Early Surgical Intervention of Congenital Syngnathia.

Congenital syngnathia is a rarely reported malformation when there is a fusion between the maxilla and the mandible. It is necessary to modify it in childhood because congenital syngnathia causes incongruity in pronunciation, diet, and esthetics during the growth process. In this case report, 1 case of syngnathia, a rare craniofacial anomaly, is presented with a review of reports. Prompt diagnosis and surgery were performed right after birth for the present case. A partial limitation point was resolved for further growth. Herein, the authors present the case of a female infant (7 d after birth

Non-syndromic double upper lip with triple frena: cosmetic cheiloplasty.

Double lip or macrocheilitis is a rare facial anomaly, mostly congenital in origin. It commonly involves the upper lip than the lower lip. It may occur in isolation or as part of the Ascher's syndrome. It results due to deposition of excessive areolar tissue and non-inflammatory hyperplasia of labial mucosa gland of pars villosa. It may be acquired as a result of injury to the lips or lip-biting habit. The double lip becomes conspicuous when the lips are retracted during smiling resulting in the characteristic 'cupid's bow' appearance. This disfigurement can pose aesthetic and functional probl

Intraoral lesions associated with sebaceous nevus syndrome.

The sebaceous nevus syndrome describes the rare association of a sebaceous nevus with systemic features such as mental retardation, seizures and colobomas (among others). It is thought to be a cutaneous mosaic inherited as a paradominant trait. Three cases are provided illustrating the intraoral manifestations of the syndrome. The first histological comparison of contiguous mucosal and cutaneous lesions is provided. We also describe the possible association of SFM syndrome with a benign fibrous histiocytic lesion of the mandible. This and other mandibular tumors associated with the sebaceous n

[Craniofacial characteristics of the Class II division 1 malocclusion patients with mouth-breating: a posteroanterior].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the craniofacial characteristics of the Class II malocclusion patients with mouth-breating by posteroanterior cephalometry. METHODS: To measure craniofacial width of the 12 Class II malocclusion patients with mouth-breathing, and to compared these measures with corresponding measures in a group of normal children. RESULTS: The width of the maxillary base bone (J-J) was less than that in normal children significantly (P < 0.01). The mouth-breathing children's upper and lower arch width (at first molar and cuspid) were comparatively narrower, and lateronasal width (Lap-L

Atypical gaze patterns to facial feature areas in autism spectrum disorders reveal age and culture effects: A meta-analysis of eye-tracking studies.

Children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often present with atypical gaze patterns to others' faces, a finding substantiated throughout the literature. Yet, a quantification of atypical gaze patterns to different facial regions (e.g., eyes versus mouth) in ASD remains controversial. Also few study has investigated how age and culture impacted the pattern of gaze abnormalities in ASD. This research therefore conducted a meta-analysis of eye-tracking studies to evaluate age and culture effect on atypical gaze patterns of face processing in ASD. A total of 75 articles (91 studies)

The Silver-Russel syndrome: a case with sexual ambiguity, and a review of literature.

A 38-month-old patient with Silver-Russel syndrome (SRS) and ambiguous genitalia had a 46,XY karyotype on leukocyte and fibroblast cultures. This is the third SRS child with ambiguous genitalia described in the literature. In a review of the findings in 148 reported cases of the syndrome, abnormalities occurring in over 50% of the cases are short stature, craniofacial dysproportion, low birth weight, term gestation, body asymmetry, incurved fifth digits, normal intelligence, short fifth digits, and down-curved corners of the mouth (shark mouth).

Photoanthropometric study of craniofacial traits in individuals with Williams syndrome.

A photoanthropometric method, which enables an objective description of facial structures, was used to better delineate the craniofacial characteristics of 29 individuals with Williams syndrome (WS; 18 males and 11 females) between the ages of 0 to 10 years, with an average age of 4.0 years. Facial parameters were measured from strict frontal and profile photographic 35-mm slides and compared with other facial measurements from the same face (e.g., palpebral fissure width to bizygomatic diameter). Sixteen photoanthropometric craniofacial indices were developed from 20 measurements (3 from the

The impact of mouth breathing on dentofacial development: A concise review.

Mouth breathing is one of the most common deleterious oral habits in children. It often results from upper airway obstruction, making the air enter completely or partially through oral cavity. In addition to nasal obstruction caused by various kinds of nasal diseases, the pathological hypertrophy of adenoids and/or tonsils is often the main etiologic factor of mouth breathing in children. Uncorrected mouth breathing can result in abnormal dental and maxillofacial development and affect the health of dentofacial system. Mouth breathers may present various types of growth patterns and malocclusi

Malocclusion trait and the parafunctional effect among young female school students.

Extraneous activities of either the mouth, tongue or the jaw comprise the oral parafunctional habits of the stomatognathic system. This denominated habit is expressed through bruxism, digit sucking, nail biting to name a few, have led to hypothesizing the possible relationship of evolution of occluso-facial abnormalities such as malocclusion thereby hindering the conventional developmental process. Hence, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence and the possible relationship of parafunctional oral habits with the types of malocclusions among 12-16 years old females in Jeddah, Saudi

Single gene disorders with craniofacial and oral manifestations.

Gene and environmental factors are instrumental in genesis of complex and wide range of disorders and syndromes. The newer gene sequencing and other advanced technologies have made our previous knowledge of genetic etiopathogenesis of various disorders more transparent. Single gene disorders refer to the disorders caused due to mutations in a single gene and a fair number of these manifest as craniofacial defects and anomalies. This review is an attempt to give a detailed insight into the varied single gene disorders and syndromes with an emphasis on dental implications.
