Severe Parechovirus 3 Infections in Young Infants-Kansas and Missouri, 2014.

BACKGROUND: Infection with parechovirus type 3 (PeV3) can cause severe neurologic and sepsis-like illness in young infants; clinical and epidemiologic descriptions have been limited. We aimed to characterize PeV3 illness and explore risk factors for acquisition in a cluster of neonatal cases at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. METHODS: Cerebrospinal fluid specimens were obtained from infants aged <180 days who were hospitalized with sepsis-like illness or meningitis between June 1 and November 1, 2014. PeV-positive specimens were sequenced at the Centers for Disease Control

Allergy epidemiology in the St. Louis, Missouri, area. V. Cereal ingestants.

Among the cereal ingestants, rice, rye, wheat, corn and oats, provocative skin tests of patients differed according to age. Sensitivity to rice and oats was low for children and that to rice in particular was high for adults, suggesting a differential immunological response to rice allergens. Compared to patient grass pollen reactions, response to ingestants was noticeably lower. Cross-reactivity among ingestants was also lower, particularly between oats and the other cereals.

Bacillary hemoglobinuria in beef cattle infected with Fascioloides magna in Missouri.

Bacillary hemoglobinuria (BH) is an infectious disease, mostly affecting cattle, caused by Clostridium haemolyticum (C. novyi type D), with acute hepatic necrosis and intravascular hemolysis. Cattle are typically predisposed to BH by liver injury caused by Fasciola hepatica, although cases have been reported in cattle without evidence of this parasite. Here we describe a cluster of 14 BH cases from 7 counties in north-central to central Missouri submitted to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory between December 2020 and April 2023. Postmortem examination in all cases revealed hemoglobinuria and

Detection of Amblyomma maculatum and Rickettsia parkeri in prairies of Central Missouri.

The destruction and decline of prairie habitats due to landscape repurposing have profoundly impacted the diversity of plant, animal, and insect life. In the Central United States, the reconstruction of prairie habitats from farmland is a widely applied strategy to raise diversity and recreate a healthy, complex ecosystem. In Central Missouri, we examine the consequences of reconstruction efforts on the prevalence of zoonotic diseases and their associated pathogens by performing tick-flagging at two prairie sites. In doing so, we have observed large populations of Dog ticks, Dermacentor variab

The Opioid Crisis in Missouri: A Call to Action for Physicians, Legislators, and Society.

Opioid overdose deaths in the United States increased sharply over the last decade leading the President to declare a national emergency. The neurobiology of opioid addiction is explored in conjunction with the historical events preceding the current epidemic. A patient-centric perspective is provided along with rationale for contemporary Medical Assisted Therapy (MAT) options to safely reduce overdose deaths and other preventable consequences of prescription misuse and heroin abuse. A multidisciplinary medical provider approach is essential, in addition to legislative efforts to reduce curren

Necrotizing cutaneous mucormycosis after a tornado in Joplin, Missouri, in 2011.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by environmentally acquired molds. We investigated a cluster of cases of cutaneous mucormycosis among persons injured during the May 22, 2011, tornado in Joplin, Missouri. METHODS: We defined a case as a soft-tissue infection in a person injured during the tornado, with evidence of a mucormycete on culture or immunohistochemical testing plus DNA sequencing. We conducted a case-control study by reviewing medical records and conducting interviews with case patients and hospitalized controls. DNA sequencing and whole-genome sequencing were pe

Update of cancer and non-cancer mortality in the Missouri poultry cohort.

BACKGROUND: workers in poultry slaughtering and processing plants have one of the highest human exposures to transmissible agents that cause cancer and other diseases in chickens and turkeys, and also have other occupational carcinogenic exposures. The general population is also exposed to these transmissible agents. METHODS: we investigated mortality in workers who belong to a poultry union in Missouri, and estimated standardized mortality ratios. RESULTS: significantly increased mortality was observed for some leukemias, benign neoplasms, thyroid diseases, bacterial infections, and schizop

Distribution of selenium, mercury, and methylmercury in surficial Missouri River sediments.

Sediment deposition into Lewis and Clark Lake, an impoundment of the Missouri River, has caused substantial storage capacity reductions. Current proposals to hydrologically flush sediment would disturb river and reservoir sediment that may contain heavy metals. We quantified existing concentrations of selenium (Se), mercury (Hg), and methylmercury (MeHg) in surficial sediments upstream of and in Lewis and Clark Lake. We found elevated levels of Se (range 0.12-9.62 microg/g) and Hg (range 0.021.55 microg/g) at several sites throughout the study area; however, few sites contained levels of MeHg

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 in Missouri: Current Situation and Pandemic Potential.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, which has caused severe disease in poultry since 1996, has become panzootic in wild birds and recently has spread to dairy cattle and other mammalian species in the United States. Although few human cases have been reported, devastating HPAI H5N1 poultry outbreaks and massive dieoffs in wild birds and in some mammals raise concern about pandemic potential. Surveillance, early detection, public health interventions, farm biosecurity measures, and next-generation vaccines may reduce the risk of a future HPAI H5N1 pandemic.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autistic Traits, and Substance Use Among Missouri Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Although existing literature demonstrates the association of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with both substance use (SU) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), few studies have examined rates of SU among adolescents with elevated ASD symptoms, with or without comorbid ADHD. Clinic-based studies suggest a possible protective effect of ASD against SU, but this has not been confirmed in population-based studies. OBJECTIVE: We examined alcohol, tobacco, and drug use in adolescents with either ADHD, elevated autistic traits, or both as compared with controls. METHODS: Su

Birth outcomes of planned home births in Missouri: a population-based study.

We evaluated the birth outcomes of planned home births. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Missouri vital records from 1989 to 2005 to compare the risk of newborn seizure and intrapartum fetal death in planned home births attended by physicians/certified nurse midwives (CNMs) or non-CNMs with hospitals/birthing center births. The study sample included singleton pregnancies between 36 and 44 weeks of gestation without major congenital anomalies or breech presentation ( N = 859,873). The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of newborn seizures in planned home births attended by non-CNMs was 5.

Perinatal periods of risk analysis of infant mortality in Jackson County, Missouri.

The perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) methodology provides an easy-to-use analytical approach to infant mortality that helps focus community initiatives for improving maternal and infant health. Because few analyses have been published, many public health practitioners may be unfamiliar with PPOR. This article demonstrates the application of PPOR analysis using infant mortality in Jackson County, Missouri. While the PPOR consists of two phases, this analysis was restricted to the initial phase of the overall process. The second phase builds on the initial findings and prioritizes the contributi

Optimization of the Missouri Osteochondral Preservation System for the storage of peripheral nerve allografts.

Peripheral nerve reconstruction for large-gap injuries remains limited by the shortcomings of autografts and decellularized allografts, which rarely achieve full recovery and carry donor site morbidity. This study investigated whether the Missouri Osteochondral Preservation System (MOPS) could be optimized for peripheral nerve allograft preservation by supplementing it with methylcobalamin (MOPS-N-B12) or glial-derived neurotrophic factor (MOPS-N-GDNF). Fifty rat sciatic nerves were harvested, stored in one of three solutions (MOPS, MOPS-N-B12, MOPS-N-GDNF), and analyzed after 30, 60, or 90 da

Long COVID: What is it? Who has it? What Are Treatment Resources in Missouri?

As we pass the five-year mark since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the prevalence of persistent (and often disabling) symptoms from the SARS-CoV-2 virus is estimated to be on par with the prevalence of heart disease. Yet, these Long COVID symptoms can masquerade as other conditions and/or normal aging, so it is believed that Long COVID is under-diagnosed and, as a result, under-treated. Although there is not yet a true cure for Long COVID, many patients benefit substantially from rehabilitation strategies, medications, and social support resources that are available in Missouri. The purpose of thi

Availability, accessibility, and functionality of public restrooms in the City of St. Louis, Missouri.

BACKGROUND: Individuals experiencing homelessness face daily challenges of sanitation and hygiene. These challenges are exacerbated during menstruation. AIM: We sought to assess the location, accessibility, and functionality of public restrooms in the City of St. Louis. METHODS: We compiled and mapped a list of public restrooms based on local government websites. Then, using an audit tool based on previous research and UNICEF guidelines, we audited them for accessibility, functionality, cleanliness, and infrastructure that facilitates menstrual hygiene. We also determined the service area fo
