Moraxella catarrhalis in acute laryngitis: infection or colonization?

The complement phenotypes of Moraxella catarrhalis isolates obtained from adult patients with acute laryngitis were investigated using a microliter serum bactericidal assay and compared with those of other donor groups. Laryngitis isolates had a higher proportion (57%) of complement-resistant strains than did carrier strains from healthy 8- to 13-year-old schoolchildren (16%). The difference between these groups was statistically significant (chi2 [3 x 2 table] = 21.55; P < .001). The relatively frequent occurrence of the complement-resistant (virulence-associated) phenotype in adults with acu

Cloning and sequencing of a Moraxella bovis pilin gene.

Moraxella bovis pili have been shown to play a major role in both infectivity and protective immunity of bovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis. Sonicated M. bovis DNA from the piliated strain EPP63 was inserted into the vector lambda gt11 with EcoRI linkers. Recombinant phage were screened with an oligonucleotide probe based on the amino-terminal portion of the DNA sequence of a Neisseria gonorrhoeae pilin gene. Two candidate phages produced a protein that comigrated with EPP63 beta pilin in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels and bound anti-pilus antisera. The 1.9-kilobase insert from

Serologic and protective characterization of Moraxella bovis pili.

This study was conducted to determine the protective nature of purified M. bovis EPP 63 pili in controlling experimentally induced Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis, and to determine antigenic similarity of pili isolated from various M. bovis isolates. Ten calves were vaccinated twice, 28 days apart, with 5.0 mg (protein) EPP 63 purified pili. Ten calves were maintained as non-vaccinated controls. All calves were exposed to ultraviolet light prior to challenge. The calves were challenged by instilling approximately 2.0 X 10(8) CFU of EPP 63 piliated organisms into the conjunctival sac. An

Comparison of the virulence of various strains of Moraxella bovis.

The relative virulence of various strains of Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) was studied using the eyes of mice and cattle. The investigation consisted of three separate experiments. Experiments I and II involved a study on the effects of (1) different methods of growth and (2) serial blood agar passaging on the virulence of M. bovis. Experiment III involved a study on the relative virulence of different strains of M. bovis and M. bovis-like organisms. Strains of M. bovis and M. bovis-like organisms varied in their pathogenicity for mice. However, different methods for preparation of exposure cultu

Moraxella peritoneal dialysis-related infections: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Moraxella species, although infrequent in peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated infections, are established pathogens. Moraxella catarrhalis is recognized as a cause of upper and lower respiratory tract infections and is increasingly associated with β-lactamase production. The role of Moraxella species in PD-related infections warrants further investigation. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted for cases of PD-associated infections caused by Moraxella. Inclusion criteria required a diagnosis of peritonitis or exit-site infection confirmed by c

Branhamella (Moraxella) catarrhalis: pathogenic significance in respiratory infections.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the pathogenic significance of Branhamella catarrhalis isolates in patients with respiratory infections and to define the clinical characteristics of such patients. DESIGN AND SETTING: Respiratory specimens were assessed in a three-year prospective study performed in a Brisbane metropolitan hospital. Assessment of the pathogenic significance of isolates of B. catarrhalis was based on four predetermined criteria: (i) clinical evidence of respiratory infection based on history, examination and chest x-ray; (ii) isolation of B. catarrhalis as the sole potential pathogen; (i

Moraxella corneal ulcers: poor response to medical treatment.

Three patients, all chronic alcoholics, had corneal ulcers caused by two Moraxella species. The diagnosis was suspected from the Gram's stain in two cases and confirmed by culture in all three. In spite of aggressive and appropriate medical management, all three cases required surgical intervention. Two patients underwent penetrating keratoplasty for perforation or descemetocele, and one received a conjunctival flap. Moraxella corneal ulcers often do not respond well to medical treatment. As these organisms are highly susceptible to antibiotics in vitro, host factors must play a role in the po

Moraxella catarrhalis bacteremia in adult with cardiogenic pulmonary edema.

Bacteremia due to Moraxella Catarrhalis is rare. An 85-year-old Japanese woman had productive cough, dyspnea, and fever. She had type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic heart failure. Infiltration shown on chest radiography could be explained by heart failure or pneumonia. Initial blood culture yielded Gram-negative cocci, identified as M. catarrhalis. We therefore diagnosed cardiogenic pulmonary edema and M. catarrhalis pneumonia. M. catarrhalis has a high prevalence of β-lactamase production, so treatment comprised ampicillin/sulbactam. The clinical outcomes were favorable. Our case shows the i

Incidental diagnosis of sternoclavicular septic arthritis with Moraxella nonliquefaciens.

An 83-year old man presented acutely to the emergency department with generalized weakness and subjective fevers. A month earlier he had undergone resection of a large intramuscular sarcoma from his thigh. The cancer staging work-up was still underway and a decision about adjuvant therapy was still pending. Although initial laboratory assessment showed leukocytosis, this normalized soon after admission without the use of antimicrobials. No fevers were documented. During the admission an 18F-FDG PET/CT was performed in continuation of his sarcoma staging workup. This revealed unexpected abnorma

Moraxella bovoculi and infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: cause or coincidence?

Moraxella bovoculi is a recently described gram-negative coccus that was isolated from eyes of calves with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK, or "pinkeye") in 2002. This organism probably has been associated with IBK for many years and, until it was shown to be distinct from M ovis, may have been incorrectly identified as M ovis, Branhamella ovis, M ovis-like, or B ovis-like by diagnostic laboratories. M bovoculi can be isolated from normal calves and cattle with IBK or conjunctivitis. An exact role for M bovoculi in the pathogenesis of IBK is uncertain; however, anecdotal evidence o

Current progress with Moraxella catarrhalis antigens as vaccine candidates.

The success of the immunization programs against Haemophilus influenzae type b and, more recently, Streptococcus pneumoniae in developed and some developing countries has demonstrated that invasive disease caused by these bacteria can be very effectively controlled by vaccination. There is also evidence that pneumococcal vaccines can reduce the incidence of acute otitis media in children. More complete control of this disease would be achieved if infections caused by Moraxella catarrhalis and nontypeable H. influenzae, the other common agents of otitis media in children and of a number of resp

Association between Moraxella keratitis and advanced glycation end products.

Diabetes mellitus is recognized as a major predisposing factor for Moraxella keratitis. However, how diabetes mellitus contributes to Moraxella keratitis remains unclear. In this study, we examined Moraxella keratitis; based on the findings, we investigated the impact of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) deposition in the cornea of individuals with diabetic mellitus on the adhesion of Moraxella isolates to the cornea. A retrospective analysis of 27 culture-proven cases of Moraxella keratitis at Ehime University Hospital (March 2006 to February 2022) was performed. Moraxella isolates were

Infectious endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Moraxella catarrhalis.

Moraxella catarrhalis frequently colonises the oropharynges of healthy individuals. Disease is usually limited to the oropharynx, upper airways and lower airways in patients with predisposing conditions. The pathogen rarely causes more invasive disease. We present the case of a 65-year-old woman with Crohn's disease on azathioprine, who was diagnosed with native valve M. catarrhalis endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis several weeks after an upper respiratory tract infection. She presented to hospital with 5 weeks of worsening malaise, nausea, relapsing fevers, weight loss, acute-on-chroni

[Moraxella bovis biomass production in a bench-top fermentor].

A Moraxella bovis strain was isolated from a kerato-conjunctivities lesion of a calf in Villa Valeria (Córdoba); it was used to establish improved cultural conditions, such as nature and concentration of carbon and nitrogen sources, and pH control in shaken flasks. The selected conditions were assayed for biomass production in a bench-top fermentor. The strain is used by the pharmaceutical industry to produce vaccines and adjuvants. In the initial condition (48 h culture on blood agar) 0.019 g biomass/l.h-1 was obtained. With the use of liquid defined medium with pH control, productivity was i

Quantification of Moraxella bovis haemagglutinating adhesins with monoclonal antibodies.

Six monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against Moraxella bovis GF 9 were used to quantify haemagglutinating adhesins of 16 strains of this organism. The amount of each MAb necessary to inhibit one haemagglutinating unit of each strain varied between 4 and 0.007 times that required by strain GF 9. Five strains reacted with six MAbs, one with five, two with four, one with three, two with two and three with none. The procedures used enabled to detect dominant strains candidates for vaccines.

Antibiotic susceptibilities and drug resistance in Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis.

PURPOSE: To summarize current knowledge of drug susceptibility and mechanisms of drug resistance in Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current medical literature was reviewed, with careful attention to recent studies of the BRO beta-lactamases. RESULTS: Although intrinsically resistant to a small group of drugs that included vancomycin and trimethoprim, acquired drug resistance in Branhamella catarrhalis was unknown in the early years of antimicrobial therapy. During 1976 to 1977, however, two previously unrecognized beta-lactamases appeared in this species almos
