PURPOSE: To evaluate the practice patterns in the use of glaucoma drainage devices (GDD) and cyclodestruction among consultant ophthalmologists in Australia and New Zealand.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 22-part questionnaire regarding GDD implantation and cyclodestruction practices was sent to all ophthalmologists registered with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 2008 by post or e-mail.

Since the advent of trabeculectomy with antimetabolite therapy, there have been few changes in the surgical management of glaucoma. This is the first report of a new technique, nonpenetrating trabeculectomy with placement of a collagen drainage device. The procedure facilitates aqueous drainage without entering the human eye. Meticulous surgical dissection of the trabecular meshwork is required with creation of an external filtration tract and subscleral positioning of a collagen device to facilitate aqueous drainage. Glaucoma drainage devices (GDD) are used for patients with secondary glaucoma, such as uveitic or neovascular glaucoma, which is uncontrolled under local therapy. They are also used in patients with conjunctival scarring, for example after a previous vitrectomy or after unsuccessful previous glaucoma surgery, such as trabeculectomy. BACKGROUND: In glaucoma associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), medical treatment often fails to control intraocular pressure, thus requiring surgical intervention that may result in serious complications.
METHODS: Eighteen consecutive patients with SWS were reviewed retrospectively at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital. An intraocular pressure less than 20 mm Hg, plus stable optic nerve cup-to-disc ratio and corneal diameter (or visual fields where appropriate), were parameters chosen to indicate that the glaucoma was being controlled.

This study evaluated B-scan ultrasound as a technique for assessing glaucoma drainage device (GDD) patency/function in refractory pediatric glaucoma. We retrospectively evaluated 70 eyes of 52 patients after Ahmed (n = 40 eyes), Baerveldt (n = 27 eyes) and Molteno (n = 5 eyes) GDD implantation; 2 eyes each had 2 GDDs. Median age was 6.5 years.
