Zhong Dou Jie Fa and Niu Dou Qian Shuo were written by John Glasgow Kerr, a missionary from America, trained local smallpox practitioners in Guangzhou in the second half of the 19th century. The two books Zhong Dou Jie Fa and Niu Dou Qian Shuo introduced simple and easy ways for practical inoculation. The books suggested that it was not necessary to consider acupoints and seasons for vaccination. They introduced the method of storing vaccine in capillary tubes and made use of microscopes and vaseline, popularly used in Europe at the time, promoting the development of vaccination technology obj

A case report of a live birth following a term pregnancy located in a non-communicating rudimentary horn of a unicornuate uterus in a rural hospital in Nigeria is presented. A 32-year-old primiparous woman registered for antenatal care at a rural missionary hospital at 28 weeks gestation. She had intermittent unexplained vaginal bleeding prior to booking and multiple ultrasound scans in different centers affirmed a viable intrauterine pregnancy. She had an elective cesarean section at 38 weeks gestational age on account of a persistent oblique breech presentation and "low lying placenta." Intr

The fight to achieve global eradication of poliomyelitis continues. Although native transmission of poliovirus was halted in the Western Hemisphere by the early 1990s, and only a few cases have been imported in the past few years, much of Latin America's story remains to be told. Peru conducted a successful flexible, or flattened, vertical campaign in 1991. The initial disease-oriented programs began to collaborate with community-oriented primary health care systems, thus strengthening public-private partnerships and enabling the common goal of poliomyelitis eradication to prevail despite ramp

This article examines the reception of the early modern hospital among the indigenous people of the Andes under Spanish colonial rule. During the period covered by this study (sixteenth to mid-eighteenth centuries), the hospital was conceived primarily as a manifestation of the sovereign’s paternalistic concern for his subjects’ spiritual well being. Hospitals in the Spanish American colonies were organised along racial lines, and those catering to Indians were meant to complement the missionary endeavour. Besides establishing hospitals in the main urban centres, Spanish colonial legislation i

This study focuses on the historical construction of the system of Chinese physics terminology against the backdrop of the globalization of Western scientific knowledge, and analyzes its role in shaping cultural identity and fostering domestic academic independent practice capabilities within the scientific discourse. In the early stage, the terminology unification efforts led by missionaries laid the foundation for the establishment of China's physics terminology system. However, due to loose organization and lack of official promotion and support, most terms failed to achieve effective unifi

In modern Shanghai, smallpox was one of the most threatening diseases with its mortality rate going up to 30 percent. In response to the disease, Dr. William Lockhart, a medical missionary of the London Missionary Society, introduced vaccination to the Chinese people in Shanghai. He built the first western style hospital in Shanghai, Renji Hospital, in 1843. At this time, native doctors also played a very important role. For example, Huang Chun-pu was in charge of the dispensary in the Chinese City in Shanghai, and he was the one who introduced vaccination under Dr. Lockhart's direction. In 18

Adult expatriates in countries where hepatitis B virus (HBV) is highly endemic have an increased risk of HBV infection, but little is known about risks to their children or about patterns of spread. The epidemiology of HBV infection was studied among 124 unvaccinated Dutch missionaries and family members who lived in a rural area of Nigeria. Antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen were found in 5 (9.8%) of 51 adults (incidence rate, 1.7 per 1000 person-months at risk [PMAR]) and 9 (12.3%) of 73 children (incidence rate, 2.8 per 1000 PMAR). Vertical transmission of HBV was a likely source of inf

Sixty-two HIV positive infants who were admitted to the Missionaries of Charity Orphanage in Addis Ababa were followed From July 25, 1991 to July 30, 1995 for a total period of 4 years. Regular clinical examination and treatment by a paediatrician was being offered to these infants in addition to monitoring of their HIV serostatus every three months until the age of 18 months and every year after that. Among those aged above 18 months, 14 children were HIV sero-positive and alive and 4 children were HIV sero-positive but died. Thirty-three children had sero-reverted to negative. The mother-to-

African tick bite fever (ATBF) is a tick-borne rickettsial disease most often observed in North American and European tourists returning home from the southern portion of Africa. Ticks infected with Rickettsia africae transmit this parasitic bacterium to humans, who subsequently develop an influenza-like illness, one or more inoculation eschars, and in some cases, a cutaneous rash. Because ATBF often presents with non-specific symptoms that suggest other infectious diseases, establishing the diagnosis may be difficult. Confirmatory assays, including serology and nucleic acid amplification, may

This article surveys the evolution of Rwandan family planning practices from the nation's mythico-historical origins to the present. Rwanda is typically regarded as a patriarchal society in which Rwandan women have, throughout history, endured limited rights and opportunities. However, oral traditions narrated by twentieth-century Rwandan historians, storytellers and related experts, and interpreted by the scholars and missionaries who lived in Rwanda during the nation's colonial period, suggest that gender norms in Rwanda were more complicated. Shifting practices related to family planning -

Western medicine was first introduced to Taiwan by medical missionaries in the mid-19th century. Modernization of medicine was systematically transplanted to Taiwan in the Japanese colonial period, and ophthalmology was established third among hospital departments, following internal medicine and surgery. Dr Hidetaka Yamaguchi, an ophthalmologist, was the first head of the Taihoku Hospital, later known as National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH; Taipei, Taiwan). Ophthalmologists during the colonial period conducted studies on tropical and infectious eye diseases. After World War II, ophthalm

In 1970, Ted Williams - a medical missionary who had been running a small hospital at Kuluva in the West Nile region of Uganda for decades - was approached by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to help establish a major study on the possible role of Epstein-Barr Virus in the aetiology of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL). At the time, there was intense global interest in BL, as the cancer promised to be the first shown to have a viral aetiology. IARC centred its project at Kuluva Hospital and in the West Nile district because of Williams' unusually detailed and accurate records. Will

Japanese physicians encountered difficulties in obtaining information from The Netherlands on general anesthetics since 1848. It was a turning point when Chinese medical textbooks were imported in the latter half of the 1850 s. They were written by Benjamin Hobson (1816-1873), a British missionary and physician who lived in China for many years. Among them, Siyi Luelun (Sei-i Ryakuron) published in 1857, was widely welcome by Japanese surgeons and medical students. Kenzo Yoshida (1848-1924), a physician from the Hiroshima Domain, was impressed by a two-page description of chloroform anesthesia

During the first quarter of the twentieth century, tropical neurasthenia was a popular diagnosis for a nervous condition experienced by Europeans in the topics. Tropical neurasthenia was not psychosis or madness, but was rather an ennui or loss of "edge" brought about by the strains of tropical life, especially the unfamiliar, hot climate. A catch-all for a wide range of symptoms, many missionaries, colonial staff, and settlers throughout Empire were repatriated because of it, although this article concentrates on Colonial Service employees working in British East Africa. Korean modern medicine was imported from American missionaries in the late 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, Japanese medicine, which was influenced by German medicine, was imported along with the Japanese invasion. After the liberation of Korea, however, American medicine influenced the Korean Medicine in a broad spectrum: for example, medical science, medical instruments, and health care system. Not only an unstable social environment but also the rapid development of medical science changed medical terms. In order to investigate the 50-year transition of medical terms in K

Franciscan missionary Giovanni Di Plano Carpini traveled in 1245 to a country named Yeke Tartar, to visit a certain man called Genghis Khan. His journey's report narrated peculiar dietary habits of the locals: "they eat anything, even lice". Little that Carpini knew, he had actually documented the earliest known to us record of oral vaccination against blood-borne infections - an approach that is still used occasionally in the present-day Mongolia for therapy of hepatitis. Currently, efforts aimed at developing therapeutic hepatitis vaccines have switched to more palatable path, but we may sti

Modern medicine was first introduced into Taiwan by missionary hospitals in 1865. However, Japanese governors following Japan's medical reform applied modern medicine as the standard of practice in the year 1896. They also imported 150 doctors from Japan to promote public hygiene and control infectious diseases, such as malaria, plague, cholera, dysentery, etc. The reasons that the Courts started to use criminal law to deal with medical malpractice during 1950-1960s may be attributed to the following: costly and ineffective civil actions, chaotic medical licensing, a period of upheaval during

Humans have long sought to comprehend the etiology and mechanisms of disease, as well as the pathological alterations underlying clinical manifestations at the onset of illness. In ancient Chinese myths and legends, disease was commonly attributed to supernatural forces such as demons and malevolent spirits. With a better understanding of the natural world, these early superstitions gave way to explanations based on natural causation. Around the time that Hippocrates advanced the concept that natural factors were important in health and disease, Chinese medical scholars developed the theoretic

After the evacuation from Africa to Western hospitals of several international workers with the Ebola virus disease, the first case of contagion outside Africa occurred in Madrid, Spain. A nursing care assistant who had attended a missionary repatriated from Sierra Leone contracted the disease. On October 7th 2014, the patient arrived at the University Hospital La Paz-Carlos III in Madrid. She remained in the hospital for 30 days, 25 of which were in strict isolation in a negative pressure room with air lock anteroom; personal protective equipment was required. About 1% of the population of Malawi is blind. The major contributors are cataract (40%), trachoma and other infections (15%) and measles/Vitamin A deficiency (15%). There are 3 ophthalmologists in government service. However, one serves as the director of medical services, and is therefore frequently burdened with administrative duties. In addition, one missionary ophthalmologist and 25 ophthalmic auxiliaries are available. Two of the ophthalmic auxiliaries are being trained to perform cataract surgery to aid the ophthalmologists in attacking the current backlog of approx. 24,000 blind catara
