The chemicals between us-First results of the cluster analyses on anatomy embalming procedures in the German-speaking countries.

Hands-on courses utilizing preserved human tissues for educational training offer an important pathway to acquire basic anatomical knowledge. Owing to the reevaluation of formaldehyde limits by the European Commission, a joint approach was chosen by the German-speaking anatomies in Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) to find commonalities among embalming protocols and infrastructure. A survey comprising 537 items was circulated to all anatomies in German-speaking Europe. Clusters were established for "ethanol"-, formaldehyde-based ("FA"), and "other" embalming procedures, depending on the c

Thai tsunami victim identification overview to date.

The boxing day tsunami of 26 December 2004 caused devastation and loss of life around the Indian ocean. International disaster victim identification efforts were centred in Thailand, with many odontologists from over 20 countries contributing to the examination of deceased, collection of antemortem information, comparison and reconciliation of data. The contribution of forensic odontology to the identification process conducted in Thailand in response to the tsunami devastation is presented in a composite of short reports focused on the five phases associated with disaster victim identificatio

Out of Africa: modern human origins special feature: middle and later Pleistocene hominins in Africa and Southwest Asia.

Approximately 700,000 years ago, Homo erectus in Africa was giving way to populations with larger brains accompanied by structural adjustments to the vault, cranial base, and face. Such early Middle Pleistocene hominins were not anatomically modern. Their skulls display strong supraorbital tori above projecting faces, flattened frontals, and less parietal expansion than is the case for Homo sapiens. Postcranial remains seem also to have archaic features. Subsequently, some groups evolved advanced skeletal morphology, and by ca. 200,000 years ago, individuals more similar to recent humans are p

Comparison of child morbidity in two contrasting medieval cemeteries from Denmark.

This study compares associations between demographic profiles, long bone lengths, bone mineral content, and frequencies of stress indicators in the preadult populations of two medieval skeletal assemblages from Denmark. One is from a leprosarium, and thus probably represents a disadvantaged group (Naestved). The other comes from a normal, and in comparison rather privileged, medieval community (AEbelholt). Previous studies of the adult population indicated differences between the two skeletal collections with regard to mortality, dental size, and metabolic and specific infectious disease. The

Connected to the cloud at time of death: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Our case report provides the first clinical evaluation of autopsy practices for a patient death that occurs on the cloud. We question how autopsy practices may require adaptation for a death that presents via the 'Internet of Things', examining how existing guidelines capture data related to death which is no longer confined to the patient's body. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a British man in his 50s, who came to the attention of the medical team via an alert on the cloud-based platform that monitored his implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The patient had a backgrou

Reassessing stature estimation in modern Britain: A PMCT-based evaluation and alternative to Trotter and Gleser in forensic anthropology casework.

Stature estimation is one key component of the biological profile in forensic anthropology, yet most available regression formulae are derived from non-contemporary and non-UK reference samples. This study aimed to develop and evaluate preliminary PMCT-derived regression equations for estimating cadaveric length from long-bone measurements in a contemporary East London mortuary sample; and to compare their performance with commonly used Trotter and Gleser formulae. Whole-body PMCT scans of 100 adults from the East London Forensic Centre were analysed, comprising 50 males and 50 females aged 25

Medical debt during epidemics: A case for resolving the situation in low- and middle-income countries such as Kenya.

This paper evaluates the problem of medical debt in Kenya during the COVID-19 pandemic. The medical debt problem is compounded during pandemics such as COVID-19 when patients seek treatment and end up in insurmountable debt because illnesses related to the pandemic are not covered by the Kenyan National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), the public health coverage body under government control. As a result, discharged patients may be detained in hospitals and dead bodies are locked away in mortuaries, until relatives and friends fundraise and clear the bills. Apart from causing vulnerability, fear,

Biomechanical evidence for occupational specialization in Mesolithic-Neolithic hunter-gatherers from Zvejnieki, Latvia.

Mesolithic cemeteries have greater dimensionality and scale that reflect emerging social complexity following the Upper Paleolithic. The Zvejnieki cemetery dates between the Middle Mesolithic and Late Neolithic, is associated with a persistent hunter-fisher-gatherer economy, and includes burials with pendants fashioned from mammal teeth. Stable isotopic analyses indicate dietary differences between individuals with pendants and without pendants beginning early in life. This context provides an opportunity to explore questions relating to occupational specialization using long bone cross-sectio

Upper Palaeolithic ritualistic cannibalism at Gough's Cave (Somerset, UK): The human remains from head to toe.

A recurring theme of late Upper Palaeolithic Magdalenian human bone assemblages is the remarkable rarity of primary burials and the common occurrence of highly-fragmentary human remains mixed with occupation waste at many sites. One of the most extensive Magdalenian human bone assemblages comes from Gough's Cave, a sizeable limestone cave set in Cheddar Gorge (Somerset), UK. After its discovery in the 1880s, the site was developed as a show cave and largely emptied of sediment, at times with minimal archaeological supervision. Some of the last surviving remnants of sediment within the cave wer

Detection of medical examiner cases from review of cremation requests.

Title 9, Chapter 19, Article 3 of the Arizona Administrative Code requires all bodies that are to be cremated must have the death certificate reviewed by a county medical examiner. In Tucson, AZ, and surrounding Pima County, all cremation requests are submitted to the Forensic Science Center, where the death certificates are reviewed by one of 5 board-certified forensic pathologists. In 2002, there were 5557 cremation requests, and in 2003 there were 5662 cremation requests. Of these requests, 670 (12.1%) and 447 (7.9%) death certificates were flagged for further investigation in 2002 and 2003

Healthcare professionals' perceptions and experiences of using a cold cot following the loss of a baby: a qualitative study in maternity and neonatal units in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Best practice in perinatal bereavement care suggests offering parents the opportunity to spend time with their baby. Cold cots facilitate this purpose by reducing the deterioration of the body and evidence indicates their wide availability in maternity and neonatal units in the UK. This study aimed to examine healthcare professionals' perceptions and experiences of using a cold cot following the loss of a baby. METHODS: A qualitative cross-sectional study was designed. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 maternity and neonatal unit healthcare professionals

Unveiling the unpredictable: A comprehensive inquiry into sudden and unexpected deaths undergoing medico-legal investigation at Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Services Mortuary.

PURPOSE: Sudden and unexpected death (SUD) is the abrupt death of a seemingly healthy individual, which requires medico-legal investigation under the South African Inquest Act (1959) and the National Health Act (2003). Studies conducted in South Africa from 2001 to 2016 report a SUD prevalence between 4% and 14%; however, research is limited. This study aimed to review SUD in adults at Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Services Mortuary (TFPSM) to determine the prevalence, leading causes, and demographic and temporal patterns. METHODS: This was a retrospective descriptive study employing non-proba

Management of the dead during COVID-19 outbreak in Malaysia.

The emergence of a novel human coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, causing severe respiratory tract infections in humans, is affecting all countries of the world and has become a global health concern. Since the virus was first identified in December 2019, the number of deaths have been propagating exponentially, causing countries across the world, including Malaysia, to increase emergency measures to combat the virus. Due to the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic does not discriminate its victims, it is of paramount importance to construct a plan for management of the dead for all suspected or confirmed CO

Longitudinal assessment of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression after exposure to traumatic death.

Little is known of the specific effects of exposure to traumatic death, an important dimension of many disasters. This study examined acute and long-term intrusive and avoidant symptoms, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in disaster workers exposed to traumatic death after the USS Iowa gun turret explosion. Fifty-four volunteer body handlers were assessed at 1, 4, and 13 months. They were compared with 11 non-body handler disaster worker volunteers. The Impact of Events Scale, Zung Depression Scale, Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, and a multi-method assessment of PTSD were use

Post-mortem CT: A Useful Tool to Confirm a Case of Suspected Sudden Cardiac Death.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is defined as the unexpected death of an individual, not due to any extracardiac cause, occurring within one hour of symptom onset or within 24 hours of last being seen in good health if the death is unwitnessed. Forensic pathologists routinely encounter several SCD cases in their practice. The presentation of such cases can be of two types; firstly, with typical signs and symptoms suggestive of cardiac pathology, and secondly, devoid of any presentation history. This history helps forensic pathologists look for relevant findings during the autopsy examination. The a

Autopsy, thanatopraxy, cemeteries and crematoria as hotspots of toxic organic contaminants in the funeral industry continuum.

The occurrence and health risks of toxic organic contaminants (TOCs) in the funeral industry are relatively under-studied compared to other industries. An increasing body of literature reports TOCs including emerging contaminants in the funeral industry, but comprehensive reviews of the evidence are still lacking. Hence, evidence was analysed to address the proposition that, the funeral industry constitutes several hotspot reservoirs of a wide spectrum of TOCs posing ecological and human health risks. TOCs detected include embalming products, persistent organic pollutants, synthetic pesticides
