A morphologically structured model for penicillin production.

A morphologically structured model is proposed to describe penicillin production in fed-batch cultivations. The model accounts for the effects of dissolved oxygen on cell growth and penicillin production and variations in volume fractions of abiotic and biotic phases due to biomass formation. Penicillin production is considered to occur in the subapical hyphal cell compartment and to be affected by availability of glucose and oxygen. As it stands, the model provides a wide range of applicability in terms of operating conditions. The model has been tested for various conditions and has given sa

Modelling human tibia structural vibrations.

Mode shapes and natural frequencies of human long bones play an important role in the interpretation, prediction and control of their dynamic response to external mechanical loads. This paper describes an experimental and theoretical study of free vibrations in an excised human tibia. Experimentally, seven tibial natural frequencies in the range 0-3 kHz were identified through measured structural transfer functions. Theoretically, a beam type Finite Element model of a human tibia is suggested. Unknown parameters in this model are determined by a Bayesian parameter estimation approach, by which

The structural simplification of an epidemiological compartment model.

It is shown how a multicompartmental infectious disease model can be systematically examined for reduction of structural complexity. For steadystate situations, four basic rules are proposed for eliminating components of flow-lines, whole flow-lines, and compartments, plus combining compartments. An application to a typhoid fever model allows calculations to be done on a pocket calculator. The approach could be particularly important in developing countries.

Structural Characteristics of the Yunnan Deashed Lignite and Construction of the Macromolecular Structure Model.

The structural characteristics and macromolecular model of lignite are important for its effective utilization. In this paper, Yunnan (YN) lignite was taken as the study object, and deashing pretreatment was carried out to remove the influence of minerals in lignite before spectroscopic analysis. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of deashed lignite and gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) of methanol lignite extract were subsequently performed. Then, the lignite structural pa

State-Constrained SHAP Distills Polymer Property Models into Transferable Structural Rules for Fixed-Interval Screening.

Polymer informatics has accelerated data-driven prediction of polymer properties, yet accurate prediction does not directly enable discovery. Here, we introduce state-constrained SHAP (SC-SHAP), an attribution-to-rule distillation framework for fixed-interval polymer screening. Using XGBoost as the teacher, SC-SHAP reorganizes SHAP and SHAP-interaction attributions on chemically interpretable MACCS fingerprints into support-qualified structural states defined by required-present and required-absent substructures. These states provide auditable property ordering, executable structural condition

Mapping heterogeneous brain structural subtypes in alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment using normative models.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous disorder with individual variability in clinical and biological features. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents transition phase and provides a critical window for early intervention. Clinically applicable metrics for quantifying individual brain structural variations remain limited. This study aimed to delineate neuroanatomical heterogeneity and identify brain structural subtypes using individual deviation analysis. We constructed normative models of regional gray matter volume across lifespan using T1-weighted MRI data from 1185 healthy contro

Longitudinal evaluation of structural brain alterations in two established mouse models of Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) affects nearly 30% of veterans from the 1990-1991 Gulf War (GW) and is a multi-symptom illness with many neurological effects attributed to in-theater wartime chemical overexposures. Brain-focused studies have revealed persistent structural and functional alterations in veterans with GWI, including reduced volumes, connectivity, and signaling that correlate with poor cognitive and motor performance. GWI symptomology components have been recapitulated in rodent models as behavioral, neurochemical, and neuroinflammatory aberrations. However, preclinical structural imaging

Comparison of Nigella sativa- and exercise-induced models of cardiac hypertrophy: structural and electrophysiological features.

Exercise training is employed as supplementary therapeutic intervention for heart failure, due to its ability to induce physiological cardiac hypertrophy. In parallel, supplementation with Nigella sativa (N. sativa) was found to enhance myocardial function and induce cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, we aim to compare the morphological and electrophysiological changes associated with these patterns of cardiac hypertrophy and the possible changes upon administration of N. sativa to exercise-trained animals. Fifty-six adult Wistar rats were divided into: control, Nigella-treated (N), exercise-

Model selection criterion for causal parameters in structural mean models based on a quasi-likelihood.

Structural mean models (SMMs) have been proposed for estimating causal parameters in the presence of non-ignorable non-compliance in clinical trials. To obtain a valid causal estimate, we must impose several assumptions. One of these is the correct specification of the structural model. Building on Pan's work (2001, Biometrics 57, 120-125) on developing a model selection criterion for generalized estimating equations, we propose a new approach for model selection of SMMs based on a quasi-likelihood. We provide a formal model selection criterion that is an extension of Akaike's information crit

Simulation of multispecies interactions and ecosystem functions based on functional-structural plant models: a review.

Under the dual pressures of sustained global population growth and climate change, food security and agricultural sustainability are facing unprecedented challenges. Agricultural ecosystems based on the principle of multispecies coexistence have emerged as a key strategy for addressing these challenges, owing to their advantages in resource use efficiency and ecological sustainability. Functional-structural plant models (FSPMs) explicitly simulate plant growth and development through three-dimensional architectures and tightly couple these processes with the dynamic acquisition and allocation

Revealing deep evolutionary relationships between RNA viruses using predicted structural models of viral RNA polymerases.

The RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) is the only homologous gene shared among current members of the kingdom Orthornavirae in the realm Riboviria. It is therefore used as a hallmark gene to infer their evolutionary relationships and to guide their taxonomic classification. While sequence similarity between RNA viruses is often limited and sequences problematic to align, the conservation between the three-dimensional tertiary structures of viral RdRPs is notable, supporting analysis of deep evolutionary relationships. Nevertheless, the limited availability of experimental RdRP structures res

Environmental enrichment remodels brain structural and behavioral plasticity in restricted and repetitive C58 mouse models.

Restricted and repetitive behaviors are characteristic of several neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly autism spectrum disorder. While environmental enrichment has been shown to affect these behaviors, the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically explored the effects of environmental enrichment on brain structure and microstructure in C58 mice, a model of restricted and repetitive behaviors, compared to C57 control mice. Using structural magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging, we assessed regional brain volumes and microst

Correcting Structural Bias in Dynamical Models of Infectious Disease Using a Bayesian State-Space Framework.

Deterministic dynamical models are widely used in infectious disease modelling, but they often become systematically biased when key drivers such as seasonality and random environmental variation are simplified or omitted. This paper proposes a practical way to account for structural bias while preserving the underlying mechanistic model. We model the observed time series as the sum of (i) a deterministic transmission component given by a reduced Ross malaria model and (ii) a latent stochastic seasonal component that captures unresolved seasonal forcing and other unmodelled variability. The se

Machine learning models for clinical and structural knee osteoarthritis prediction: Recent advancements and future directions.

Machine learning (ML), increasingly used for predictive modeling, has seen rapid growth in osteoarthritis (OA) research over the past decade. This review highlights recent advances in ML model development across four OA outcome domains: clinical, structural (radiographic and MRI-based), and surgical endpoints, each addressing different but interrelated aspects of the disease. For clinical outcomes, ML studies have focused on predicting changes in patient-reported clinical measures (e.g., pain and function). Radiographic OA has been characterized using deep learning (DL) models, and ML approach

Structural changes of the multifidus in animal models of intervertebral disk degeneration: a systematic review.

STUDY DESIGN: Low back pain (LBP) is a widespread clinical symptom affecting nearly all age groups and is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Degenerative changes in the spine and paraspinal tissues primarily contribute to the etiology of LBP. OBJECTIVES: We conducted this systematic review of animal models of paraspinal muscle (PSM) degeneration secondary to degenerative intervertebral disc (IVD), providing a comprehensive evaluation of PSM structural changes observed in these models at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library,

Causal inference in survival analysis using longitudinal observational data: Sequential trials and marginal structural models.

Longitudinal observational data on patients can be used to investigate causal effects of time-varying treatments on time-to-event outcomes. Several methods have been developed for estimating such effects by controlling for the time-dependent confounding that typically occurs. The most commonly used is marginal structural models (MSM) estimated using inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTW) (MSM-IPTW). An alternative, the sequential trials approach, is increasingly popular, and involves creating a sequence of "trials" from new time origins and comparing treatment initiators and non-initi

Structural and Functional Aspects of the Neurodevelopmental Gene NR2F1: From Animal Models to Human Pathology.

The assembly and maturation of the mammalian brain result from an intricate cascade of highly coordinated developmental events, such as cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Any impairment of this delicate multi-factorial process can lead to complex neurodevelopmental diseases, sharing common pathogenic mechanisms and molecular pathways resulting in multiple clinical signs. A recently described monogenic neurodevelopmental syndrome named Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf Optic Atrophy Syndrome (BBSOAS) is caused by NR2F1 haploinsufficiency. The NR2F1 gene, coding for a transcriptional regula

Learning Subject-Specific Directed Acyclic Graphs With Mixed Effects Structural Equation Models From Observational Data.

The identification of causal relationships between random variables from large-scale observational data using directed acyclic graphs (DAG) is highly challenging. We propose a new mixed-effects structural equation model (mSEM) framework to estimate subject-specific DAGs, where we represent joint distribution of random variables in the DAG as a set of structural causal equations with mixed effects. The directed edges between nodes depend on observed exogenous covariates on each of the individual and unobserved latent variables. The strength of the connection is decomposed into a fixed-effect te
