation (SO) components into Graded Motor Imagery (GMI), augmented by virtual reality (VR) techn

Embodied cognition in neurodegenerative disorders: What do we know so far? A narrative review focusing on the mirror neuron system and clinical applications.

Embodied cognition is a theoretical perspective that considers every form of human knowledge and cognition "embodied", as they pass through bodily experience. The aim of this narrative review is to investigate the importance of mirror neurons system in EC, as well as the EC role in neurodegenerative diseases. This narrative review shows deep connections between body and mind: body states influence mental functions such as perception and reasoning, while mental states cause changes in the body, especially in neurodegenerative disorders. Indeed, abnormalities in EC were found in dementia, Parkin

Does Action Observation of the Whole Task Influence Mirror Neuron System and Upper Limb Muscle Activity Better Than Part Task in People With Stroke?

Background: Task-based action observation and imitation (AOI) is a promising intervention to enhance upper limb (UL) motor function poststroke. However, whether whole/part task must be trained in the AOI therapy needs further substantiation. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess and compare the mirror neuron activity and UL muscle activity during AOI of reaching task in terms of whole task (complete movement) and part task (proximal arm movements and distal arm movements). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 26 participants with first-time unilateral stroke were asked to obse

A proposal for new neurorehabilitative intervention on Moebius Syndrome patients after 'smile surgery'. Proof of concept based on mirror neuron system properties and hand-mouth synergistic activity.

Studies of the last twenty years on the motor and premotor cortices of primates demonstrated that the motor system is involved in the control and initiation of movements, and in higher cognitive processes, such as action understanding, imitation, and empathy. Mirror neurons are only one example of such theoretical shift. Their properties demonstrate that motor and sensory processing are coupled in the brain. Such knowledge has been also central for designing new neurorehabilitative therapies for patients suffering from brain injuries and consequent motor deficits. Moebius Syndrome patients, fo

Mirror neuron activation as a function of explicit learning: changes in mu-event-related power after learning novel responses to ideomotor compatible, partially compatible, and non-compatible stimuli.

Questions regarding the malleability of the mirror neuron system (MNS) continue to be debated. MNS activation has been reported when people observe another person performing biological goal-directed behaviors, such as grasping a cup. These findings support the importance of mapping goal-directed biological behavior onto one's motor repertoire as a means of understanding the actions of others. Still, other evidence supports the Associative Sequence Learning (ASL) model which predicts that the MNS responds to a variety of stimuli after sensorimotor learning, not simply biological behavior. MNS a

Glucocerebrosidase 1 deficient Danio rerio mirror key pathological aspects of human Gaucher disease and provide evidence of early microglial activation preceding alpha-synuclein-independent neuronal cell death.

Autosomal recessively inherited glucocerebrosidase 1 (GBA1) mutations cause the lysosomal storage disorder Gaucher's disease (GD). Heterozygous GBA1 mutations (GBA1(+/-)) are the most common risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous studies typically focused on the interaction between the reduction of glucocerebrosidase (enzymatic) activity in GBA1(+/-) carriers and alpha-synuclein-mediated neurotoxicity. However, it is unclear whether other mechanisms also contribute to the increased risk of PD in GBA1(+/-) carriers. The zebrafish genome does not contain alpha-synuclein (SNCA), thus

Does rTMS on brain areas of mirror neurons lead to higher improvements on symptom severity and empathy compared to the rTMS standard procedure? - Results from a double-blind interventional study in individuals with major depressive disorders.

BACKGROUND: A key feature of major depressive disorders is the lack of emotional processing such as empathy. To counter this, we tested, if brain stimulation on areas rich of mirror neurons on the left inferior parietal lobe (lIPL) might improve emotional processing, including empathy, compared to a standard brain stimulation on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC). METHODS: Twenty inpatients (mean age: 38.9 years; 55% females) with severe major depressive disorders and stable treatment of sertraline at therapeutic dosages were randomly assigned to either the rTMS condition on are

FMRI evidence of 'mirror' responses to geometric shapes.

Mirror neurons may be a genetic adaptation for social interaction. Alternatively, the associative hypothesis proposes that the development of mirror neurons is driven by sensorimotor learning, and that, given suitable experience, mirror neurons will respond to any stimulus. This hypothesis was tested using fMRI adaptation to index populations of cells with mirror properties. After sensorimotor training, where geometric shapes were paired with hand actions, BOLD response was measured while human participants experienced runs of events in which shape observation alternated with action execution

Cognitive genomics of learning delay and low level of social performance monitoring in macaque.

Cognitive skills and the underlying neural architecture are under the influence of genetics. Cognitive genomics research explores the triadic relationship between genes, brain, and cognition, with its major strategy being genotype-driven. Here we show that an inverse strategy is feasible to identify novel candidate genes for particular neuro-cognitive phenotypes in macaques. Two monkeys, originally involved in separate psychological studies, exhibited learning delay and low levels of social performance monitoring. In one monkey, mirror neurons were fewer compared to controls and mu suppression

Normal movement selectivity in autism.

It has been proposed that individuals with autism have difficulties understanding the goals and intentions of others because of a fundamental dysfunction in the mirror neuron system. Here, however, we show that individuals with autism exhibited not only normal fMRI responses in mirror system areas during observation and execution of hand movements but also exhibited typical movement-selective adaptation (repetition suppression) when observing or executing the same movement repeatedly. Movement selectivity is a defining characteristic of neurons involved in movement perception, including mirror

The introduction of IMITATE-R and its comparison with the IMITATE treatment method in the naming ability of two Persian speaking aphasic patients.

Mirror neurons that have properties of audio/visual-acuity play a key role in imitation of movement performance. Since speech is a collection of coordinated movements in the producing organs, observing and imitation of speech movements can stimulate these neurons. In addition, observing hand movements trigger some actions related to the verbal cortex in the network of mirror neurons. According to the hypothesis of mirror neurons, new therapeutic approaches, including IMITATE, have been proposed for patients with aphasia. In the present study, using the IMITATE programme, a new therapeutic appr

Potential role of monkey inferior parietal neurons coding action semantic equivalences as precursors of parts of speech.

The anterior portion of the inferior parietal cortex possesses comprehensive representations of actions embedded in behavioural contexts. Mirror neurons, which respond to both self-executed and observed actions, exist in this brain region in addition to those originally found in the premotor cortex. We found that parietal mirror neurons responded differentially to identical actions embedded in different contexts. Another type of parietal mirror neuron represents an inverse and complementary property of responding equally to dissimilar actions made by itself and others for an identical purpose.

The mirror mechanism: recent findings and perspectives.

Mirror neurons are a specific type of visuomotor neuron that discharge both when a monkey executes a motor act and when it observes a similar motor act performed by another individual. In this article, we review first the basic properties of these neurons. We then describe visual features recently investigated which indicate that, besides encoding the goal of motor acts, mirror neurons are modulated by location in space of the observed motor acts, by the perspective from which the others' motor acts are seen, and by the value associated with the object on which others' motor acts are performed

Neurons Modulated by Action Execution and Observation in the Macaque Medial Parietal Cortex.

The observation of an action evokes discharges in a rich network of cortical areas [1-14]. In the present study, we have evaluated the effect of grasp execution and of the observation of others' grasping on the activity of neurons in the medial parietal area V6A, an area of the reach-to-grasp network never explored to date in this regard. Although V6A neurons are typically active during one's own grasping execution but not while one observes another's grasping, a minority of neurons showed mirror properties, active both when monkeys performed the task and when they observed it being performed

The Imitation Game in Children With Tourette Syndrome: A Lack of Impulse Control to Mirror Environmental Stimuli.

The learning process in humans requires continuous contacts with environmental stimuli, especially during neurodevelopmental growth. These functions are assisted by the coding potential of mirror neurons to serve social interactions. This ability to learn imitating the observed behavior is no longer necessary during adulthood, and control mechanisms prevent automatic mirroring. However, children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome could encounter coding errors at the level of the mirror neurons system as these cortical regions are themselves the ones affected in the syndrome. Combined with imp

Upper Limb Electromyographic Responses to Motor Imagery and Action Observation in Acquired Brain Injury.

Acquired Brain Injuries are one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. One of the most frequent sequelae is motor impairment of the upper limbs, which affects people's functionality and quality of life. Following the discovery of mirror neurons, new techniques were developed based on the mechanisms of neuronal plasticity, such as motor imagery (MI) and action observation (AO). We propose a protocol using electromyographic recordings of forearm muscles in people who have suffered a stroke during an MI task and an AO task. Three different experimental conditions will be stu

Enhancement of capability for motor imagery using vestibular imbalance stimulation during brain computer interface.

Objective.Motor imagery (MI), based on the theory of mirror neurons and neuroplasticity, can promote motor cortical activation in neurorehabilitation. The strategy of MI based on brain-computer interface (BCI) has been used in rehabilitation training and daily assistance for patients with hemiplegia in recent years. However, it is difficult to maintain the consistency and timeliness of receiving external stimulation to neural activation in most subjects owing to the high variability of electroencephalogram (EEG) representation across trials/subjects. Moreover, in practical application, MI-BCI
