Paediatric emergency care at an academic referral hospital in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Improved emergency care of children with acute illness or injuries is needed for countries in Africa to continue to reduce childhood mortality rates. Quality improvement efforts will depend on robust baseline data, but little has been published on the breadth and severity of paediatric illness seen in Mozambique. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of routinely collected provider shift summary data from the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED) at Hospital Central de Maputo (HCM), the principal academic and referral hospital in the country. All children 0-14 years of age seen

Human toxoplasmosis in Mozambique: gaps in knowledge and research opportunities.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic zoonotic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii that afflicts humans worldwide and wild and domestic warm-blooded animals. In immunocompetent individuals, the acute phase of infection presents transient low or mild symptoms that remain unnoticed. In immunocompromised patients, T. gondii is a life-threatening opportunistic infection, which can result from the reactivation of latent infection or primary infection. Moreover, congenital toxoplasmosis, which results from the transplacental passage of tachyzoites into the fetus during a pregnant primary infection, can lead

Bisexual and Bidirectional: Assessing the Potential for HIV Bridging in Mozambique.

African men who have sex with men (MSM) frequently, and often concurrently, have female partners, raising concerns about HIV sexual bridging. We explored potential HIV transmission in Mozambique from and to female partners of MSM focusing on preferred anal sex role and circumcision status. Data collected in a respondent-driven sampling study of MSM in 2011 in Maputo and Beira. Men who had oral or anal sex with other men 12 months prior completed a questionnaire and consented for HIV testing. Statistical analysis explored demographic/risk characteristics and associations among circumcision stat

Radiological findings in young children investigated for tuberculosis in Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: Chest radiography remains a critical tool for diagnosing intrathoracic tuberculosis (TB) in young children who are unable to expectorate. We describe the radiological findings in children under 3 years of age investigated for TB in the district of Manhiça, southern Mozambique, an area with a high prevalence of TB and HIV. METHODS: Digital antero-posterior and lateral projections were performed and reviewed by two independent readers, using a standardized template. Readers included a local pediatrician and a pediatric radiologist blinded to all clinical information. International

Drug utilisation research and medicine access in Mozambique: An overview.

Access to medicine is fundamental to the provision of equitable health systems. However, availability of affordable quality-assured medicines continues to be poor, especially in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Targeted efforts associated with transparency and accountability around medicine utilisation are required in LMICs to address this problem. With the increased global focus on improved access to medicines, there is a heightened imperative to understand the current landscape of medicine prescribing in these territories. In Sub-Saharan Africa, drug utilisation research is generall

Women's mental health in Mozambique: is maternity a protective factor?

BACKGROUD: Globally, women have been shown to have high rates of common mental disorders (CMDs). In low and middle-income countries (LMICs), women face significant challenges related to maternity. However, no study has compared mental health problems among pregnant/post-partum women, childless women of childbearing age, and women with children in a low-income country. We sought to compare the frequency of CMD and suicide risk in a sample of women presenting or accompanying patients in primary care in two Mozambican semi-urban settings. METHODS: We administered the MINI International Neuropsyc

Incidence of Endemic Burkitt Lymphoma in Three Regions of Mozambique.

Data on the burden and incidence of endemic Burkitt lymphoma (eBL) across Mozambique are scarce. We retrospectively retrieved information on eBL cases from reports of the three main hospitals of Mozambique: Maputo Central Hospital (MCH), Beira Central Hospital (BCH), and Nampula Central Hospital (NCH) between 2004 and 2014. For 2015, we prospectively collected information of new eBL cases attending these hospitals. A total of 512 eBL cases were reported between 2004 and 2015: 153 eBL cases were reported in MCH, 195 in BCH, and 164 in NCH. Mean age of cases was 6.9 years (standard deviation = 2

The performance of the expanded programme on immunization in a rural area of Mozambique.

Vaccines are an effective public health measure. Vaccination coverage has improved in Africa in the last decades but has still not reached WHO/UNICEF target of at least 90% first-dose coverage for vaccines in the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) implemented in Mozambique in 1979. There are concerns about reliability of vaccination coverage official data from low-income countries, and inequities in vaccine administration. We randomly sampled 266 under-five years children from Taninga, a poor rural area in Southern Mozambique under a Demographic surveillance system and collected data dir

Epidemic waves of cholera in the last two decades in Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: Africa is increasingly affected by cholera. In Mozambique, cholera appeared in the early 1970s when the seventh pandemic entered Africa from the Indian subcontinent. In the following decades, several epidemics were registered in the country, the 1997-1999 epidemic being the most extended. Since then, Mozambique has been considered an endemic area for cholera, characterized by yearly outbreaks occurring with a seasonal pattern. At least three pandemic variants are thought to have originated in the Indian subcontinent and spread worldwide at different times. To understand the epide

Factors associated with early sexual debut among adolescents and youth in Mozambique: A geo-additive survival analysis of the Mozambique 2021 AIDS indicator survey.

Engaging in sexual activity before the age of 15, known as early sexual debut, is a significant public health concern due to its association with increased risks of sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and reduced educational achievements. This research investigates the factors influencing early sexual initiation among adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 years in Mozambique, utilizing data of 5,283 individuals from the 2021 Mozambique AIDS indicator survey. Geoadditive models for censored time-to-event outcomes were employed to explore regional disparities and key determina
