Modeling motorcycle helmet use in Iowa: evidence from six roadside observational surveys.

This paper investigates the influence of type of roadway, weather conditions and other factors on motorcycle helmet use rates in Iowa. Using data from six statewide roadside observational surveys of motorcycle helmet use, a bivariate probit model is estimated. The applied methodological approach allows for potentially interrelated choices of motorcycle helmet use by drivers and passengers to be examined. The estimation results can enhance our understanding of other factors than state helmet laws which correlate with motorcycle rider helmet use, and the effect that the presence of a passenger h

Institutional quality, aid flows, and malaria burden: a geospatial analysis of sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for approximately 95 percent of global malaria deaths despite extensive interventions. Significant disparities persist in disease burden across countries, with some achieving remarkable progress while others experiencing persistently high transmission rates, suggesting factors beyond resource availability influence disease control effectiveness. This study examines the relationship between institutional quality, development aid flows, and malaria burden across 38 sub-Saharan African countries during 2

Costs associated with non-medical switching from originator to biosimilar etanercept in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the UK.

Aims: To estimate the cost impact of non-medical switching from originator to biosimilar etanercept in stable patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the UK. Materials and methods: A cohort-based decision tree model was developed with a 1-year time horizon. The model population included patients with stable RA (patients who responded to originator etanercept treatment with no treatment changes in the previous 6 months). Patients could undergo a non-medical switch to a biosimilar and then switch treatment again, if medically required, after 3-6 months. Data on the proportion of patients swit

Regulatory and Health Technology Assessment Considerations for Disease-Modifying Drugs in Alzheimer's Disease.

Although there are a growing number of well-reported, late-stage clinical trial failures in Alzheimer's disease, the introduction of a disease-modifying therapy within the next 5 years may be anticipated. These treatments are likely to target Alzheimer's disease in the earlier disease stages, unlike drugs that are currently available that treat symptoms of moderate-to-severe dementia. Therefore, there is a need to establish a consensus on regulatory and health technology assessment requirements for Alzheimer's disease, as a new drug will need to undergo regulatory and health technology assessm

Economic burden of mucormycosis in the United States: can a vaccine be cost-effective?

Mucormycosis is a life-threatening infection which causes unacceptably high morbidity and mortality despite treatment. Therefore, a vaccine to prevent mucormycosis is desirable. A major barrier to developing an anti-mucormycosis vaccine is the perception that such a vaccine would not be cost-effective to deploy because the disease is rare. We used data from a recent retrospective study to calculate the annual cost to the US healthcare system caused by mucormycosis infections. We created a model to estimate the cost-efficacy of a niche, anti-mucormycosis vaccine deployed in a targeted manner to

Estimation of the shadow prices of pollutants with production/environment inefficiency taken into account: a nonparametric directional distance function approach.

This paper deals with the estimation of the shadow prices of pollutants with a nonparametric directional distance function approach, where the inefficiency involved in the production process is taken into account unlike the previous studies. The directional vector, which is critical to the estimation and subject to the criterion for an appropriate efficiency rule proposed here, is calculated by using the annual plans of power plants in terms of production and environment. In the empirical study for Korea's electric power industry during the period of 1990-1995, we find that the average shadow

Selecting correct functional form in consumption function: Analysis of energy demand at household level.

In the estimation of demand functions for energy resources, parametric econometric models of energy demand are commonly used to predict future energy needs. The functional forms commonly assumed in parametric energy demand models include linear functional forms, log-linear forms, trans-log models, and an almost ideal demand system. It is frequently debated which is the "best" functional form to employ in order to accurately represent the underlying relationships between the demand for various energy resources and explanatory variables such as energy prices, income, and other demographic factor

Analysis of effects of meteorological variables on dengue incidence in Bangladesh using VAR and Granger causality approach.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a serious public health issue in Bangladesh, where its incidence rises with the monsoon. Meteorological variables are believed to be responsible factors among others. Therefore, this study examines the effects of meteorological variables (temperature, rainfall, and humidity) on dengue incidence in Bangladesh. While previous studies have examined the relationship between dengue and meteorological variables using single model approaches, this study employs advanced econometric techniques to capture dynamic interactions. Furthermore, in the case of Bangladesh, this typ

The impact of environmental factors on public engagement on WeChat in China's national parks- a socio-cognitive analysis.

Based on social cognitive theory and engagement hierarchy structure, this study aims to investigate how environmental factors influence public interaction behavior on WeChat, the official social media platform used by China's national parks (NPs). Using monthly panel data from July 2018 to December 2023, this research employs advanced econometric models such as two-way fixed effects, Least Squares Dummy Variable (LSDV), and Difference Generalized Method of Moments (D-GMM) estimators to analyze the complex dynamics of public interaction and messaging. The results highlight the significant posit

Evaluating discrete choice experiment willingness to pay [DCE-WTP] analysis and relative social willingness to pay [RS-WTP] analysis in a health technology assessment of a treatment for an ultra-rare childhood disease [CLN2].

BACKGROUND: Conventional cost-effectiveness analysis [CEA] using cost per QALY thresholds may counteract other incentives introduced to foster development of treatments for rare and ultra-rare diseases. Therefore, alternative economic evaluation methods were explored, namely Discrete Choice Experiment Willingness to Pay (DCE-WTP) and Relative Social Willingness to Pay (RS-WTP), to value interventions for an ultra-rare childhood disease, Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Treatment for CLN2 was valued from a citizen's ('social') perspective using DCE-WTP

Spirit of the Hawk: Colonial intensity and alcohol use disorders across 178 countries.

Qualitative research links colonial history to alcohol-related harms in specific populations, and econometric studies show that colonial institutions shape long-run health trajectories, yet no study has connected these literatures by testing whether colonial intensity predicts national-level alcohol outcomes in a spatially explicit panel framework. We construct a colonial intensity composite (the duration of colonial rule weighted by colony type-extractive versus settler) from COLDAT 3.0 and estimate panel Spatial Durbin Models on 178 countries over 21 years (2000-2020), using geographic conti

Valuing human leptospirosis prevention using the opportunity cost of labor.

Leptospirosis is a serious public health concern in the Philippines, not only because of its increasing incidence rate, but also because of its significant health and economic impacts. Despite its relatively high seroprevalence, knowledge on the economic burden of disease, particularly on the value that the society places on disease prevention remains limited. Obtaining such information is important within the context of public health policy. This study was conducted in Metro Manila to determine the economic burden of leptospirosis, by asking respondents about their willingness to contribute t

Modeling the cost of influenza: the impact of missing costs of unreported complications and sick leave.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the economic impact of influenza is complicated because the disease may have non-specific symptoms, and many patients with influenza are registered with other diagnoses. Furthermore, in some countries like Norway, employees can be on paid sick leave for a specified number of days without a doctor's certificate ("self-reported sick leave") and these sick leaves are not registered. Both problems result in gaps in the existing literature: costs associated with influenza-related illness and self-reported sick leave are rarely included. The aim of this study was to improve es

A preliminary investigation of the effects of restrictions on Medicaid funding for abortions on female STD rates.

There is evidence in the economics literature that restrictions on Medicaid funding for abortion reduces the demand for abortion. The unresolved question is whether such restrictions also increase safe sex (that is, pregnancy avoidance) behavior among women. This study explores that issue using state-level gonorrhea rates among women for 1975-1995. The rationale is that sexual behavior that leads to greater risk of accidental pregnancies is likely to be highly correlated with sexual behavior leading to greater risk of STD infection. Since gonorrhea has an incubation period of about a week, and

How do storm surge disaster losses affect economic development?: Perspectives from disaster prevention and mitigation capacity.

Storm surge disasters have caused devastating losses to coastal areas, making disaster prevention and mitigation capacity (DPMC) critical in promoting high-quality and sustainable economic development. In this paper, the systematic construction of a comprehensive index of storm surge disaster losses (SSDLs) and DPMC in China is described respectively. Then, panel fixed effect and threshold models are established to explore the relationship between SSDLs and economic growth, in particular, the moderating effect of DPMC. Our results reveal that, from 2006 to 2019, SSDLs exhibit an inverted N-sha

Estimating the economic burden of invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella infections in low- and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) disease is a global health concern, particularly for sub-Saharan Africa. Despite high case fatality risks, there is no vaccine available against the disease. An obstacle to vaccine development is a lack of data on the economic burden of iNTS disease in many parts of the world. The main aim of the current study is to estimate the economic burden of iNTS disease in 123 countries. METHODS: Several multivariate regression models were parameterised with the data obtained from an existing systematic literature review on the economic burden of i
