Sunflower by-products valorization: Chemical characterization, modeling, and thermodynamic study.

Considering a circular economy, this study explores the valorization of sunflower by-products. Extraction kinetics of chlorogenic acid (CGA) were investigated from sunflower meal (SM) and hulls (SH) using pressurized water extraction (PWE) at different temperatures (120-160 °C). Chemical characterization, kinetic modeling (reaction, diffusion, and coupled extraction-transformation-based models), and thermodynamic analysis elucidated the mass-transfer mechanisms involved. The optimal conditions (120 °C, S/L 1/100, 15 min) yielded 33.61 and 11.56 mg/g dry matter for SM and SH, respectively, wher

Electrodiffusion active pump model with asymmetric immersed chemical potentials.

Electrodiffusion is essential in understanding the mechanisms of electrophysiology. Active exchange pumps are critical regarding volume homeostasis, and are also significant in the mechanisms of cell division, growth, and apoptosis. In the formalism of the immersed boundary (IB) method, we replace classical interface conditions across the membrane with regularized chemical potentials to control the permeation of each ionic species governed by the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation. In asymmetry, to regulate ionic transport, continuous chemical potential barriers are augmented with energetic gradie

The Role of Autophagy in Chemical Proteasome Inhibition Model of Retinal Degeneration.

We recently demonstrated that chemical proteasome inhibition induced inner retinal degeneration, supporting the pivotal roles of the ubiquitin-proteasome system in retinal structural integrity maintenance. In this study, using beclin1-heterozygous (Becn1-Het) mice with autophagic dysfunction, we tested our hypothesis that autophagy could be a compensatory retinal protective mechanism for proteasomal impairment. Despite the reduced number of autophagosome, the ocular tissue morphology and intraocular pressure were normal. Surprisingly, Becn1-Het mice experienced the same extent of retinal degen

Ex vivo modeling of chemical synergy in prenatal kidney cystogenesis.

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) drives genetic polycystic kidney disease (PKD) cystogenesis. Yet within certain PKD families, striking differences in disease severity exist between affected individuals, and genomic and/or environmental modifying factors have been evoked to explain these observations. We hypothesized that PKD cystogenesis is accentuated by an aberrant fetal milieu, specifically by glucocorticoids. The extent and nature of cystogenesis was assessed in explanted wild-type mouse embryonic metanephroi, using 8-Br-cAMP as a chemical to mimic genetic PKD and the glucocorticoid

Evaluation of the chemical model of vestibular lesions induced by arsanilate in rats.

Several animal models of vestibular deficits that mimic the human pathology phenotype have previously been developed to correlate the degree of vestibular injury to cognate vestibular deficits in a time-dependent manner. Sodium arsanilate is one of the most commonly used substances for chemical vestibular lesioning, but it is not well described in the literature. In the present study, we used histological and functional approaches to conduct a detailed exploration of the model of vestibular lesions induced by transtympanic injection of sodium arsanilate in rats. The arsanilate-induced damage w

Phosphate complexation model and its implications for chemical phosphorus removal.

A phosphate complexation model is developed, in an attempt to understand the mechanistic basis of chemically mediated phosphate removal. The model presented here is based on geochemical reaction modeling techniques and uses known surface reactions possible on hydrous ferric oxide (HFO). The types of surface reactions and their reaction stoichiometry and binding energies (logK values) are taken from literature models of phosphate interactions with iron oxides. The most important modeling parameter is the proportionality of converting moles of precipitated HFO to reactive site density. For well-

Chemical and biomechanical characterization of hyperhomocysteinemic bone disease in an animal model.

BACKGROUND: Classical homocystinuria is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) deficiency and characterized by distinctive alterations of bone growth and skeletal development. Skeletal changes include a reduction in bone density, making it a potentially attractive model for the study of idiopathic osteoporosis. METHODS: To investigate this aspect of hyperhomocysteinemia, we supplemented developing chicks (n = 8) with 0.6% dl-homocysteine (hCySH) for the first 8 weeks of life in comparison to controls (n = 10), and studied biochemical, biomechanical and mor

Ricinine-elicited seizures. A novel chemical model of convulsive seizures.

The present investigation introduces ricinine-elicited seizures as a novel chemical model of convulsive seizure. Ricinine, a neutral alkaloid obtained from the plant Ricinus communis, induces seizures when administered to mice at doses higher than 20 mg/kg. Animals presenting seizures showed a marked preconvulsive phase followed by short duration hind limb myoclonus, respiratory spasms, and death. The lethal nature of ricinine seizures is also pointed out as a good model to study the events causing death in clonic seizures, particularly those related to respiratory spasms, which are also obser

A rat model of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: targeting chemical carcinogens.

BACKGROUND: Current experimental models of pancreatic cancer either fail to reproduce the ductal phenotype or cause simultaneous cancers in other organs also. To develop an animal of pancreatic cancer that accurately mimics the human condition, we restricted carcinogenic exposure to the pancreas and specifically targeted ductal epithelial cells. Three different carcinogens were either implanted directly into the pancreas or infused into the pancreatic duct, with or without near-total pancreatectomy (as a means of inducing pancreatic ductal cell proliferation). METHODS: Groups of male Sprague-

A kinin model of mediation for food and chemical sensitivities: biobehavioral implications.

The plasma peptide hormone bradykinin is hypothesized to be a major mediator of the multiple-system functional symptomatology of adverse food and other chemical reactions. It is postulated that native foods as organic chemicals could act cumulatively with other stresses to mobilize directly the kinin-forming enzyme system.

Chemical mixtures of pesticides: A review of the recent findings with the zebrafish model.

The presence of pesticide mixtures in the aquatic environment is widely recognized as a cause for concern, given their inherent toxicity and the possibility of additive or synergistic interactions that may amplify the ecological risk. In this review, we focus on the use of zebrafish (Danio rerio), a vertebrate model widely used in biological research as well as in ecotoxicology assessment. The aim of this work is to critically investigate the recent findings on pesticide mixture toxicity published between 2020 and 2024, with studies systematically collected from Embase, PubMed Medline, Google

Chemical alteration of UO2 micro-particles in model lung systems.

Uranium dioxide (UO2) particles can be released from mines, nuclear fuel manufacturing, reactor accidents, and weapons use. They pose inhalation risks, yet their behavior in the human lung remains poorly understood. This study investigates the long-term chemical alteration and dissolution of µm-sized UO2 particles in two model lung fluids: Simulated Lung Fluid (SLF) and Artificial Lysosomal Fluid (ALF), representing extracellular and intracellular lung environments, respectively. Particles were exposed to each fluid at 37°C for up to 180 days (SLF) and 900 days (ALF). In SLF, UO2 showed low ap

Chemical-induced heart defects using a transgenic zebrafish model.

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are common birth defects attributed to genetic and environmental factors, such as pharmaceuticals and chemicals. Identifying modifiable environmental factors and understanding their impact on heart development is crucial for mitigating chemical-induced CHDs. Given the increasing number of chemical agents, efficient high-throughput systems are essential to evaluate their teratogenic potential during cardiovascular development, which is a major concern for chemical safety. In this study, we developed 3 transgenic zebrafish reporter lines, myl7:EGFP, kdrl:mRFP, and

Modelling chemical processes in explicit solvents with machine learning potentials.

Solvent effects influence all stages of the chemical processes, modulating the stability of intermediates and transition states, as well as altering reaction rates and product ratios. However, accurately modelling these effects remains challenging. Here, we present a general strategy for generating reactive machine learning potentials to model chemical processes in solution. Our approach combines active learning with descriptor-based selectors and automation, enabling the construction of data-efficient training sets that span the relevant chemical and conformational space. We apply this strate

Toward a Psychological Model of Chemical Coping with Opioids in Cancer Care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES AFTER PARTICIPATING IN THIS CME ACTIVITY, THE PSYCHIATRIST SHOULD BE BETTER ABLE TO: • Outline the risk factors involved with opioid accessibility in patients receiving treatment for cancer.• Identify factors to address in order to mitigate risk for opioid misuse during cancer care. ABSTRACT: Most patients with advanced cancer receive treatment for related pain. Opioid accessibility, however, is a risk factor for misuse, which can present care challenges and quality-of-life concerns. There is a lack of consistent universal screening prior to initiation of opioid prescribin

A Combination of Surgical and Chemical Induction in a Rabbit Model for Osteoarthritis of the Knee.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate animal models of osteoarthritis (OA) are essential to develop new treatment modalities for OA. A combination of surgical and chemical induction could be appropriate for OA models. METHODS: Rabbit knee OA models developed by surgical induction (anterior cruciate ligament transection [ACLT]), chemical induction (monosodium iodoacetate [MIA] injection), and a combination of both were compared to assess compositional and structural destruction of the knee joint. Twenty-one New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups to induce OA (group 1: ACLT, n = 3; gro

Modeling chemical effects on breast cancer: the importance of the microenvironment in vitro.

Accumulating evidence suggests that our ability to predict chemical effects on breast cancer is limited by a lack of physiologically relevant in vitro models; the typical in vitro breast cancer model consists of the cancer cell and excludes the mammary microenvironment. As the effects of the microenvironment on cancer cell behavior becomes more understood, researchers have called for the integration of the microenvironment into in vitro chemical testing systems. However, given the complexity of the microenvironment and the variety of platforms to choose from, identifying the essential paramete

Development of an In Vitro Human Thyroid Microtissue Model for Chemical Screening.

Thyroid hormones (TH) are essential for regulating a number of diverse physiological processes required for normal growth, development, and metabolism. The US EPA Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP) has identified several molecular thyroid targets relevant to hormone synthesis dynamics that have been adapted to high-throughput screening (HTS) assays to rapidly evaluate the ToxCast/Tox21 chemical inventories for potential thyroid disrupting chemicals (TDCs). The uncertainty surrounding the specificity of active chemicals identified in these screens and the relevance to phenotypic effec

Two-stage model of chemically induced hepatocellular carcinoma in mouse.

The aim of this study was to develop an efficient and reproducible mouse model for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) research and assess the expression of two proto-oncogenes (c-myc and N-ras) and tumor suppressor gene p53 in the carcinogenic process. In this study, we found that diethylnitrosamine initiation with CCl4 and ethanol promotion could induce a short-term, two-stage liver carcinogenesis model in male BALB/c mice, the process of hepatocarcinogenesis including liver damage, liver necrosis/cell death, liver inflammation, liver proliferation, liver hyperplasia, liver steatosis, and liver c
