Morphogenesis of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus.

Morphogenesis of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus was studied by means of electron microscopy. Virus-specific structures (factories, viroplasts) were found at early stages of infection; these structures were composed of fibrillar and cylindrical formations, aggregates of ribosomes, and viral nucleoids. The latter emerged from fibrillar and cylindrical structures. Aggregates of viral nucleoids were found in the cytoplasm and occasionally in the nuclei of virus-infected cells. Viral envelopes and mature virions were formed on the cell membranes and on the membranes of intracellular vacu

Follistatin regulates tooth root furcation morphogenesis.

Follistatin (Fst), an extracellular inhibitor of the TGF-β signaling pathway, plays a critical role in tooth development, particularly in crown morphogenesis and enamel patterning. While molar root number is conserved within species and between upper and lower jaws, the molecular mechanisms governing root patterning remain largely unknown. To investigate the role of Fst in root formation, we analyzed K14-Cre-mediated Fst knockout mice. During embryonic and early postnatal stages, Fst was dynamically expressed in the dental epithelium including the lingual epithelium, and primary and secondary

Spontaneous Curvature Sculpts Filament-Vesicle Morphogenesis.

Membrane-bound filaments are central to cellular morphogenesis, yet how spontaneous curvature regulates filament-membrane coupling under geometric confinement remains unclear. Here we show that spontaneous curvature fundamentally reorganizes filament-membrane morphogenesis in vesicles by biasing the competition between membrane deformation and filament bending. Using a unified curvature-elasticity framework that couples membrane and filament curvature energetics, we construct phase diagrams for vesicles enclosing filament loops and demonstrate that spontaneous curvature selects distinct symmet

Regional differences in neural crest morphogenesis.

Neural crest cells are pluripotent cells that emerge from the neural epithelium, migrate extensively, and differentiate into numerous derivatives, including neurons, glial cells, pigment cells and connective tissue. Major questions concerning their morphogenesis include: 1) what establishes the pathways of migration and 2) what controls the final destination and differentiation of various neural crest subpopulations. These questions will be addressed in this review. Neural crest cells from the trunk level have been explored most extensively. Studies show that melanoblasts are specified shortly

[Autoimmune thyroiditis: pathogenesis, morphogenesis and classification].

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) are a heterogenous group of organ specific autoimmune diseases (AID) of the thyroid. Their pathogenesis is associated with predisposing, initiating and promoting factors. Morphogenesis is based on the hypersensitivity reaction of the immediate and delayed types with the development of acute or chronic immune inflammation in combination with atrophic and hyperplastic alterations of the parenchyma (reaction of neutralization and inactivation). AT can be subdivided into primary ones (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, chronic atrophic thyroiditis

Early events in mammalian craniofacial morphogenesis.

Head-trunk differences are well established in the most primitive vertebrates, and are clear from early developmental stages of all modern forms. The boundary between the two regions is not constant in all vertebrate classes in terms of the number of occipital somites. The occipital region is in some respects a transitional zone, giving rise to trunk-like somitic derivatives in the head. It is also highly specialised, providing a unique population of neural crest cells that are essential for formation of the aorticopulmonary septum (which divides the outflow tract of the heart) in mammals and

[Morphogenesis of primary biliary liver cirrhosis].

Light and electron microscopy were employed for evaluation of hepatic biopsies (9 puncture and 3 operative) to study morphologic changes in small bile ducts and lobular parenchyma in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). Altogether 12 female patients with PBC stage I and II and aged 36-59 were examined. Immune cytolysis of biliary epithelium indicative of delayed-type hypersensitivity is shown to underlie destructive cholangitis. The appearance of the canals between hepatocytes of the hepatic plate which connect biliary capillaries with perisinusoidal space evidence for impairment of hepatic lobula

[Morphogenesis of vaginal aplasia. Therapeutic deductions].

On the basis of the studies of the embryogenesis of the vagina, the authors consider that malformations classically described as being partial aplasia should not be separated from the total absence of the vagina. The important feature is the association of a functioning or non functioning uterus with the absence of the vagina. They believe that it is incorrect to describe the pouch of menstrual retention associated with a functioning uterus as "haematocolpos" and that is not justified to describe the cup-shaped vestibular depression as "hemi-vagina". According to the authors, although vaginal

The role of Rho GTPases in facial morphogenesis.

Facial morphogenesis relies on the coordinated regulation of cellular behaviors that sculpt the face from simple facial prominences to the fully confluent lip and nose. Disruptions to migration of cranial neural crest cells and/or the directed growth of the prominences will lead to abnormalities such as orofacial clefts. Here we review what is known about the roles of the actin cytoskeleton and its key regulators, the small RHO GTPases, during neural crest cell migration and facial development. Although small RHO GTPase signaling has been studied in the context of cancer and vascular pathologi

Vegfr3 and Tbx1 Interact in Cardiac Morphogenesis.

Gene inactivation in model organisms has identified numerous genes and signaling pathways involved in mammalian cardiac outflow tract (OFT) development. Human genetics data have implicated the VEGFR3 gene in OFT development, but when and where it is required is unknown. In this study we determined the sensitivity of the developing murine heart to reduced Vegfr3 gene dosage, and we tested whether its requirement is dependent upon TBX1, a known regulator of Vegfr3 expression in cardiac and lymphatic endothelial cells. We found that in the mouse, a single copy of the Vegfr3 gene was sufficient fo

Morphogenesis of the Mammalian Aortic Arch Arteries.

The major vessels in mammals that take blood away from the heart and deliver it to the arms and the head take their origin from the aortic arch and are derived from the arteries formed within the embryonic pharyngeal arches. These pharyngeal arch arteries, initially symmetrical, form in a cranial to caudal sequence within the pharyngeal mesenchyme. They then undergo a complex process of remodeling to produce the asymmetrical brachiocephalic arteries as seen in the adult. A complex interaction between the tissues of the pharyngeal arches and the genes they express is required to ensure that art

The development of the human uterus: morphogenesis to menarche.

There is emerging evidence that early uterine development in humans is an important determinant of conditions such as ontogenetic progesterone resistance, menstrual preconditioning, defective deep placentation and pre-eclampsia in young adolescents. A key observation is the relative infrequency of neonatal uterine bleeding and hormone withdrawal at birth. The origin of the uterus from the fusion of the two paramesonephric, or Müllerian, ducts was described almost 200 years ago. The uterus forms around the 10th week of foetal life. The uterine corpus and the cervix react differently to the circ

Branching morphogenesis as a driver of renal development.

Branching morphogenesis is an integral developmental mechanism central to the formation of a range of organs including the kidney, lung, pancreas and mammary gland. The ramified networks of epithelial tubules it establishes are critical for the processes of secretion, excretion and exchange mediated by these tissues. In the kidney, branching serves to establish the collecting duct system that transports urine from the nephrons into the renal pelvis, ureter and finally the bladder. Generally speaking, the formation of these networks in different organs begins with the specification and differen

Grxcr2 is required for stereocilia morphogenesis in the cochlea.

Hearing and balance depend upon the precise morphogenesis and mechanosensory function of stereocilia, the specialized structures on the apical surface of sensory hair cells in the inner ear. Previous studies of Grxcr1 mutant mice indicated a critical role for this gene in control of stereocilia dimensions during development. In this study, we analyzed expression of the paralog Grxcr2 in the mouse and evaluated auditory and vestibular function of strains carrying targeted mutations of the gene. Peak expression of Grxcr2 occurs during early postnatal development of the inner ear and GRXCR2 is lo

Cadherins and catenins in dendrite and synapse morphogenesis.

Neurons are highly polarized specialized cells. Neuronal integrity and functional roles are critically dependent on dendritic architecture and synaptic structure, function and plasticity. The cadherins are glycosylated transmembrane proteins that form cell adhesion complexes in various tissues. They are associated with a group of cytosolic proteins, the catenins. While the functional roles of the complex have been extensively investigates in non-neuronal cells, it is becoming increasingly clear that components of the complex have critical roles in regulating dendritic and synaptic architecture

[Morphogenesis of the stromal tissue of nasal polyps].

The objective of the present work was to study various stages of morphogenesis of the stromal tissue of nasal polyps. The materials for the investigation were harvested during endoscopic polypotomies in the nose. They were used to obtain the preparations that were stained by the histological and histochemical methods. The immunochemical studies were carried out using monoclonal antibodies against differentiation clusters, such as CD20, CD31, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The study has demonstrated that the growth and evolution of the nasal polyps are accompanied by sequential

PI3K signaling in the regulation of branching morphogenesis.

Branching morphogenesis drives the formation of epithelial organs including the mammary gland, lung, kidney, salivary gland and prostate. Branching at the cellular level also drives development of the nervous and vascular systems. A variety of signaling pathways are orchestrated together to establish the pattern of these branched organs. The phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling network is of particular interest because of the diverse outcomes it generates, including proliferation, motility, growth, survival and cell death. Here, we focus on the role of the PI3K pathway in the development

[Morphogenesis, structure and properties of lymphatic vessels].

In this paper, we present literature results related to structure and various manners of lymphatic vessel formation during embryonic development and in pathological events, such as tumorigenesis, wound healing, and other diseases. The functions of the lymphatic system include the collection of fluids that enter tissues from the circulation, absorption of lipids and lipid-soluble vitamins from the intestine and their subsequent transport, participation in antigen, dendritic cell, and lymphocyte migration. The lymphatic system is also a route for tumor cell and inflammatory cell transport. Nativ
