The Use of a DCIA Free Flap with Internal and External Oblique Abdominal Muscle in Compound Oral Cavity Defects: A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: The deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) free flap with internal abdominal oblique muscle (IAOM) is a well-known method of reconstruction used in cases of oral cavity neoplasms. Because the IAOM can be insufficient for extensive defects after removal of advanced carcinomas of the tongue, floor of the mouth, or gingiva, the additional preparation of a perforator-supported external abdominal oblique (EAOM) muscle flap can be useful. The aim of this study was to introduce the use of a DCIA flap with an IAOM and EAOM island in the reconstruction of oral cavity compound defect

[Epidemiology of malignant neoplasms of the respiratory and upper digestive tract in Austria].

Between 1981 and 1985 the incidence of malignant tumours of the buccal cavity and mesopharynx, the larynx and hypopharynx and of the oesophagus in males was higher in the mainly rural Burgenland and Lower Austria than in Vienna. In lung tumours a slight urban-rural gradient tended to level out (Tables 1-4). In women, the cancer incidence on all locations showed an urban-rural gradient, steeper in the buccal cavity and mesopharynx, in the larynx and hypopharynx and in the oesophagus than in lung tumours (Tables 1-4). Cancer incidence in the nasal and paranasal cavities, middle ear, epipharynx,

Incidence of invasive cancers following carcinoma in situ of the cervix.

Women with carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the cervix uteri, notified to the population-based Cancer Registry of the Swiss Canton of Vaud between 1974 and 1993, were actively followed up to 31 December 1993 for the occurrence of subsequent invasive neoplasms. Among 2190 incident cases of CIS, followed for a total of 22,225 person-years, 95 metachronous cancers were observed vs 77.9 expected, corresponding to a significant standardised incidence ratio (SIR) of 1.2. Ten cases of invasive cervical cancer were observed vs 3.0 expected (SIR = 3.4, P < 0.01), the excess being larger in the first 10 years

A case of Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome with possible myasthenia gravis.

Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a rare autoimmune disorder of neuromuscular transmission (NMJ) that shares many clinical features with myasthenia gravis (MG). We report a 73 year-old lady who presented 10 years previously with stiffness of both calves, dry mouth, fatigue, proximal weakness and areflexia in lower limbs. Neurophysiological studies were consistent with LEMS. Her work up for an underlying neoplasm was negative. She recently developed unilateral ptosis and diplopia which dramatically improved with pyridostigmine suggesting concomitant MG.

Focal myositis of the floor of mouth: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Focal myositis is an uncommon inflammatory myopathy of unknown cause affecting skeletal muscle. It may be mistaken on clinical evaluation for a malignant neoplasm. We describe two cases, both involving the mylohyoid muscle of the floor of the mouth. In each case excisional biopsy of a firm indurated mass revealed a focal lymphocytic and histiocytic infiltrate associated with degenerating and regenerating skeletal muscle fibers. No clinical or biochemical evidence of generalized muscle disease was seen at presentation or at 1-year and 7-year follow-up examination. The literature on focal myosit

The association of diet and other lifestyle factors with overactive bladder and stress incontinence: a longitudinal study in women.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrosarcomas are rare malignancies of the cartilage and myxoid chondrosarcoma is its variant which commonly occurs in soft tissue of extremities. Extraskeletal chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of bone or soft tissue origin and is characterized by the presence of spindle cells admixed with well differentiated cartilage or chondroid stroma. They are mostly radioresistant tumours and surgical resections with adequate margins is considered as the ideal treatment modality with adjuvant radiotherapy in high grade tumours and add on chemotherapy, in case of presence of poo

Correlation between clinical and pathological data and surgical margins in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity.

UNLABELLED: The importance of having tumor-free margins when resecting oral neoplasms has been known for decades. OBJECTIVE: To correlate clinical and pathology data to surgical margin status in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and floor of the mouth. METHOD: This historical cohort cross-sectional study included all patients submitted to squamous cell carcinoma resection for tumors of the oral tongue and floor of the mouth between 2007 and 2011 at the Head and Neck Surgery service of our institution. RESULTS: In the 117 cases included, 68.3% had tongue tumors. The male-to

Disseminated lobular capillary hemangioma (pyogenic granuloma). A clinicopathologic study of two cases.

The eruption of multiple lobular capillary hemangiomas (granulomata pyogenicum) is a previously documented but uncommon phenomenon. Reported cases have featured the recurrence of multiple satellite lesions after surgical removal of, or trauma to, a solitary capillary hemangioma. Sporadic cases of multifocal lesions arising de novo in both previously traumatized and uninjured skin have been described as well. We describe herein two unusual patients with disseminated lobular capillary hemangioma. One patient developed skin nodules in several sites, including the mouth, knee, thumb, and foot, aft

[Oral and perioral endogenous pigmented lesions].

Pigmented lesions are commonly found in the mouth. Such lesions represent a variety of clinical entities, ranging from physiologic changes to manifestations of systemic illnesses and malignant neoplasms. Two groups of pigmented lesions of the oral mucosa are recognized: 1) endogenous lesions, including racial pigmentations, melanotic macules, melanocytic nevi, malignant melanoma and 2) exogenous lesions (e.g., blood-related pigmentations, metallic pigmentations). The etiology, differential diagnosis, clinical and histopathological features and management of endogenous pigmented lesions is disc

In vivo confocal microscopy for the oral cavity: Current state of the field and future potential.

Confocal microscopy (CM) has been shown to correlate with oral mucosal histopathology in vivo. The purposes of this review are to summarize what we know so far about in vivo CM applications for oral mucosal pathologies, to highlight some current developments with CM devices relevant for oral applications, and to formulate where in vivo CM could hold further application for oral mucosal diagnosis and management. Ovid Medline® and/or Google® searches were performed using the terms 'microscopy, confocal', 'mouth neoplasms', 'mouth mucosa', 'leukoplakia, oral', 'oral lichen planus', 'gingiva', 'ch

Asymptomatic red lesion in anterior floor of mouth: diagnosis and management.

We have presented a case illustrating that an asymptomatic, red lesion in the oral mucosa should be considered a malignant neoplasm, until proved otherwise. A biopsy and microscopic examination of such lesions are necessary to establish a definitive diagnosis. An appropriate method of obtaining a tissue specimen from the floor of the mouth has been described, and the importance of taking a comprehensive clinical history has been reviewed. The value of transmitting this information to the pathologist, who examines the removed tissue, has been stressed. Small, asymptomatic erythroplastic lesions

A Pediatric Lateral Submental Mass: A Rare Presentation of Dermoid Cyst.

Dermoid cysts are benign cutaneous neoplasms that contain germ cells from the ectoderm and mesoderm. Approximately 70% are diagnosed during childhood before the age of 5. Although they can present throughout the body, the prevalence is 7% for those arising from the head and neck. These lesions present primarily as midline masses and are classified as sublingual, submental, or overlapping depending on their relationship with the muscles of the floor of mouth. A 10-year-old female presented with a 2-week history of right submental swelling. She denied pain, dysphagia, odynophagia, or respiratory

Oral Bilateral Collagenous Fibroma: A previously unreported case and literature review.

Collagenous fibroma, also known as desmoplastic fibroblastoma, is a rare benign slow growing tumor particularly uncommon in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and histopathological features of an oral collagenous fibroma as well as to compare this data with those reported in an English-literature review. The thirteenth case of collagenous fibroma in the oral cavity and the first to present clinically as a bilateral mass was described. A 48-years-old female patient was referred to a School of Dentistry, complaining about an asymptomatic swelling on the hard palat

[The use of exfoliative cytology in the detection of dysplastic changes in the laryngeal mucosa of postop cancer patients].

Second primary neoplasms are the cause of failure in treatment of head and neck carcinoma in 1-34% of cases. The majority of SPM are located within mouth, pharynx, lung or oesophagus. This study was designed to evaluate to effectiveness of exfoliative cytology in postoperative follow-up of patients with carcinoma of the larynx treated with surgery. The group consisted of 81 patients who had cytological evaluation between 1994 and 1996. Cytological smears were taken from six different places in mouth, pharynx and tracheostoma. If cytomorphotic changes, parakeratosis or inflammation was found, t

Parotid tail pleomorphic adenoma extending to the parapharyngeal space.

Parapharyngeal space tumors are rare, accounting for 0.5% of head and neck neoplasms. Most of them are benign and originate in the salivary glands, especially the pleomorphic adenoma. We presented a 47-year-old man with parotid tail pleomorphic adenoma extending to the parapharyngeal space. The patient applied to our clinic with the complaints of a painless mass on his neck and in his mouth for 3 months. After fine needle aspiration biopsy, the mass was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma. The patient was hospitalized and operated in our clinic. As we see in literature review, parapharyngeal spac

Rhabdomyoma of the tonsillar fossa.

Extracardiac rhabdomyomas are very uncommon tumors comprising approximately 2% of the neoplasms of striated muscle origin. The adult extracardiac rhabdomyoma is generally characterized as a slowly growing, usually solitary lesion, which is nearly always found in the head and neck area of elderly persons. The most common reported head and neck subsites are the floor of the mouth, tongue, palate, lips, and cheeks. We report an unusual presentation of rhabdomyoma that should be included in the differential diagnosis of tumors presenting as a large tonsillar fossa mass. In our review of the almost
