Gluteal muscle fatty infiltration, fall risk, and mobility limitation in older women with urinary incontinence: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Gluteal muscle quality influences risk of falling and mobility limitation. We sought (1) to compare gluteal muscle fatty infiltration (FI) between groups of older women with urinary incontinence (UI) at risk for falling (at-risk group) and not at risk for falling (not-at-risk group), and (2) to determine correlation of gluteal FI with Timed Up and Go (TUG) and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective pilot study of gluteal FI on pelvis MRI for 19 women with UI, aged ≥ 70 years. A musculoskeletal radiologist selected axial T1-weighted

Combined Effect of Obesity and Mobility Limitation with Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes and Mortality in Chinese Elderly.

This article aims to examine the effect of mobility limitation and obesity on the risk of new incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and mortality. The design was a cohort study (n = 1075) among adults aged 60 years and older. Obesity was defined as body-mass index greater than or equal to 28 kg/m2. Mobility limitation was defined as participants scoring in the top 20% on the timed up and go test or in the slowest 20% for the 4-m walking test. The mean age of the study population was 67.4 ± 5.4 years (age range: 60-86 years), and 57.4% were women. Overall, 5.1% of women and 1.9% of men h

Impaired voluntary neuromuscular activation limits muscle power in mobility-limited older adults.

BACKGROUND: Age-related alterations of neuromuscular activation may contribute to deficits in muscle power and mobility function. This study assesses whether impaired activation of the agonist quadriceps and antagonist hamstrings, including amplitude- and velocity-dependent characteristics of activation, may explain differences in leg extension torque and power between healthy middle-aged, healthy older, and mobility-limited older adults. METHODS: Torque, power, and electromyography were recorded during maximal voluntary leg extension trials across a range of velocities on an isokinetic dynam

Supporting physical activity for mobility in older adults with mobility limitations (SuPA Mobility): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Limited mobility in older adults consistently predicts both morbidity and mortality. As individuals age, the rates of mobility disability increase from 1.0% in people aged 15-24 to 20.6% in adults over 65 years of age. Physical activity can effectively improve mobility in older adults, yet many older adults do not engage in sufficient physical activity. Evidence shows that increasing physical activity by 50 min of moderate intensity physical activity in sedentary older adults with mobility limitations can improve mobility and reduce the incidence of mobility disability. To maximize

Mobile Technologies in Infectious Disease Monitoring: Benefits and limitations.

Infectious diseases, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Zika virus, malaria, and Ebola, pose a serious threat to public health worldwide. Their impact on society can be significant, especially in the context of globalization, migration, and climate change. These diseases can spread quickly and efficiently, which requires the use of modern monitoring and control tools. In this context, mobile technologies can play a crucial role in preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases. This article will discuss both the benefits and limitations of using mobile technologies in monitoring and

Biological markers in older people at risk of mobility limitations.

Due to the progressive ageing of the worldwide population, prevention and treatment of late-life dysfunctions, including functional decline and mobility limitations, represent leading targets of scientists and clinicians, but are also receiving growing attention from governments and healthcare systems. The early identification of elderly patients more prone to physical decline represents a crucial step for establishing preventive measures. Although functional capacity can easily be assessed, the use of additional criteria that anticipate the onset of mobility limitations seems much more advant

Limited joint mobility in insulin dependent childhood diabetes.

Limited joint mobility (LJM), beginning typically in the fifth finger and moving radially, affecting interphalangeal, metacarpal-phalangeal, and large joints, is the earliest clinically apparent complication of diabetes in childhood and adolescence. It is painless and not disabling. Approximately 50% of post-adolescent patients with more than 5 years duration of diabetes are affected, with age being more important than duration of diabetes, as is the case with other complications. Growth failure is more frequent in the presence of LJM, although correlations with diabetic control have not been

Pre-Clinical Mobility Limitation (PCML) Outcomes in Rehabilitation Interventions for Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Scoping Review.

Individuals with pre-clinical mobility limitation (PCML) are at a high risk of future functional loss and progression to disability. The purpose of this scoping review was to provide a comprehensive understanding of PCML intervention studies in middle-aged and older adults. We present the interventions that have been tested or planned, describe how they have been conducted and reported, identify the knowledge gaps in current literature, and make recommendations about future research directions. An initial search of 2,291 articles resulted in 14 articles that met criteria for inclusion. Finding

Association between low level of physical activity and mobility limitation in older adults: evidence from the SABE study.

Several studies are limited by verifying the level of physical activity with questionnaires and not through objective measurement in older adults. This article aims to analyze the association between a low level of physical activity with accelerometry) and mobility limitation in older adults. A population-based cross-sectional study conducted with 543 older adults. Multiple regression analysis was performed using hierarchical analysis, grouping the variables into two blocks ordered according to the precedence with which they acted on the outcomes. Among the evaluated older adults, 13.7% presen

Vitamin K Status and Mobility Limitation and Disability in Older Adults: The Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin K has been implicated in chronic diseases associated with increased risk for mobility disability, such as osteoarthritis and cardiovascular disease. However, the association between vitamin K status and mobility disability is unknown. Therefore, we examined the association between vitamin K status and incident mobility disability in the Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study. METHODS: Plasma phylloquinone (vitamin K1) was categorized as <0.5, 0.5-<1.0 and ≥1.0 nmol/L (n = 1,323, 48% male). Plasma ucMGP, which increases when vitamin K status is low, was measured in 716 p

Effects of line dancing on physical function and perceived limitation in older adults with self-reported mobility limitations.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults with mobility limitations are at greater risk for aging-related declines in physical function. Line dancing is a popular form of exercise that can be modified, and is thus feasible for older adults with mobility limitations. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of 8 weeks of line dancing on balance, muscle strength, lower extremity function, endurance, gait speed, and perceived mobility limitations. METHODS: An experimental design randomly assigned older adults to either an 8-week line dancing or usual care group. The convenience sample cons

Midlife work ability and mobility limitation in old age among non-disability and disability retirees--a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the wellbeing and mobility limitation of older disability retirees. Personal and environmental factors, such as time spent in working life, may either exacerbate or mitigate the onset of mobility limitation in general population. We aimed to study perceived midlife work ability as a determinant of self-reported mobility limitation in old age among municipal employees who transitioned into non-disability and disability retirement. METHODS: 4329 participants of the Finnish Longitudinal Study of Municipal Employees (FLAME) had retired during January 1985 and Jul

Anthropometric Cut Points for Definition of Sarcopenia Based on Incident Mobility and Physical Limitation in Older Chinese People.

BACKGROUND: The Foundation of the National Institutes for Health (FNIH) Sarcopenia Project derived cut points in appendicular lean mass (ALM) and grip strength, in relation to mobility limitation defined as a walking speed less than 0.8 m/s. METHODS: Using data from the Mr and Ms Os cohort of 4,000 community-dwelling Chinese men and women aged 65 years and older and a similar data-driven approach, we examined whether the cutoff values are the same for Chinese people using baseline walking speed, incident physical limitation, and incident slow walking speed at 4 years. Physical limitation was

Racial and educational disparities in mobility limitation among older women: what is the role of modifiable risk factors?

OBJECTIVES: This research explores whether modifiable risk factors (MRFs) are potential mediators and/or moderators of racial/ethnic and educational mobility limitation disparities among older women. METHOD: Utilizing Waves 2-9 (1994-2008) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), discrete-time event history models with multiple competing events were estimated using multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS: Black women were more likely to develop mobility limitation relative to White women. This disparity was partially mediated by body mass index. Educational disparities were also observed,
