Focal epidemic of sarcoptid (Acarina: Sarcoptidae) mite infestation in an insular population of white-footed mice.

The abrupt and focal emergence of an infestation of sarcoptid mites was documented during long-term studies of populations of the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), on Nantucket Island, MA. From 1985 to 1996, > 1,000 trap nights were recorded each year in 2 permanently situated sampling grids that were sampled monthly from April through November. In April 1995, prominent excrescences were first noted on the pinnae of mice trapped solely from 1 of the 2 sites. Histopathology of the lesions suggested infestation with Notoedres spp. Of 140 unique captures of mice during 1995-19

Laboratory and field evaluation of an autoinoculation device as a tool to manage poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, infestations with Beauveria bassiana.

The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, is a cosmopolitan ectoparasite in hens and has been considered an important threat to the egg production industry. This study evaluated an alternative to manage poultry red mite populations as a complement to conventional chemical treatments and other control strategies in poultry houses. A simple autoinoculation device prepared with corrugated cardboard (CB) or loofah sponge (LS) as inert supports to anchor Beauveria bassiana conidia was used to aggregate and infect mites from infested poultry houses. In the laboratory, mites gathered inside the tra

Genetic parameters for welfare, infestation level, and inflammatory response traits in cage-free laying hens experimentally infested with northern fowl mites (Ornithonyssus sylviarum).

Northern fowl mite (NFM) infestation in laying hens remains an important economic and welfare challenge within North American cage-free egg production systems. Controlled challenge trials provide a framework for generating standardized phenotypes of host response. Therefore, our objectives were to quantify phenotypic variability and estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters for indicators of hen welfare, mite burden, and skin response traits following an experimental NFM challenge. A total of 1030 laying hens were infested at 24 weeks of age (WOA) and evaluated at 26, 30, and 40-

Efficacy and safety of afoxolaner (NexGard®) in a collection of captive-bred lizards for the treatment and control of mite infestation.

Lizards and other reptiles are increasingly gaining popularity as pets worldwide. These animals may be commonly parasitized by species of mites such as Ophionyssus natricis, which are deleterious, also because of their role as vectors of pathogens, including zoonotic ones. Treatment options are limited and may not be completely resolutive or safe. The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard®; Boehringer Ingelheim, Germany) in a collection of mite-infested captive-bred lizards that were housed in mixed enclosures with other reptile classes, in a zoological par

Comparison of efficacy of ivermectin and doramectin against mange mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) in naturally infested rabbits in Turkey.

The authors used 14 New Zealand rabbits (5 naturally infested rabbits and 9 in-contact rabbits) for Sarcoptes scabiei treatment in this study. Signs, such as itchy ears, eyes, tail and abdominal skin, alopecia and pyoderma, were considered to be the cause of these disorders. Infested rabbits were grouped according to the intensity of S. scabiei infestation (low, medium and high). Each group was then divided into two subgroups; in one subgroup the rabbits received ivermectin (1%) and, in the other, doramectin (1%). All subgroups received a subcutaneous injection at a dosage of 400 microg/kg bod

Infestation of sheep with Psoroptes ovis, the sheep scab mite, results in recruitment of Foxp3(+) T cells into the dermis.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a central role in maintenance of immune homeostasis by controlling harmful immune responses to inappropriate antigens and are thought to play a key role in modulating hypersensitivity reactions. Infestation of sheep with Psoroptes ovis results in a pronounced cutaneous hypersensitivity-type response, which appears to be crucial for mite survival. We hypothesize that (i) Tregs are involved in sheep scab lesions and (ii) Treg responses may crucially affect lesion development and subsequent mite survival. Foxp3 is a key transcription factor required for generation

A qualitative model of mortality in honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies infested with tracheal mites (Acarapis woodi).

The tracheal mite has been associated with colony deaths worldwide since the mite was first discovered in 1919. Yet controversy about its role in honey bee colony mortality has existed since that time. Other pathogens such as bacteria and viruses have been suggested as the cause of colony deaths as well as degenerative changes in individual honey bees. Using data from published work we developed a qualitative mortality model to explain colony mortality due to tracheal mite infestation in the field. Our model suggests that colonies of tracheal-mite infested honey bees, with no other pathogens p

Detection of spider mite infestation via hyperspectral imaging and deep neural networks with spatial-spectral attention.

Early detection of spider mite emergence is highly challenging due to the lack of visible symptoms and subtle physiological changes. To address the rapid monitoring of pest mite damage, this study provided a method based on hyperspectral imaging combined with a joint spatial-spectral attention (SSA) mechanism in a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) for automated detection of pest mite infections. Leaves infested with varying degrees of spider mites Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) were captured daily to obtain multi-band spectral information of hyperspectral images. After

Hematology of Liolaemus pacha (Iguania: Liolaemidae) and its relationship with mite infestation, reproductive period and body condition.

Variations in hematological profile in reptiles can be caused by multiple factors, including parasites presence. Our goals were to identify and morphologically describe blood cells of Liolaemus pacha and analyze their relationship with sex, body condition, individual reproductive/post-reproductive period and mite infestation. Blood smear analyses do not indicate the presence of hemoparasites, suggesting that the mites Neopterygosoma do not serve as vectors for these organisms, as has been proposed for other genera of ectoparasitic mites. In post-reproductive period, there was a reduction in sp

Effect of a Drinking Water Conditioner on Stability and Efficacy of Fluralaner in Laying Hens Infested with Poultry Red Mites.

Concurrent use of a colorant during drinking water treatment could contribute to the correct application of fluralaner to poultry. The present studies therefore examined whether the blue-colored drinking water conditioner Vac-Safe has an influence on the stability of fluralaner in water and/or on its efficacy for the control of poultry red mites (PRM). Laboratory trials showed that fluralaner dissolved at various concentrations in water conditioned with Vac-Safe retained full stability for at least 27 hr at temperatures up to 40 C. Further, a field trial demonstrated that the efficacy of flura

Demodex mite infestation of unknown significance in a patient with rhinocerebral mucormycosis due to Apophysomyces elegans species complex.

Demodex mites have been reported in the past as a cause of facial rash in immunosuppressed patients. Here, we report an interesting case of possible demodicosis associated with rhinocerebral mucormycosis. The association of mites with a fungus was detected on direct microscopic examination of the scrapings of a nasal ulcer. The mite and the fungus were identified as Demodex folliculorum and Apophysomyces elegans species complex, respectively.

Increase in facial Demodex mite infestation is associated with skin barrier damage and development of sensitive skin in the Chinese population.

Severe Demodex infestation causes demodicosis, but its impact on skin function remains unclear due to a lack of sensitive detection methods. To develop an accurate, user-friendly detection method and assess the effects of Demodex on skin function. A modified squeezing/scraping method (MSS) was developed, combining mud pretreatment cleaning with traditional squeezing and scraping. Skin function was then assessed using Antera3D and a lactic acid sting test. The proposed method not only led to more consistent results compared with the traditional squeezing/scraping method, but also showed a highe

Sarcoptes scabiei infestation in llamas (Lama glama) of the Argentine Puna: Clinical study, and morphological and molecular mite identification.

Sarcoptic mange has been described in domestic South American camelids (SACs), exported to non-Andean countries, and in wild SAC in their natural habitat. Reports on the incidence of this infestation in llamas or alpacas raised in their original location, on the other hand, are missing. The present study aimed to detect and characterize cases of sarcoptic mange in herds of llamas (Lama glama) raised in the high plateau region (Puna) of the province of Jujuy, Argentina. Mange-compatible lesions were found in 2 out of 45 examined llama herds, in which 7 and one affected animals were detected. Si
