Leptospirosis is an important zoonotic disease with several maintenance host species including swine. A cross sectional survey was undertaken between January to October 2020 to investigate the prevalence of leptospirosis in farmed swine in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China. Serum samples were collected from swine on seven farms (15 swine per farm; ten multiparous sows and five twelve-week-old weaners), while kidney samples were collected from 64 swine submitted for routine post-mortem (26 farms; average 2.4 swine per farm, range 1-6). Microscopic agglutination tests

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is a key genus of parasitic protists that infect humans and other vertebrates (mammals and birds). Birds are typically infected with C. avium, C. baileyi, C. galli and/or C. meleagridis, the latter of which is recognised as being zoonotic. Stimulated by the previous finding of C. meleagridis subtypes IIIbA21G1R1, IIIbA22G1R1 and IIIbA26G1R1 in diarrhoeic children in Wuhan city and environs in Hubei Province, China, we performed a molecular epidemiological survey to explore whether these or similar subtypes might occur in farmed chickens in this province.

Infections with monogeneans of the Diplectanidae can limit productivity of and cause considerable health issues for fish in aquaculture. To date, 9 species of diplectanids have been reported from the Asian sea bass or barramundi Lates calcarifer (Perciformes: Latidae) in the Asia-Pacific region. This study characterised the diplectanid parasite fauna found infecting wild and farmed barramundi from 5 localities in tropical Australia, including north Queensland and Western Australia. A combination of morphometric and comparative genetic analyses of partial 28S ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA) from speci

In this report, we describe the emergence of reassorted H1N1 swine influenza virus, originated from a reassortment event between the H1N1 pandemic influenza virus (H1N1p/2009) and endemic swine influenza virus in Cuban swine population. In November 2010, a clinical respiratory outbreak was reported on a pig fattening farm in Cuba. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all the genes of one of the isolate obtained, with the exception of neuraminidase, belonged to the H1N1p/2009 cluster. This finding suggests that H1N1pdm has been established in swine and has become a reservoir of reassortment that m

An average of 70 samples were collected from 80 dairy farms in England and Wales, from cattle, co-grazed sheep, wildlife and farm wastes, to investigate prevalence, potential sources and transmission routes of Cryptosporidium. At least one positive sample was detected on 74 of the farms (92.5%) by IFAT microscopy. The prevalence in cattle was 10.2% (95% CI 9.4-11.1%), with greater prevalences detected in calf samples, especially from those under 1 month (45.1%). Young calves were also more likely to be shedding Cryptosporidium parvum and larger concentrations of oocysts, whereas older calves a

In the present study, we report the first molecular detection and identification of the ectoparasitic monogenean Neobenedenia girellae in the farmed greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) in Greece. This parasite is considered one of the most economically important ectoparasites affecting marine finfish aquaculture worldwide. The greater amberjack is an emerging species for Mediterranean aquaculture, characterized by rapid growth and high market value. During routine surveillance at a marine fish farm in the Ionian Sea, metazoan ectoparasites were collected from the sampled greater amberjack exh

OBJECTIVE: Poultry farm environments are recognized as reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria with implications for One Health. Klebsiella pneumoniae, a clinically important opportunistic pathogen, has shown rising resistance to third-generation cephalosporins, including cefotaxime. However, data on cefotaxime-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKP) in poultry environments in Uganda remain limited. This study determined the proportion and characterized CRKP isolated from chicken farm litter in central Uganda. A retrospective study was conducted using 98 archived environmental litter samples col

BACKGROUND: Clinostomum species (spp.) are significant fish-borne zoonotic helminths worldwide, causing yellow grub disease which diminishes the quality, marketability, and productivity of infected fish stocks. Despite their veterinary and public health relevance, detailed molecular investigations of Clinostomum spp. infecting Nile tilapia in Egypt remain limited, especially in Upper Egypt. A total of 400 Nile tilapias were collected from fish farms in Sohag Governorate, Upper Egypt, and initially screened for encysted metacercariae through visual inspection and subsequent light microscopic ex

Q fever, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii, is a widespread zoonotic disease and a notifiable condition in 25 European Union countries. Dairy cattle are important reservoirs, and infection can pose a risk to both animal and human health. The aim of this study was to assess the temporal and spatial prevalence of C. burnetii in dairy farms in Latvia. In the period of January 2016-December 2018, seroprevalence was estimated. Between January 2022 and September 2023, bulk tank milk and pooled milk samples were collected from 5.81% of Latvian dairy farms and analyzed f

Transmission of influenza A viruses (IAVs) between pigs and humans can trigger pandemics but more often cease as isolated infections without further spread in the new host species population. In Denmark, a major pig-producing country, the first two detections of human infections with swine-like IAVs were reported in 2021. These zoonotic IAVs were reassortants of the H1N1 pandemic 2009 lineage ("H1N1pdm09," H1 lineage 1A, clade 1A.3.3.2) introduced to swine farms in Denmark through humans approximately 11 years prior. However, predicting the likelihood and outcome of such IAV spillovers is chal

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a zoonotic disease that poses significant risks to both livestock productivity and human health. This is the first molecular and epidemiological study of C. burnetii infections on a Boer goat farm in South Korea, encompassing clinical cases in animals and humans, as well as environmental contamination. The investigation was initiated following abortion cases at a farm that co-raised Boer goats and cattle. Samples-including vaginal swabs, aborted fetuses, blood, tissues, feces, dust, and soil-were tested using PCR, confirming C. burnetii infection from m

H9N2 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) affect both poultry and humans on a global level, and they are especially prevalent in Egypt. In this study, we sequenced the entire genome of AIV H9N2 isolated from chickens in Egypt in 2021, using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology. Phylogenetic analysis of the resulting sequences showed that the studied strain was generally monophyletic and grouped within the G1 sublineage of the Eurasian lineage. Four segments (polymerase basic 2 [PB2], polymerase basic 1 [PB1], polymerase acidic [PA], and non-structural [NS]) were related to Egyptian genotype I

The order Piroplasmida, including the genera Babesia, Cytauxzoon, and Theileria is often referred to as piroplasmids and comprises of dixenous hemoprotozoans transmitted by ticks to a mammalian or avian host. Although piroplasmid infections are usually asymptomatic in wild animals, in domestic animals, they cause serious or life-threatening consequences resulting in fatalities. Piroplasmids are particularly notorious for the enormous economic loss they cause worldwide in livestock production, the restrictions they pose on horse trade, and the negative health impact they have on dogs and cats.

Microcotyle sebastis is a gill monogenean ectoparasite that causes serious problems in the mariculture of the Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. In this study, we isolated the parasite from fish farms along the coasts of Tongyeong, South Korea in 2016, and characterized its infection, morphology and molecular phylogeny. The prevalence of M. sebastis infection during the study period ranged from 46.7% to 96.7%, and the mean intensity was 2.3 to 31.4 ind./fish, indicating that the fish was constantly exposed to parasitic infections throughout the year. Morphological observations under light a

In this study, eight H9N2 IAVs were isolated from infected diseased, farmed raccoon dogs and arctic foxes. Eight genes shared 98.6%-100% identity among the isolates possessing a PSRSSR/GL motif at the HA cleavage site, which is same as the motif of G1 and Y280 lineages of H9N2 IAVs. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the HA genes of the eight isolates clustered with Y280-like viruses, whereas the NA genes belonged to F/98-like sublineage. Interestingly, the NS, NP, PB2 and PA genes of the isolates were closely related to H7N9 IAVs. This is the first evidence for isolation of H9N2 IAVs from

Tick-borne diseases have become a world health concern, emerging with increasing incidence in recent decades. Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae are tick-borne pathogens recognized as important agents of human tick-borne diseases worldwide. In this study, 88 adult ticks from the species Hyalomma anatolicum, Rhipicephalus annulatus, Rh. bursa, Rh. sanguineus sensu lato, and Rh. turanicus, were collected from farm ruminants in Lebanon, and SFG rickettsiae were molecularly identified and characterized in these ticks. The screening showed a prevalence of 68% for Rickettsia spp., including the s

Chlamydia and Chlamydia-like bacteria are well known to infect several organisms and may cause a wide range of diseases, particularly in ruminants. To gain insight into the prevalence and diversity of these intracellular bacteria, we applied a pan-Chlamydiales real-time PCR to 1,134 veterinary samples taken from 130 Tunisian ruminant herds. The true adjusted animal population-level prevalence was 12.9% in cattle, against 8.7% in sheep. In addition, the true adjusted herd-level prevalence of Chlamydiae was 80% in cattle and 25.5% in sheep. Chlamydiales from three family-level lineages were dete
