Indole and carbazole alkaloids from Glycosmis montana with weak anti-HIV and cytotoxic activities.

A diprenylated indole, (E)-3-(3-hydroxymethyl-2-butenyl)-7-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-1H-indole (1), and six known carbazole alkaloids were isolated from the twigs and leaves of Glycosmis montana Pierre (Rutaceae). Their structures were determined on the basis of analysis of spectral evidence including 1D and 2D NMR and MS. The alkaloids (1-3) exhibited weak to moderate take in vitro inhibitory activity against HIV replication in C8166 cells, and they (as well as carbalexine A and B) had cytotoxic activity against the human leukaemia cell line CCRF-CEM.

Hutterite cerebro-osteo-nephrodysplasia: autosomal recessive trait in a Lehrerleut Hutterite family from Montana.

We are reporting on two Lehrerleut Hutterite sisters who have a syndrome of congenital shortness with mild spondylorhizomelic dwarfism; later failure to thrive, ie deceleration of weight gain presumably due to CNS-based severe feeding problems; a CNS defect, probably developmental (not biochemical) with normal prenatal brain growth but later deceleration from 50th to 2nd centile associated with severe mental retardation and decorticate disturbances of neurologic function; and possible renal involvement with terminal nephrotic syndrome. This seems to be a previously undescribed pleiotropic auto

Latitudinal Clines in Diapause Onset and Circadian Clock Characteristics in Drosophila littoralis and Drosophila montana.

Drosophila littoralis and Drosophila montana are two widespread species of the virilis group that occur at latitudes between approximately 40°N and 70°N. To survive the winter, they undergo a photoperiodically controlled diapause triggered by the decreasing photoperiod in late summer to autumn. Previous studies have shown that the critical photoperiod at which diapause is triggered depends on latitude. Fly populations living at high latitudes have a longer critical photoperiod than populations living at low latitudes, meaning that they enter diapause earlier. It is not yet fully understood how

No evidence of persistent Yersina pestis infection at prairie dog colonies in north-central Montana.

Sylvatic plague is a flea-borne zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which can cause extensive mortality among prairie dogs (Cynomys) in western North America. It is unclear whether the plague organism persists locally among resistant host species or elsewhere following epizootics. From June to August 2002 and 2003 we collected blood and flea samples from small mammals at prairie dog colonies with a history of plague, at prairie dog colonies with no history of plague, and from off-colony sites where plague history was unknown. Blood was screened for antibody to Y. pestis b

Treatment of cyanobacterial (microcystin) toxicosis using oral cholestyramine: case report of a dog from Montana.

A two and a half year old spayed female Miniature Australian Shepherd presented to a Montana veterinary clinic with acute onset of anorexia, vomiting and depression. Two days prior, the dog was exposed to an algal bloom in a community lake.Within h, the animal became lethargic and anorexic, and progressed to severe depression and vomiting. A complete blood count and serum chemistry panel suggested acute hepatitis, and a severe coagulopathy was noted clinically. Feces from the affected dog were positive for the cyanobacterial biotoxin, microcystin-LA (217 ppb). The dog was hospitalized for eigh

Serotypes of spotted fever group rickettsiae isolated from Dermacentor andersoni (Stiles) ticks in western Montana.

Adult Dermacentor andersoni ticks were collected by flagging vegetation in 18 canyons bordering the Bitterroot Valley, Montana, an area where nearly 400 cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) have occurred since 1900. Three hundred and nine (8.3%) of the 3,705 ticks collected contained hemocyte-associated rickettsia-like organisms of three morphologic types, coccobacillary, fine bacillary, and coarse bacillary (long forms). Only the coccobacillary and fine bacillary organisms stained with fluorescein-conjugated antibody specific for the spotted fever group. One hundred and six isolates o

Haplotype-resolved genome assembly of female Vernicia montana elucidates its W-specific sex-determination region.

Vernicia montana is a dioecious woody tree with a ZW sex determination system, yet the molecular basis of sex determination remains poorly understood. Here, we constructed a chromosome-level, haplotype-resolved female genome assembly using PacBio HiFi sequencing and Hi-C scaffolding, and integrated population-scale coverage-based genome-wide association analysis of 178 natural individuals to identify sex-associated loci. A highly localized sex-associated signal was detected on ChrB02, defining a ~61.4-kb W-specific sex-determining region (SDR) that is sharply bounded by conserved syntenic bloc

Anthelmintic activity of winter savory (Satureja montana L.) essential oil against gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep.

BACKGROUND: The increasing difficulties in combating anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) of sheep worldwide, and the residues of chemical drugs in animal products and the environment, necessitate the search for alternatives. Previous studies have shown that plant essential oils (EOs) could be valuable anthelmintic agents, due to their numerous advantages. The present study aimed to evaluate the possibility of using winter savory (Satureja montana L.) EO against sheep GINs. The chemical composition of the tested oil was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Notes from the field: Q fever outbreak associated with goat farms--Washington and Montana, 2011.

On April 22, 2011, the Q fever bacterium Coxiella burnetii was detected in a goat placenta collected from a farm in Washington, where 14 of 50 (28%) pregnant does had aborted since January. A county health alert advised health-care providers to ask patients with symptoms compatible with Q fever (e.g., fever, headache, chills, and myalgia) about exposure to goats, and the owners of the farm informed purchasers of their goats that C. burnetii had been detected in their herd. On May 25, the county health department reported a symptomatic patient with antibodies to C. burnetii who had purchased go

Chemical and biological investigations of a toxic plant from Central Africa, Magnistipula butayei subsp. montana.

Magnistipula butayei subsp. montana (Chrysobalanaceae) is known, in the Great Lakes Region, to possess toxicological properties. In this paper, we investigated the acute toxicity (dose levels 50-1600 mg/kg) of its aqueous extract, administered orally to adult Wistar rats. This study demonstrated that the freeze-dried aqueous extract (5%, w/w) possesses high toxicity. The extract caused hypothermia, neurological disorders, including extensor reflex of maximal convulsive induced-seizures at about 2 h after the administered dose, and death occurred (LD50=370 mg/kg) in a dose dependent manner. A comparison of risk factors associated with suicide ideation/attempts in American Indian and White youth in Montana.

We examined racial/ethnic and gender-specific associations between suicide ideation/attempts and risky behaviors, sadness/hopelessness, and victimization in Montana American Indian and White youth using 1999-2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals in stratified racial/ethnic-gender groups. The primary results of this study show that although the American Indian youth had more statistically significant suicidal thoughts and attempts than the White youth, they had fewer statistically significant predictors compared

Effects of the serjania erecta and zeyheria montana ethanol extracts in experimental pulpitis in rats: a histological study.

The potato, being an underground vegetable crop, faces consistent threats from soil- and tuber-borne fungal and bacterial pathogens. Black scurf and stem canker disease caused by the fungal pathogen Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn is a critical global concern in the potato cultivation system. In this study, we evaluated the disease mitigation potential of five systemic acquired resistance-inducing chemicals viz., salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, β-aminobutyric acid, γ-aminobutyric acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Two common methods, tuber dipping and foliar spray, were utilized in this experiment to e
