Laryngeal vibration patterns. Machine-aided measurements from high-speed film.

A report is given on the development of procedures to process laryngeal high-speed films to extract the glottal wave-form and other glottal measurements. The glottal waveforms that are derived by this direct method are being used to determine whether the pathological larynx is manifested in its abnormal vibratory pattern. The glottal waveforms measured by sonic-sensing pen tracing, cursor outlining, a photocell technique, and television camera scanning are presented and compared with the conventional polar planimeter method. To date, the television camera method is the most rapid procedure and

The nature of primary vocal tremor.

Three elderly women with marked progressive voice tremor, without other neurological symptoms, and negative family histories were investigated. All had a 4-5 Hz respiratory tremor in expiration and, to a lesser degree, in inspiration; and all had vocal tremulousness synchronous with their respiratory irregularity. Articulation of phonemes was normal. In two cases the neurological examination was otherwise normal; in the third case there was a minimal 71/2 Hz tremor in the left thumb and index finger. Simultaneous speech and vocal air pressure recordings, as well as cinematographic studies of t

Screening selves: sciences of memory and identity on film, 1930-1960.

Chemicals that could be used scientifically to force an individual to tell the truth - dubbed truth sera - were first described in the early 1920s. Ever since, the notion of "truth drugs" has remained tenaciously within popular culture. One of the most important reasons for the survival of the notion of a pharmaceutical technology of authenticity was the role of the barbiturates sodium amytal and sodium pentothal in psychiatric research and treatment during the 1930s through the 1950s. This article traces that history, giving special emphasis to the role of motion pictures. The article argues

How often we see alcohol in movies: A Systematic review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to alcohol portrayals in movies has been associated with increased alcohol use. Several studies have examined the prevalence and frequency of alcohol portrayals in movies, but systematic synthesis of this evidence is lacking. This review aimed to estimate the pooled proportion of movies that portrayed alcohol and the average frequency of such portrayals per movie. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted across three major databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science). Eligible articles were selected through title and abstract screening, and full-text review. Studi

Human neuron activity during an 83-minute movie from 2,286 neurons and 29 patients.

Despite a growing trend towards more naturalistic experiments, few single-unit datasets collected during dynamic and naturalistic stimuli have been released, and none using a full-length movie. Here, we present SUMMER (Single Unit activity during a Movie in the human Medial temporal lobe via Electrophysiological Recordings), a dataset containing recordings from 2,286 neurons from the human amygdala, hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, parahippocampal cortex, and neighboring structures during the complete presentation of the commercial film 500 Days of Summer to 29 intracranially implanted patients

Pixar's Inside Out as a Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Informed Intervention for Adults.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically validated treatment for chronic, difficult-to-treat, life-threatening mental health conditions. DBT can be challenging to implement and maintain in managed care systems because of the need for substantial infrastructure and intensive clinician training. As a result, most clients receive components of DBT, known as DBT-informed care. This model is valuable in its own right, including for individuals with less severe clinical symptoms. Additionally, clinicians who provide DBT experience professional benefit. Cinematherapy, the incorporation of

Alcohol imagery in popular films in China, 2001-2020.

This study aims to identify the level and trend of alcohol imagery in popular films in China from 2001 to 2020. We divided the running time of the annual 20 top-grossing films in China into 5-min intervals and coded those containing alcohol imagery, the presence of warnings, whether the imagery was related to minors and alcohol brands. Results showed that alcohol imagery occurred in 90.75% (363/400) of the films and 25.26% (2380/9423) of the intervals; these proportions remained stable over time. No film containing alcohol imagery had warnings, alcohol imagery related to minors appeared each y

Cognitive flexibility moderates the efficacy of a visuospatial intervention following exposure to analog trauma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intrusive memories are the hallmark feature of Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD). Recent studies show that a visuospatial intervention after viewing traumatic films reduces intrusive memories in healthy individuals. However, many individuals still exhibit high levels of symptoms following such an intervention, warranting continued investigation into specific characteristics moderating intervention effect. One such candidate is cognitive-flexibility, defined as the ability to update behavior according to contextual demands. The present study examined the interacti

Watching a movie or listening to music is effective in managing perioperative anxiety and pain: a randomised controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Despite the use of perioperative anxiolytics and pain medication, surgery can be a stressful and painful experience. Providing patients with distractions using video and/or audio tools in addition to medication may be helpful. To date, no studies have compared different distraction modalities in a same-day surgical setting in adults. This study aims to determine whether audio-visual distraction with video glasses (AVD) is more effective in reducing anxiety and pain compared to audio distraction (AD) in conscious patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery. It was hypothesised that AVD, be

Numerical Investigation on High-Performance Cu-Based Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor for Biosensing Application.

This numerical research presents a simple hybrid structure comprised of TiO2-Cu-BaTiO3 for a modified Kretschmann configuration that exhibits high sensitivity and high resolution for biosensing applications through an angular interrogation method. Recently, copper (Cu) emerged as an exceptional choice as a plasmonic metal for developing surface plasmon sensors (SPR) with high resolution as it yields finer, thinner SPR curves than Ag and Au. As copper is prone to oxidation, especially in ambient conditions, the proposed structure involves the utilization of barium titanate (BaTiO3) film as a pr

Creating Virtual Models and 3D Movies Using DemoMaker for Anatomical Education.

Three-dimensional (3D) anatomy models have been used for education in health professional schools globally. Virtual technology has become more popular for online teaching since the COVID-19 pandemic. This chapter will describe a project in which a series of virtual anatomical models of organs and structures were developed for educational purposes, and it will describe in detail how to build three-dimensional (3D) movies using DemoMaker. Although setting up the 3D system was complicated and challenging, the process of reconstructing 3D models from radiographic images and the steps of creating a

Seeing Horror through the Lens of Health: Embodying Dissociative Identity Disorder in The Babadook.

This essay analyzes the representation of dissociative identity disorder in Jennifer Kent's debut feature, The Babadook (2014). Although the film's exploration of psychological themes such as maternal ambivalence, grief, and repression have already been widely discussed in the critical literature, I argue that such readings tend to mitigate the embodied nature of the suffering that Kent's film depicts. Using Arthur Frank's concept of chaos stories as well as Edward Branigan's work on film narrative, I show how The Babadook provides a valuable, fictional example of how dissociative identity dis

Deep Learning Algorithm to Detect Cardiac Sarcoidosis From Echocardiographic Movies.

BACKGROUND: Because the early diagnosis of subclinical cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) remains difficult, we developed a deep learning algorithm to distinguish CS patients from healthy subjects using echocardiographic movies. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among the patients who underwent echocardiography from January 2015 to December 2019, we chose 151 echocardiographic movies from 50 CS patients and 151 from 149 healthy subjects. We trained two 3D convolutional neural networks (3D-CNN) to identify CS patients using a dataset of 212 echocardiographic movies with and without a transfer learning method (Pretra

Contagious Horror: Infectious Themes in Fiction and Film.

Infectious diseases have been a preeminent part of literature since the earliest human writings. In particular, they have contributed greatly to the genre of horror-written or visual art intended to startle or scare. Horror fiction has emphasized infectious themes from the earliest Babylonian and Hebrew texts. In medieval times, stories of vampires and werewolves often had a contagious component, and pivotal works of Victorian horror centered around fear of infection and contamination. As film became prominent in the 20th Century, a strong emphasis on themes of plague and apocalypse developed.

Conjoined twins: scientific cinema and Pavlovian physiology.

Through the lens of a 1957 documentary film, "Neural and humoral factors in the regulation of bodily functions (research on conjoined twins)," produced by the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, this essay traces the entwined histories of Soviet physiology, studies of conjoined twins and scientific cinema. It examines the role of Ivan Pavlov and his students, including Leonid Voskresenkii, Dmitrii Fursikov and Petr Anokhin, in the development of "scientific film" as a particular cinematographic genre in Soviet Russia and explores numerous puzzles hidden behind the film's striking visuals.

Degenerative dementias and their medical care in the movies.

Compared with other neurologic problems, few films have been dedicated to degenerative dementia. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review about the way in which dementia patients and their medical care are described in films. Twenty-four of the 53 relevant films that were found in online movie databases could be viewed. The author describes the demographics of the characters suffering from dementia, the clinical picture including neuropsychiatric manifestations, diagnostic procedures, medical follow-up, pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment and the attitude of the caregiver
