New chemical agents based on adamantane-monoterpene conjugates against orthopoxvirus infections.

Currently, the spectrum of agents against orthopoxviruses, in particular smallpox, is very narrow. Despite the fact that smallpox is well controlled, there is, for many reasons, a real threat of epidemics associated with this or a similar virus. In order to search for new low molecular weight orthopoxvirus inhibitors, a series of amides combining adamantane and monoterpene moieties were synthesized using 1- and 2-adamantanecarboxylic acids as well as myrtenic, citronellic and camphorsulfonic acids as acid components. The produced compounds exhibited high activity against the vaccinia virus (an

Induction of allergic contact dermatitis by astigmatid mite-derived monoterpene, alpha-acaridial.

alpha-Acaridial [2(E)-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)butenedial] is a novel monoterpene secreted from the house dust mites. Because of its molecular nature of a highly reactive, small lipidic compound, we addressed whether alpha-acaridial might function as a haptenic allergen that induced allergic contact dermatitis. Mice sensitized with alpha-acaridial were challenged by the same antigen on the ear skin. After 2 days, significant ear swelling with a prominent infiltration of CD4(+) T lymphocytes was observed. In vitro, alpha-acaridial exhibited an outstanding ability to quickly interact with and chemic

Structure-antinociceptive activity studies of incarvillateine, a monoterpene alkaloid from Incarvillea sinensis.

Incarvillateine (1), a new monoterpene alkaloid carrying a characteristic cyclobutane ring, has been found to show significant antinociceptive activity in a formalin-induced pain model in mice. To investigate the correlation between its structure and antinociceptive activity, and especially to study whether a cyclobutane ring is necessary or not for expression of activity, we evaluated the antinociceptive activity of two constructive units of incarvillateine, such as a monoterpene unit (incarvilline, 3) and a phenylpropanoid unit (ferulic acid, 2) in the formalin test, and compared activity of

Pine monoterpenes drive growth, competition, and volatile metabolism of symbiotic fungi associated with the mountain pine beetle.

Monoterpenes are key conifer defences that shape interactions between the mountain pine beetle and its symbiotic phytopathogenic fungi. Conifer monoterpenes vary both within and between tree species, yet how this variation affects symbiotic fungi remains poorly understood. We tested how monoterpene blends from three geographically distinct subspecies of Pinus contorta, including subsp. contorta, latifolia, and murrayana can affect the growth and volatile emissions of two fungal symbionts, Grosmannia clavigera and Ophiostoma montium, of the mountain pine beetle. We conducted a factorial experim

Monoterpenes-containing PEGylated transfersomes for enhancing joint cavity drug delivery evidenced by CLSM and double-sited microdialysis.

The synovial tissues are natural sites of drug delivery for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Our previous study showed that mixed monoterpenes edge-activated PEGylated transfersomes (MMPTs) could significantly enhance the percutaneous absorption of sinomenine (SIN), an anti-inflammation drug. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of MMPTs for delivery of SIN to the synovial tissues in joint cavities. To this end, conventional liposomes (LPSs) were used as a reference. Transmission electron microscope, constant pressure extrusion method, and differential scanning calorime

Airborne exposure of Rhizobium leguminosarum strain E20-8 to volatile monoterpenes: Effects on cells challenged by cadmium.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are produced by plants, fungi, bacteria and animals. These compounds are metabolites originated mainly in catabolic reactions and can be involved in biological processes. In this study, the airborne effects of five monoterpenes (α-pinene, limonene, eucalyptol, linalool, and menthol) on the growth and oxidative status of the rhizobial strain Rhizobium leguminosarum E20-8 were studied, testing the hypothesis that these VOCs could influence Rhizobium growth and tolerance to cadmium. The tested monoterpenes were reported to have diverse effects, such as antibacter

Ca²⁺ signal contributing to the synthesis and emission of monoterpenes regulated by light intensity in Lilium 'siberia'.

The floral scent is an important part of plant volatile compounds, and is influenced by environmental factors. The emission of monoterpenes of Lilium 'siberia' is regulated by light intensity, but the mechanism is large unknown. In this study, the expression of Li-mTPS, a monoterpene synthase gene in the tepals of Lilium 'siberia', and net Ca(2+) flux were investigated after exposure to different levels of light intensity (0, 100, 300, 600, 1000, and 1500 μmol m(-2) s(-1)). Moreover the effect of LaCl3 and ethylene glycol-bis-(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA) on the Li-mTPS

Structurally diverse monoterpene indole alkaloids with vasorelaxant activities from the branches of Alstonia scholaris.

Seven undescribed monoterpene indole alkaloids alstoscholarinines A‒G, along with nineteen known alkaloids, were isolated from the branches of Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br. The isolated alkaloids were classified into ten framework types. The structures of the undescribed alkaloids were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, ECD calculation, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Alstoscholarinine A is an unreported and unusual monoterpene indole alkaloid incorporating three nitrogen atoms, characterized by a compact 6/5/6/6/6/5 hexacyclic system bearing a piperidine ring and

Anxiolytic and Antidepressant-like Effects of Monoterpene Tetrahydrolinalool and In silico Approach of new Potential Targets.

INTRODUCTION: Although drugs currently available for the treatment of anxiety and depression act through modulation of the neurotransmission systems involved in the neurobiology of the disorder, yet they often present side effects, which can impair patient adherence to treatment. METHODS: This has driven the search for new molecules with anxiolytic and antidepressant potential. Aromatic plants are rich in essential oils, and their chemical constituents, such as monoterpenes, are being studied for these disorders. This study aims to evaluate the anxiolytic and antidepressant-like potential of

Activity of Selected Group of Monoterpenes in Alzheimer's Disease Symptoms in Experimental Model Studies-A Non-Systematic Review.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia and cognitive function impairment. The multi-faced character of AD requires new drug solutions based on substances that incorporate a wide range of activities. Antioxidants, AChE/BChE inhibitors, BACE1, or anti-amyloid platelet aggregation substances are most desirable because they improve cognition with minimal side effects. Plant secondary metabolites, used in traditional medicine and pharmacy, are promising. Among these are the monoterpenes-low-molecular compounds with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory, analgesic, sed

In vitro alexiteric activity of irregular monoterpenes derived from ortho-menthane against Bothrops diporus Cope (Serpentes: Viperidae) venom.

Many plant-derived compounds, mostly of mid-to-high molecular weight, exert alexiteric properties. However, some small phenolic molecules, such as 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoic acid, are also known to be alexiteric by their ability to bind to snake venom proteins. This study presents the in vitro alexiteric activity of 2-isopropenyl-3-methylphenol [carquejiphenol, CARP; a minor compound of Baccharis trimera (Less.) Interactions of Selected Monoterpenes with Iron and Copper Ions Based on Ferrozine and CUPRAC Methods - the Preliminary Studies.

Secondary plant metabolites are chemical compounds produced by plants through a variety of metabolic pathways. It is known that these compounds, among others, monoterpenes, are characterized by holding valuable pro-health activities when consumed or applied. Taking into account the development of civilizational diseases, eating foods enriched with compounds such as the monoterpenes is highly recommended. Good sources of such health-promoting food items include common fruits and vegetables, seed sources and plant parts used to enhance flavour such as spices. It is known that monoterpene compoun

Potential of hydrocarbon and oxygenated monoterpenes against Culex pipiens larvae: Toxicity, biochemical, pharmacophore modeling and molecular docking studies.

Culex pipiens is a main vector for Bancroftian filariasis, Rift Valley Fever and diseases caused by other viruses, leaving several peoples with disabilities. In recent years, plant derived compounds have received much attention as potential alternatives to synthetic chemicals due to their low toxicity to mammals and environmental persistence. Twenty-one monoterpenes from different chemical groups (hydrocarbons and oxygenated products) were evaluated against Culex pipiens larvae. In addition, in vivo biochemical studies including effects on acetylcholine esterase (AChE), acid and alkaline phosp

Differential effects of plant ontogeny and damage type on phloem and foliage monoterpenes in jack pine (Pinus banksiana).

Coniferous trees have both constitutive and inducible defences that deter or kill herbivores and pathogens. We investigated constitutive and induced monoterpene responses of jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) to a number of damage types: a fungal associate of the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins), Grosmannia clavigera (Robinson-Jeffrey & R.W. Davidson); two phytohormones, methyl jasmonate (MJ) and methyl salicylate (MS); simulated herbivory; and mechanical wounding. We only included the fungal, MJ and mechanical wounding treatments in the field experiments while all treatme

Plant-Derived Monoterpene Therapies in Parkinson's Disease Models: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Monoterpenes (MTs) are plants' secondary metabolites and major components of essential oils (EOs), widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. However, its neuroprotective effects, particularly in Parkinson's disease (PD) have not been fully demonstrated. PD is a progressive neurological disorder marked by dopaminergic neuron loss in the substantia nigra, motor symptoms being the most reported ones. This review evaluates the evidence supporting the use of MTs as potential neuroprotective agents. PubMed, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases were searched for articles on MTs in mu

A Tight-Knit Family: The Medium-Chain Dehydrogenase/Reductases of Monoterpene Indole Alkaloid Biosynthesis.

Medium-chain dehydrogenases/reductases (MDRs) are enzymes that are well-known for catalyzing the reversible reduction of ketones or aldehydes or oxidation of alcohols. However, the biosynthetic pathways of the monoterpene indole alkaloids (MIAs), an important class of natural products derived from plants, highlight that MDRs can also catalyze 1,2- and 1,4-α,β-unsaturated iminium reductions, as well as 1,4-α,β-unsaturated carbonyl reduction. The noncanonical activities of these MDRs correlate with distinct catalytic architectures centered on amino acid substitutions that impact catalytic zinc c

Windthrow causes declines in carbohydrate and phenolic concentrations and increased monoterpene emission in Norway spruce.

With the increasing frequencies of extreme weather events caused by climate change, the risk of forest damage from insect attacks grows. Storms and droughts can damage and weaken trees, reduce tree vigour and defence capacity and thus provide host trees that can be successfully attacked by damaging insects, as often observed in Norway spruce stands attacked by the Eurasian spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. Following storms, partially uprooted trees with grounded crowns suffer reduced water uptake and carbon assimilation, which may lower their vigour and decrease their ability to defend again
